The developer of Baconit, a popular Reddit app for Windows Phone, has opened up an early access program. What this program does for consumers is it allows those who wish to help out test new functionality and enjoy features before the stable app is updated. If you're an avid beta tester, this is certainly the option for you. Read past the break to see how you can get involved.

When you need your fix of cats, WTF, and bacon you head to Reddit. We don’t have an official Reddit app on Windows Phone, but we’ve got some really good third party apps. Baconit is the reigning champ when it comes to getting Reddit on your Windows Phone. Newcomer Baconography doesn’t exactly look to challenge it, instead offering a slightly different take on the Reddit experience. Let’s check it out.

Update: Turns out this is an in-app joke by Baconit developer Quinn Damerell. So if you see this in the next 24 hours, you can stop sweating.

We all should know by now that Windows Phone 8 is based off of the NT kernel and overlaps significantly with Windows 8, a merger that will only get closer with future releases for both platforms i.e. Blue. So with that knowledge it should be of little surprise that things can go wrong, or some oddities pop up (if we had a time for every “tip” we had on the C:/ root installation thing happening, we’d be rich).

Within the next week or so users of the popular Reddit client Baconit should be getting an update that will bring some added functionality for Windows Phone 8 users.

We’ve been using Baconit version 2.5 or the last few days and really enjoy the performance (we were sold on the design with version 1.0) and the new features. Baconit (and its PC browser client BaconSync) is probably your best choice if you’re a casual or hardcore Reddit user who also uses Windows Phone.

Head past the break for the complete change log or just watch our video to get the highlights of those new features in action!

BaconSync is a really neat feature coming to the Windows Phone app Baconit . The feature is still in beta form and should be released to the masses shortly.  For those not familiar with Baconit, it is a Reddit.com app for your phone which we have been impressed with and BaconSync looks to make it even more impressive.

BaconSync is a in-browser extension for Baconit that synchronizes read links across multiple phones and browser. It is currently only compatible with Chrome browsers. The extension not only lets you review what you've read from your Windows Phone on your PC but you can send web pages from your PC to your Windows Phone. In these situations you'll receive a toast notification on your Windows Phone that will send you straight to the web page.

BaconSync is an handy extension that will extend the capabilities of Baconit rather nicely. The BaconSync extension should be ready shortly and in the meantime, if you haven't tried Baconit, you can find the free version here at the Windows Phone Marketplace.  There is also a donation version that you can find here for $1.99 to help support the developers efforts.

For those of you who use Reddit.com, the social news aggregation site, you may have heard us pimping the Windows Phone client Baconit in the past. It's one of a few clients available for Windows Phone and while the others are certainly solid we've been fond of this one partly due to the frequency of updates.

A mere four months after its premier we're getting v2.0 with new options, aspects of it re-written for optimization and other new tweaks. Here are the main changes:

  • Added Recent tiles
  • Added .gif support
  • Made subreddit list scroll larger
  • Viewed stories now have a different title color to indicate what has already been seen.
  • Endless scrolling work 100% of the time
  • Made first comment bar color much brighter than the others
  • Pressing up vote or down vote after it is already now neutralizes the vote
  • Main user account now also show liked, disliked, and hidden
  • Fixed returning to the wrong Image
  • New and better live tiles features
  • Much of the app's code was rewritten
  • Bug Fixes
  • Sooooo much more :)
  • There's actually more stuff which you can find here in the full change log.

Baconit is of course still free with no ads making it a rare gem on the Windows Phone Marketplace. There's also a "donation" version which has the same feature set but you get the nice fuzzy feeling of making the dev happy (plus you got 2.0 nearly a week early), so if you enjoy Baconit consider that version.

Oh and if you're a Reddit fan, you may notice on the main site for WPCentral, we now have Reddit submit buttons with up/down arrows. So go nuts, submit our stories and give us some 'up boats'.

Pick up Baconit v2.0 for free here in the Marketplace or grab the donation version here instead for some karma.

We here at WPC love us some Reddit (as if you couldn't tell) and we're also big fans of Baconit, the metro-style Reddit app.  The oft-updated app has just been upvoted to version 1.8, which packs a whole lot of additions.  Among the major ones is Image Mode for subreddits, which allows full screen viewing, endless image scrolling, comprehensive viewing options (pinch to zoom, drag to pan, double tap to reset) and the ability to save images to your phone.

Other significant changes include:

  • Added landscape support for subreddit, web page, and comment viewers, as well as submit a link
  • Added story domain in to story list
  • Added orientation lock
  • New comments are tracked on stories that have been viewed
  • Fixed long self-text / comment cut off problem
  • Improved web page viewer
  • Improved up vote and down vote hit boxes

There are other changes and fixes as well, which can be viewed in their entirety here.  And as you can see in the change log, version 1.9 is already in the works.

You can download the free version, or reward the developer for a great app with a $1.99 donation.

We're pretty sure that Baconit is the best Reddit.com app on the Windows Phone Marketplace today. Developed by Quinn Damerell, the app is constantly in development with beta tests and updates coming nearly every two weeks. In fact, since its release in late December the app has been updated three times, including today's release which brings it to version 1.6:

  • Better images on live tiles
  • Edit / delete posts and comments
  • Speed increases of up to 2-3x
  • Tons of performance / UI tweaks

There's a lot more too which you can read here (opens Word Web app). The app is of course free and ad-free, which is remarkable for such a gorgeous and highly functional app. So if you want to show Damerell some thanks, you can grab the "donation version" for $1.99 here in the Marketplace. You don't get any new features (yet) but you do get the satisfaction of helping a dev out and perhaps giving him a little encouragement.

We think it's a great investment and anxiously await further updates to Baconit. Pick up Baconit v1.6 here in the Marketplace or grab the donation version here.

The other week we mentioned the new app Baconit from Quinn Damerell as being one of the first Mango-enabled Reddit.com apps for Windows Phone. Not only that, it's quite slick with a Metro UI and a ton of options for an initial-release.

One snafu at the time though was the app was only available in the US. This however wasn't intentional on the dev's part but was instead a hiccup in the Marketplace which has now been rectified. So if you were looking to try it out, you'll want to head back to the Marketplace to give it another go. Did we mention the app was completely free with no-ads and a Live Tile? Pretty great stuff if you're a Redditor like ourselves.

Version 1.4 should be entering beta real soon as well. That version will fix a couple of issues in v1.3 as well as bring new features. Grab the current release here in the Marketplace or click-n-zoom the QR code below to get your Reddit-on.

Reddit users, your Baconit is here

We've mentioned in the past that Reddit (site link) is our favorite learning tool time waster and we've always enjoyed having a mobile-Reddit option. The web site is a massive collection of user-submitted stories, pictures and news where "Redditors" can up-vote or down-vote what they like. Going deeper, there are s sub-reddits for specific topics. It's a hilarious, often witty community where we often do learn a few things (as well as being entertained--hello F7U12)

Unfortunately, some of the past apps have not gone "Mango", which is a shame as fast-app switching, Live Tiles, notifications, etc. all seem very useful things for such a website. Now Quinn Damerell has made a dedicated, Mango app called 'Baconit' (the title itself is a bit of an inside joke). In development for sometime, Damerell has made quite the killer Reddit app in our opinion. No doubt he learned a thing or two interning at Microsoft last year (we hear he's also returning to join the Windows Phone team--big congrats!).

We've been running the beta for awhile now and the full version just went live in the Marketplace. The app is free, which is amazing for such quality and features everything you would want in a mobile Reddit app:

  • Full Mango Support
  • Message Inbox with background updates
  • Unread Message / Karma Live Tile
  • Pinning of SubReddits and stories [Bug: fix coming in v1.4]
  • Endlesss SubReddit browsing
  • Fast App Switching / Multitasking
  • Local caching of all data
  • Easy voting for stories and comments
  • Logical browsing and reading of comments
  • Commenting support for stories and other comments
  • Account control and details

Like we said, it's free so if you're a Reddit user there's not reason not to use it--it's simply gorgeous and fluid, the way app should be. Pick it up here in the Marketplace and enjoy. [Edit: App appears to be US-only at this point. We've contaced the developer to inquire about future Marketplace expansion]
