Xbox 360 YouTube app gets a design overhaul in latest update

The look and feel of the app has changed quite a bit, but probably the most notable change is that new YouTube app bring a more full-featured guide that pops out from the left side of the screen. Within the guide, users can access recent updates from their subscriptions and recommendations on what to watch, along with the search and history functions.

Additionally, the new YouTube app adds a search bar to the top of the page, and search results will now include channels in addition to relavant videos. Speaking of channels, it looks like channel pages have gotten a bit of a refresh as well, providing a list of playlists and videos put together by the channel owners.

If you'd like to snag the revamped YouTube app for your Xbox 360, you should be able to snag it from the Xbox app store now.

  • still annoying that the xbox one can have a native youtube player, but windows phone cannot
  • This^^ stupid Google. But there are a lot of 360's and XboxOnes out there, that's probably why.
  • Also a different market. Windows Phone is a competitor. Xbox is basically a TV add on that Google doesn't directly compete with.
  • Well, technically they do now!
  • actually, consoles have their own OS's and the latest gen have more in comon with PCs than previous generations. You cannot just call it a "TV Addon", they are full bodied PCs designed for 1 thing only.   And... Universal apps :) so when Windows 10 lands.... there should be no excuse :)
  • That's a good point.... But, just because W10 has universal apps doesn't automatically make every app universal.... Nevertheless, I understand your point completely... I guess all Google would have to do us a universal compile❓ ..... IDK.. Either way you're right... They have very little excuse left... But, market share is a good one.
  • You've got a point there, but it's still a pretty limited use case in a market where it hurts them more to prevent people from watching YouTube on their xboxes than it does to try and hurt Microsoft.
  • They do though. Google TV, Chromecast...
  • Consumers aren't cross shopping an XBOX One with a Nexus Player (Google TV is dead) or Chomecast.
  • This is correct ^^
  • .
  • Just proves that it's about market share, not purely about hatred...
    Business is business.
  • Microsoft should block Chrome on Windows and Youtube on XBox.
  • Native or official? To be honest, mytube is better than any Youtube app I have found on any other platform. It is an app of envy amongst my friends.
  • Agreed
  • Really?I couldn't find a better YouTube app.
  • Agree. Who wants a native YouTube app with no ability to download videos and a bunch of advertisements?
  • Are you using the beta version? If so you may know some really great additions recently added. Dev asked for us to keep it secret lol.
  • Out of curiousity, does anyone know if the xbox app has ads?
  • Yeap.
  • Too many in my opinion, ads randomly playing throughout videos.
  • From Google?? Whaaaaaat!
  • ⬆⬆⬆⬆⬆
  • It's been there..
  • Question, is this developed by Google?
  • No, it's not developed by Google. This is from Microsoft, and it's using the same API that MS was complaining about being "required to use" to build the Windows Phone app.
  • So they can make a new Windows Phone app.....
  • Really? And can you give proof?
  • Proof of what exactly? The app is made by Microsoft, and it's using YouTube's public API. Do a freaking search and educate yourself.
  • Yeah...according to YouTube's blog Google developed it not MS, please show us where MS created it.
  • Proof that the Youtube app is made by Microsoft with Youtube's public API and not by Google. Considering it's coming from Youtube's Google+ page, that tends to make me think that it's made by Google.   That is, of course, unless you have some proof that it is made by Microsoft such as a link from a reputable site that confirms it.
  • Do you really think Google made the app? http://www.slashgear.com/xbox-one-to-include-youtube-app-despite-windows...
  • Your link talks about the Xbox One. This article is referring to the Xbox 360. I'll ask again: what proof, in the form of a link to a repubtable news site, do you have that says that the Xbox 360 version of Youtube (which debut in 2011; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xbox_360 ) is made by Microsoft and not Google?
  • I could tell you more apps that you believe were made by certain companies, but we're actually made by Microsoft. It's amazing the amount of work MS does to provide apps and services to their platforms.
  • You could tell me, but what reason would I have to believe you? You've seemed to have "freaking reasearched and educated yourself", so I'm curious to know where it is that you've researched this.
  • I don't care if you believe me, and I wish I could say that politely. It's hard to convey in written word.
  • Funny the slashgear article is not updated to remove the parts about Google being "unmoved" or potentially yanking the app, since the Xbox One app was announced on Youtube's official blog: http://youtube-global.blogspot.com/2013/11/youtube-is-on-xbox-one.html From all accounts, the Xbox One app is basically Youtube for TVs (this article hints at the Youtube team having a hand in the app's development as well): http://youtube-global.blogspot.com/2014/08/coming-soon-easier-way-to-use-youtube.html So it seems that the Xbox and the Youtube teams are at least working together on the apps, and MS isn't going at it alone. Which, of course, is funny considering Google's coldness towards Windows 8 and Windows Phone.
  • It's kind of hard finding proof of something in an article, because what I'm telling you didn't come from an article.
  • .
  • please do not post anything from wikipedia, that's worst than thinking the earth is flat.
  • Snappy... Lol.
  • MarkusDindu, I think that it's you that need to do some research and educate yourself, because you can't prove anything and therefore it's complete bs. Period!
  • Google did in fact develop the app, http://youtube-global.blogspot.com/2013/11/youtube-is-on-xbox-one.html
  • I highly doubt that as I have had this 'design overhaul' on my PS3 for many months now.
  • Same one that's on most smart tv's and game consoles I believe.
  • Looks 100% like the YouTube app on WebOS powered LG SmartTV's.
  • Hamburger menu!
  • ^ SMH
  • This thing looks like it is having an hamburger menu but there isn't an icon.
  • And whem will google pull out the app from xbox store ?
  • Never, they will lose a lot of customers.
  • Are Xbox 360 users significantly more than WP users? Any rough figures?
  • When you figure the main people in that market are Sony and Nintendo, you'd say at LEAST 33.3% market share...most likely more because many own more-than-one gaming console. :) but I also digress...these are completely different markets, so an analysis between the two would be unfair.
  • Is this app made by Google ?
  • No, it's not. It's made by Microsoft.
  • bs
  • It's the exact same as the on on Playstation, maybe MS did that one too. Lol.
  • Markus...you do not know what you're talking about!!
  • Okay
  • This^^
  • Now they're all the same on each console.
  • You say other consoles have the same app❓❓
  • UI it's pretty the same for all TVs, PS3 and 4 and Xbox.
  • Sounds like it IS developed by Google.
  • Yeap. MS probably helped, but seems to be done by Google.
  • My Smart TV and Xbox One have the exact same layout.. Now 360 is following..
  • Hopefully not. I like how my 360 can sort videos based on user preferences like earliest or oldest. Unless there is a way to do that on the XB1 and I just missed it????
  • Tipped this several hours ago :P
  • Looks like the app on PS4. At least they updated the app, thankfully we have 3rd party apps to pick up the slack here.
  • i thought something was wrong when the "youtube" app wouldn't load...and i had to redownload it. i'm not a fan of this redesign.  the main page is now littered with "recommended" channels i couldn't care less about that are mixed in with my subscriptions.  every other channel is a "recommended for you" channel, that has worse suggestions than netflix.  The sidebar menu in this screen shot isn't working just yet either, but when it is, i hope there is some option to turn off suggestions.
  • The sidebar menu works I just used it. You just have to go left
  • The sidebar menu works I just used it. You just have to go left
  • Can we still sort videos based on preferences like earliest or oldest?
  • Wallet, YouTube, maps.... Still waiting for their native apps on WP
  • Wallet?
  • yeah, google wallet. the ones that so gracefully shut down softcard
  • Google Wallet probably will be an Android feature. iOS has it?
  • Yeah, iOS has it.
  • Where are you getting your info? I can't find one source that says Microsoft developed the YouTube app. Every place I see says Google
  • This would be something pretty stupid for me to make up and argue about, and I'm fine with nobody believing me. There are some things maybe I will talk about later, but right now I don't think its the right thing to do. That may change.
  • It is pretty stupid, you're right.
So stop pushing a bad position. Just accept you got it wrong, and move on...
  • lol so MS developed all Youtube app out there? Or they just use the same UI so none whould notice isn't from Google?
  • It's supposed to look like it was built by the YouTube team, that's the point.
  • Dont be stupid ! Xbox 360 has a youtube app because of the millions of users it has unlike windows phone ... But with windows 10 for xbox ome i guess google will be forced either to pull out their app wich i doubt they will ... Or write an app that can work also on phones yay smart move microsoft
  • Windows Phone has millions of users
  • Windows Phone has probably more users than Xbox, and I'm an Xbox die hard fan.
  • I'm pretty sure there are more Xbox users out there than Windows Phone users.
  • You know that they doesn't HAVE to build an Universal App for Xbox One just because of Windows10, right? They can keep this same app even with Win10 and continue to ignoring Windows Phone.
  • Isn't there 40 million Windows phone users out there? How many Xbox 360s?
  • 83 million Xbox 360 have been sold
  • Maybe a universal app coming soon :p
  • I'm hoping so :) benefits of going all in on Windows10. It's no longer about the device type but instead the OS itself.
  • Downgraded to a webapp :(
  • It'd be nice if the Netflix app got an update too. In any case I'd you can't use the keyboard to type in it, it is useless
  • This is pretty much what the Xbox One YouTube app looks like
  • That one was built by Microsoft also.
  • A-holes still wont bring a YT app to WP.
  • Do we really need it?! I for one prefer the Youtube apps we have on this platform. Being able to cache videos is a great feature...and one which you cannot do on the official apps on the other platforms!
  • It's a matter of principle. A new user will look for YouTube in the store and find a web wrapper. They won't look for Tubecast
  • Not even a web wrapper. That MS YT app is a shortcut app to YT in the browser.
  • I really hope that this app will appear on other devices during windows 10
  • Does the app still crash the console
  • ??? I use 360 YouTube daily and it never crashes.
  • It seems like whenever I used it my 360 was over the hill
  • You guys do realize once windows 10 unifies everything that this app could quite effortlessly become compatible with any other windows device tight?
  • In theory but does it look good on a tv vs. Monitor(different signaling between the 2)
  • Nice to see that Xbox 360 hasn't been forgotten. Still a very large and active user base.
I keep thinking I'll update one day but I have so many games I own and have yet to play.
  • Right on.  The Xbox One and PS4 just arent getting the rave reviews and support you would have thought a year and a half in. I mean the Xbox 360 is still supported, is still getting updates, infact still getting dashboard updates as I am in the preview program. They just added support for up to 4TB of storage use (If your in the program) and they no longer require a resvered amount of space.  I too have a ton of games that I still have to play and the games with gold keeps on giving games that I sometimes dont have. Infact one can argue the games with gold for Xbox 360 is way better than for Xbox one. So why spend over 400-500 dollars upgrading now. Wait until this Winter when the price will drop.
  • It looks like the same YouTube app on my Roku 3.
  • Awesome
  • Can you type properly yet? Lol
  • I hate to say it cause I dispise Google but the Xbox One's Youtube app is one of my most used apps.  It's pretty awesome once you have found some good content providers; for example Windows Central, TWiTWindowsWeekly, and MobileTechReview.
  • Source: Youtube (Google+)
  • My Kinnect won't work with it now. :/
  • Looks like the ps3 version...
  • Does anyone know if there is a way to switch back to the old way YouTube looked?
  • I would also like to know cuz this update sucks balls
  • I WISH
  • Hopefully this app goes Universal after Windows 10 is on Xbox.
  • Very odd and somewhat clumsy / jerky UI organization and behavior. Reminds me of the hamburger menu but no icon, just a hidden left arrow click to bring up the choice menu / make the choices display. Geez I hope Microsoft doesn't copy these UI actions and features.
  • Why WP cannot have an official and native Youtube app???? It's been years we've been waiting to have a official Youtube APP
  • Looks just like the Wii U version now.
  • Maybe this could become a universal app?...
  • Omg i hate it soooo much it was WAY better before omgg
  • I liked it bettter before
  • the update is gross and you can delete it but you can't use it after deleting said update since it tells you to update before using it so it's pretty fucking stupid
  • Did they take out the option to remove videos from your watch later list?
  • Not sure about others' experiences, but I'm no fan of this update. The previous app was, admittedly, a little vanilla; but it was just what the 360 needed. The UI was smooth and looked organic, the controller map felt natural without being complicated, the videos were easy to find, and the overall layout made sense. The new app looks more like a wrapper for a mobile site - the menus look warped and (poorly) resized, being made for some other purpose and ported over to the 360, speculatively speaking. The controller map doesn't seem to have rhyme or reason to it. The rewind/forward-by-multiples feature previously mapped to the triggers has been taken away. There's no apparent order associated with how videos show up on the home screen. When you navigate to your "Subcriptions" page, you're not actually shown Subcriptions! You're, instead, shown randomly-ordered videos from your subscriptions. Thinking about doing a full review... The worst part is that this update (downdate?) was mandatory: forced upon users like broccoli stumps on a state-funded public school lunch tray. The former app was not perfect - but nothing is perfect. Not sure about you, but it's a big flop for me.
  • i loved the old one and now i cant even use it, they took it away like it was obsolete but it was not even close, well it was way better then the new one.what am trying to say is you right.
  • Well I will say this new app sucks. Some of the stuff mentioned already existed in the old version. Like search results including channels as well, and the ability to check out those channels playlists and such was already there. Yes there are some new things, but the overall feel sucks. No longer can you forward the videos at leisure as your now forced with 10 second intervals. Also the old design was more "windows" based, meaning all the videos showed up in boxes which was a more manageable look.   Another odd thing was it said this update came out on March 17th, however it never forced me to update. Infact the only reason I had to update was because on April 13th I tried to watch some videos and each one said "Cannot play video in this version of YouTube" or something along those lines.  Also the what to watch area isn't the same, doesn't have as many videos in it. And as far as subscriptions go. Instead of the top row of videos being the most recent, you have to scroll down to get to that section. I wish YOU COULD HAVE THE OPTION to use the version you want for a period of time. I mean its not like the XBOX 360 is going to be around much longer anyways. Infact I specifically use my Xbox 360 for media apps, as I don't have time to play games anymore. I hated the new Netflix Update when it came out and I hate this new YouTube one as well.
  • i know right this new youtube sucks,a golf ball throw graden hoes. i have over 200hrs on the old one and i know for a fact the old one was easier to navgate, plus i think you cant even use the old one now,its gone from the app store.and the ads man i love them so much.such a great feature.
  • the old youtube is gone from the app store can you plz bring it back it 1000x better then this new p.o.s thanks!
