Windows Phone Central App Roundup: Weather Apps

There is little debate on whether or not we have an ample selection of weather related apps in the Windows Phone Store. Some will argue we have too many Windows Phone weather apps, while others like the variety and options available. Regardless of your position, when the weather starts to turn south some of these apps can help you keep track of severe weather situations in your area.

As Spring quickly approaches so does the Spring severe weather season. Many parts of the U.S. will see weather events ranging from dangerous thunderstorms to deadly tornadoes. Some of us will also be facing Hurricane Season in a few months, which will present more severe weather potential. For this week’s Windows Phone Central roundup, we focus on Windows Phone weather apps that do more than just give you the current temperature and weekly forecast. We will highlight four of the top rated weather apps that have a little more meat on the bone when it comes to delivering weather information to your Windows Phone.

Amazing Weather HD is one of our favorite Windows Phone weather apps and the Windows Phone 8 version just got updated.

The update mainly fine tunes Amazing Weather HD by providing better support for Meteoalarm.eu, adding new Simplified Chinese and Hungarian languages, fixes lock screen updates that weren't matching the weather and added optional usage stats.

Improved support for Meteoalarm.eu will give our European readers more reliable severe weather alerts. The reporting of usage stats is optional and can be turned off in Amazing Weather HD's settings.

Amazing Weather HD is one of our favorite weather apps for Windows Phone. The app is available for both Windows Phone 7.x and 8 devices and was updated to version 4.2.2.2 earlier today to add a few new features and fix a few bugs.

The most notable fix corrects the bug that caused lockscreen updates to not match the weather information. You also have Simplified Chines and Hungarian languages added and a optional usage data setting.

Windows Phone Central App Roundup: Weather Apps

Our Windows Phones are fantastic devices to keep us up to date on things while on the go. From email to appointments to our Twitter activity we've got apps to help us stay in tune with what's going on in our lives.

Weather apps are rather abundant over in the Windows Phone Store and a great way to stay up on what Mother Nature has in store for us. In this week's roundup, we take a look at four such Windows Phone weather apps; two of the more popular weather apps this week along with two that may have snuck under everyone's radar.

Amazing Weather HD is one of those lockscreen apps that are a must-download for many Windows Phone owners. As the name suggests, you're looking at high-definition images, not only on the lockscreen integration, but also throughout the app. It truly is a gorgeous UI. The app has recently received an update that introduces a few new features and changes.

Amazing Weather HD is simply an amazing Windows Phone weather app. Along with a nice level of weather coverage (forecasts, radar, satellite, etc.), the app also has support that pulls stunning HD weather images to your Windows Phone lockscreen.

Amazing Weather HD has been updated to version 4.2. We suspect a little fine tuning was done under the hood (the app seems to have a bit more zip to it), the most notable change with the update is with the lockscreen support.

Not only are there new HD images to rotate to your lockscreen but now you can use your own images as lockscreen wallpapers with the app's weather overlays.

The Windows Phone "Next App Star" contest is winding down with voting for the final four apps ending tonight at 11:59pm PST. After which voting for the championship round will take place from April 6th to 8th.

While the WPCentral app made it to the elite eight, we fell short to ProShot, who is now facing (and leading) Amazing Weather HD. On the other side of the semi-finals you will find Wikipedia leading Voice Translator.

If there is one thing Windows Phone users like it’s weather apps. And it’s even better, when they are sale.

Such is the case with Amazing Weather HD, which normally goes for $1.99 (though it was at $1.49 recently) but for at least the next week it can be had for a more reasonable $0.99. The sale only applies to US, UK, France, Spain, Finland and Germany marketplaces.

In less than 24 hours a winter storm is expected to hit the Northeast United States. Big deal right? Nope, most meteorologists are already calling this one for the record books. Mostly because it is two wild storm systems that are going to combine into one apocalyptic blizzard. While Windows Phone Central can’t stop the impending snow, closed roads, and a weekend spent indoors – we certainly can help prepare you with some ‘winter storm’ apps.

One of our favorite weather apps around here, Amazing Weather, just got bumped with some Windows Phone 8 support to version 4.0. Now appropriately titled Amazing Weather HD, the app weighs in at an impressive 80MB. Reason? It’s all of those fancy high-resolution animations.

Amazing Weather HD features what can be best described as subtle animated GIFs (though technically they are HD videos) in the background of the weathercast. For instance today we have a pile of leaves, some of which are twitching slightly in the wind. On other days you will have rain falling or light snow blowing—it’s some very pretty stuff. But if photo-realism isn’t your thing, the developer has also embraced two Metro UI themes in dark and light choices. That style is flat with just the “just the facts, ma’am” approach Windows Phone users are used to...
