CNN commentators ignore free Surface Pro 3 tablets, use iPads instead

Microsoft's product placement for the Surface Pro 3 on CNN has taken a surprising turn for the worse. The company managed to score a deal with the broadcaster to have its laptop killers present on CNN's news show, but commentators appeared to be more interested in iPads concealed behind said Microsoft hardware.

There's no question that having the Surface Pro 3 on-stage makes the show look more professional, but we're sure this isn't what Microsoft had planned for its product placement.

This also isn't the first time Microsoft has had to deal with Surface Pro product placements going wrong. It was only last month when we covered the company looking to "coach" NFL TV announcers to correctly identify its own tablets, instead of referring to them as "iPad-like tools."

  • Surface more powerful than iPad
  • Morons don't need power.
  • Exactly
  • +920
  • I guarantee that moron makes more money than most of us here, yet, on set, with cameras everywhere, he couldn't abide by the product placement guidelines (you know there had to be some) and pulled out his iPad where it could be seen. SMH... iCattle.
  • In his defense, I too probably wouldn't use any computing device just thrown in front of my face. It takes time and effort to set it up. Bro's iPad was likely already set up while the Surface Pro just dumped there. Just guessing.
  • I very much doubt it was just dumped there. In corporate situations like this it would have been fully setup and ready to go. This presenter is just a dick.. It's like Alicia Keys being a celebrity link with Blackberry then sending a tweet from her iPhone.. Just utter stupidity.
  • If you gave me the nicest mac workstation at work, I would pull out my Surface tablet because its what's familiar to me. I had a guy ask me to help him find why the hard drive on his mac was getting full this week. I'm an IT professional that has worked with computers - even some experience editing video on macs, but for the life of me, I couldnt find what was taking up over 100GB of space on his drive. I just dont work with macs enough to know my way around. Switching platforms is a major ordeal for most people - it takes time.
  • They've been trained, or were supposed to be anyway.
  • "Training" doesnt erase years of familiarty with a device. They may have been checking their personal email or something that wasnt loaded on the Surface. I had to laugh though. Here's this sleek modern Surface on the desk and this guy has an iPad in a fat bulking case trying to type on screen all kludgy. This is a great illustration of what MS is up against. Its not enough to make something that's better.
  • they were trained just like the workers at AT&T who still don't know s**t about windows phones. Trust me they weren't trained.
  • You are probably right.
  • Those morons have a job description and they cannot follow it. That's quite moronoid to me.
  • Morons need to go!
  • CNN is filled with idiot old people lol
  • The young ones are equally dumb, maybe worse.
  • Seconded.
  • Thirded
  • Good to see people aren't afraid to be referring to themselves when state it
  • Couldn't agree more.
  • Real mature. Along with those who upvote this kind of words. What a lovely bunch.

  • Yes
  • Those morons (CNN) are also paid off by apple to promote anything they release or have.  NOT totally breaking news they would have apple everywhere.
  • So? What use is power if the apps you like to use aren't there. It doesn't help that Microsoft keep changing their user interface drastically. Apple instead just refines it. Windows 10 will change it all over again.
  • No, Windows 10 refines it.
  • Windows 8.1 addressed most UX complaints. My 67 years old mother uses Windows 8.1, coming from XP!
  • As an IT profesional I find that seniors (65+) adapt to Windows 8.1 much easier than folks coming from XP or 7.
  • My 81 year old mother can use Windows 8.1 and computers have always terrified her before now. That said, those guys have no excuse for doing what they did. Reprimands and fines for breach of contract are in order.
  • So far I hate w10 tech preview. The gesture controls that made it user friendly are gone and the replacement actions are too cramped for use on my Surface Pro.
  • You know the current Windows 10 preview doesn't have any of the touch enhancements yet, right? Current preview build has desktop (read also mouse\keyboard) stuff, and not even all of it yet. Stuff is still in flight.
  • They havent even begun to address the touch side in Windows 10.
  • Oh, here we go again, another person taking the technical preview for the final product..
  • It's Tech Preview! If you weren't ready to deal with bugs and sacrifice some functions why did you install it??? Do you even recall installing it? Did you even bother to do research? Do even know what tech preview means?
  • What gesture controls? My lynx tablet runs win10 just fine
  • Agree.  Windows 10 will be more like a "refined Windows 7" with Windows 8 app capability thrown in.  I know this because I am currently using the Windows 10 Technical Preview.  Believe me, if you haven't seen Windows 10 in action, go search for some videos of Windows 10 in action on Bing Search!  You will be impressed!  What Microsoft is doing with Windows 10 is nothing short of miraculous!  Having one operating system that will work on ALL devices is pure Genius!  All the "nay-sayers" can say what they want at this point, but believe me when I say, they will be proven WRONG!  And, when Windows 10 is released for all devices, app developers will be flocking to Windows platform to develop apps because they know that they will get a much larger market share for their app on Windows Platform because one app will be able to run on ANY device that has Windows 10 (Desktops, laptops, hybrids, tablets, phablets, phones, Xbox, etc.).
  • He's emailing, texting, surfing the web, or looking at pictures. You're a regurgitator (my word). No your roll and shut your mouth.
  • Or, you could Know your Role.  Either way :)
  • Oops, LOL...^^^role...LOL...
  • ^^^know
  • Nope. Win10 will be the third stage of the evolution started with Win8. Look at the tech preview.
  • Fool.  iOS 7 > 8 changed more than windows 8 > 10 will.
  • ...what did iOS 8 change? Interacting with OSX?
  • How do you know if Windows 10 is not completed yet?
  • You mean IOS 6>7, no?
  • What are you talking about? They have ONE tablet interface and Windows 10 doesn't change that interface.. Windows 8 & 10 are far more intuitive then Apples stale interface that has barely changed since release.
  • You are talking about Technical Preview, not Windows 10, Win10 is not a product yet.
  • hey @gilesjuk, ever hear of the internet... apps are mostly constrictive. I use my sp3 with web mostly... because I can, and it works great with my fat fingers. I want win10 too but win8.1 is awesome... now if only I can get 8.1 on my lumia icon =(
  • I am running wp8.1on my icon, sign up for the developer preview to get it. I was tired waiting for Verizon.
  • Same here!
  • And you Sir are talking out your rear end. Have you used Win8,8.1 or 10? From your comments I'm going to guess not. People who take time to Win8/8.1 discover its not that different than using 7 (without a start menu). Win 8 is much faster and has many features that are better than 7, yet people fall for the ridiculous media attack that occurred when it released. Win 10 is making some changes that will improve enterprise use for those who hate to learn new things when it comes to IT. I use 8.1 and I installed Win 10 preview and frankly my screen looks exactly the same on both. 90% of the time (desktop).
  • The surface is not just for apps, don't you get it?? Its like a laptop, now do you expect a youtube app on a laptop? Hell no!, use the bloody desktop site. Now, what 'tablet' has full office suite, can run photoshop/Adobe suites, and play recent and powerful games (like those on dedicated consoles, not cheap stuff off an online store), what 'tablet' can run 3D modelling software, can render realistic images, run some of the nest CFD software from Autodesk...? Do I have to go on? Now if you can do that stuff on an iPad, I'll buy one. Your app comment isn't strong. The Windows store is a little over 2 years old (?) and windows doesnt really need the apps. (although Microsoft allows people to make them) the only apps i have from the store are the preinstalled ones, all my games are steam games. But if you want to surf the web and olay little free games from a web store, then iPad isn't even a choice. Get something half the price with more functionality. Get an android tablet if you're that kind of person.
  • He was probably at stage 33 in angry birds not making 3D animation during the boring conversation.
  • I was thinking he was that kind of person
  • I totally agree. Well said
  • Give a man a mac and he will use it.. Give him a windows PC and he will be troubleshooting your PC problems and even build his own from scratch- old American proverb
  • I wouldnt use a mac if you gave me one. I've used them before - I know I could learn it if I had to, but I would rather stick with what is familiar that I like.
  • I think you are refering to Linux, or maybe you have years of not using latest Windows versions
  • I'm sure Candy Crush was a crucial app needed for proper election coverage.
  • Apps? These guys are using Facebook, Twitter, surfing the net and browsing Gmail. They're just find some drones.
  • We're talking about surface pro 3, that machine has the well known windows we all have use, always.
Basically it can have more apps than any other OS out there, it can run apps older than the concept of smartphone or Tablet.
  • @gilesjuk you obviously belong to that group of iDiots at CNN if you consider the change from XP to 7 to 8 to 8.1 to 10 drastic. In any case, studies have shown that CNN has one of the lowest viewership among news channels so that product placement at CNN was probably wasted money.
  • That's exactly why the iPad and iPhone suck. They aren't shit without apps. You don't need a gazillion apps on a Surface. I use the RT and iPad Mini daily, you can probably guess which one I prefer.
  • What do you mean keep changing there UI? The UI is basically the same with an added touch interface.
  • He's not using apps to inform the public about the news.... It probably only bring used as a teleprompter, so your logic make no sense here
  • The true is that I can't use the apple because they lack of several apps I use from time to time. I'm still to buy a tablet for personal use and probably it won't happen until I have to replace my laptop. About the interface, I like Windows8/8.1 interface and I haven't enjoyed the experience in Windows10 which is somewhat sad and contrary to what most people seems to like.
  • Really? That sounds like a comment from someone who has not used Windows 8 or 8.1. The UI has not been changed, just features added to address the issues that people seem to have with the OS. Windows 10 will only serve to make the OS even more familiar to those who seem to have had issues adapting to the new UI.
  • How much do you want to bet that they were just using the browser? My experience is that older people really don't use a lot of apps. Young people like to experiment with a bunch of different social apps and will jump on the most recent game or app trends and then quickly jump of as something new comes in.
  • WOW!!! Pretty bad. Hopefully it wasn't a real indictment of his, or the stations, view of the Surface product. Maybe, as many do, he uses multiple devices. Even THAT said, a picture is worth 1000 words and I can imagine the avalanche of criticism that Microsoft's Surface will likely now endure as a result of this image, regardless of WHY the commentator was using his iPad.
Apple gets ALL kind of FREE press and almost FANATIC support by some. Imagine if you will if
Apple Had Made the Surface Pro 3; An Apple Fans Quest to Replace His Laptop:
THIS APPLE FAN PARODY MIGHT CHEER US UP! :-)
    http://jltechword.wordpress.com/2014/10/16/the-ipad-air-pro-an-apple-fan...
  • That was awesome
  • Because commentators need youtube app to watch reality show...i mean trending news and surface doesn't have official app.
  • The surface is like a laptop. It doesn't need apps, although it has a little. Why dint they just use the desktop site? Much easier
  • Yeah but app is one click for them. Laziness? I guess.
  • Youtube.com link is pinned to my start screen... One click away too... So no excuse, and not laziness
  • Hundreds of YouTube apps in the WP store and I open ucbrowser and tap the YouTube shortcut there. What would you call me?
  • Productive
  • Pin the youtube site and it will look just like an app to them. There are also plenty of good youtube apps in the store.
  • Microsoft is marketing the Surface as both a laptop and a tablet, if it wants to compete against iPads them it needs to run and have the same apps. It doesn't matter if you think desktop is better, people like apps and with Windows it is the App Gap all over again, however unlike Windows Phone Microsoft is not doing anything to address it.
  • Well I wouldn't pay the price of a surface or an iPad just for a tablet. I'd pay for the pc side of it. Microsoft should push the pc capabilities of the surface in their adds
  • Put WP os on a big screen, then that could compete with ipad or any tabket. No matter how powerfull the surface is, still its in the line of laptop not tablet. Where to compare surface? Other hybrid, laptop and macbooks.
  • Yep, totally agree
  • No no no... I think I know what had happened. He got a notification.
"BATTERY LOW!! PLUG ME IN or I will sync all your nudes to icloud"
The guy now looks at the surface pro 3 and luckily has a USB cable in his bag.. BUTTTT.... Apple wont let you use USB. That was his Checkmate look.
  • Who the heck needs an official app to watch YouTube? Seriously, people who think that have a few chips missing on their motherboards.
  • Probably tried something on the surface and it crashed or he never used Windows to understand it and lets face it. 8 isn't user friendly.
  • Nope it isn't. But 8.1 is. And all new devices ship with 8.1 already installed so...
  • I have yet to have anything crash on my SP2. 8 is just as user friendly as OSX. It's all about learning to use the OS. If you are sticking to the tablet side of the OS, tapping on a tile is the same as clicking on an icon.
  • Why is this an issue, if I brought my tablet and one was there just to give me info about the election do you thing I would put all my info unto the surface just for a couple of hours to get my email, tweets and other notifications, no I wouldn't that don't make any sense, I would use my iPad for personal use and look at the surface for election info..... Nothing to see here.
  • Exactly.
  • 'personal use'.... isn't that like taking out your phone on air? thought they're not supposed to do that.
  • More powerful in hiding the iPad, if it weren't for those pesky camera guys
  • Not always a good thing. My SP3 drains at approximately 1%/min while playing Microsoft Mahjong. WTF?
  • Is this really a surprise. Nobody cares about Microsoft.
  • Some Americans are more ignorant than others
  • Most people here understand that a tablet is an ipad. Most journalist here are ignorant that the word itself, we see it every day on TV.
  • +920
  • Dicks. If they have a deal, they should honour it.
  • well said
  • The broadcasters ain't the ones who made the deal...
  • They work for the company that did, so...
  • Exactly.
  • created a meme for that http://imgur.com/plRiP3c
  • I'm sure Microsoft made a call to someone in charge at CNN today.
  • If he doesn't use it I don't mind take it home
  • Yep, they could make a deal with all engineers in my research lab, we would totally honor it! no need wasting an awesome device on those who don't really need it..
  • are you followed by cameramen?
  • We could work something out, and it'll probably be cheaper for MS anyways!
  • @taymur Why? Does this help? Nope.
  • +SP3, maybe windows central members should be hired to do product placement in their towns...
  • great idea. i would be all in it.
  • +930
  • Count me in!
  • Yeah, all in, a surface pro 3 would help me even more in my work, as i need microsoft viso and microsoft project. I already do it with the surface 2.... the company i work at drop their jaws when im in meetings, everyone is looking at the sruface, a lot of people approach and ask about it, some ask about it by name.
  • I mean lol, I already do. Just dont get paid for it
  • Same,I get a lot of people asking me about it, and coming away impressed, when I whip it out! SP3 that is.
  • Re: jfivieght,
I do this now. Every chance I get, I use my Windows Phone and SurfacePro2 to get my work done in public and I make sure they are visible to others. Share the wealth..
  • Everyone knows CNN sucks.
  • > topkek
They are the worst; second is probably MSNBC, then HLN, and Fox News.
[National] News in US is barely worth watching.
  • I guess it depends on how you define it. MSNBC is 20% news 80% opinion. Fox is 50-50 and CNN is 70-30 according to Pew Research.
  • And all of them are 100% fear mongering and bullshit. Cable news has done more damage to this country than pretty much any other single thing.
  • I trust CNN more than anyone else and I don't even watch news
  • Oh Boy smh. What can you do?
  • Make a better UI that doesn't suck ass?
  • You mean you suck ass? Man, you must have a bad taste in your mouth.
  • Well, he did say he sucks ass. No wonder he has a bad taste in his mouth.
  • because rows of icons is the best UI ever devised. Win 8.1 is basically the windows 7 UI, which no one complained about since it started, and the start screen which is equivelent to IOS' rows of icons except these icons provide more info than just a number to show notifications are available. You can switch between the two easiliy depending on what you are working on. Don't see why people have a problem with it.
  • They should all pay a fine and do a mandatory tv spot using the "iPad like tool" to cut a cake
  • good one :)
  • I can't believe this, morons!!!
  • Is CNN even relevant anymore?
  • Absolutely not, CNN was always a bad choise.
  • Nope
  • Definitely not relevant to Dish subscribers right now
  • More relevant than Windows 8.1.
  • Last rating show CNN drew 500k viewers in primetime. Windows 8 and 8.1 accounted for 16.8% of worldwide computers according to Net Applications. I don't know how many users that is, but I am certain it is considerably higher than 500k.  I'm pretty sure it is considerably higher than all the viewers of CNN shows for the whole week combined.
  • If they are not using, why microsoft doesn't give me one of those "SF Pro 3"? I would use every single day! :)
  • Every single hour !
  • Every single minute ;)
  • Every picosecond!
  • your comment seems faster!
  • That woman in the photo sure looks like a villain. Or villainess.
  • Such an angry face!
  • LOL
  • Wait, is it "she"?????
  • That "woman" is actually using an iPhone in landscape mode instead of the Surface, which is almost as crazy as what that guy is doing.
  • So many dumb people at cnn
  • He probably use iPad only apps. If not, he is moron
  • Yes like all other children, CNN maybe for childrens news in future.
  • Children's News Network? Lol
  • We all know surface is more capable device but it doesn't have that drooling factor like iPad. That's why iPads are more popular.
  • Wrong. People use what they know. UNIX is said to be more powerful than Windows. But you and I don't care about that. We simply stick to what we are used to.
  • I'll agree work this point, we had a Linux terminal server project running at a university and it never got of the ground... But the prowess over Vista/7 and definitely XP was demonstrated, but the learning curve (even with Linux mimicking MS UI) was not received, people will stick to what they know for as long as they can before even considering to switch...
  • That's a very good perspective too. iPads are popular that's why they're more popular I guess? lol
  • That guy is clearly playing candy crush saga and probably sucking at it.
  • I travel a bit, in airports alot. I purchase a SP3 as few weeks ago...and I can tell you there is more drool factor over the SP3 than there ever was when I toted around an iPad2. I've been asked multiple times about it. I tell them its a tablet, has the kickstand and detachable keyboard. Oh and then I tell them its a full Windows PC. They are always impressed. People are droned into iPads still. Microsoft getting the word out is best, people are way more impressed in my SP3, when I had my iPad, people just were like "Meh...its an iPad." You font get same reaction with a SP3.
  • Good comment...I made a comment in this thread that I think people really do want APPS and GOOD apps. I have to admit, the "good" apps for the SP3 in tablet mode are far and few in between. And no, I am not a troll. I have a SP3, Dell Venue 8 and a Windows Phone...for the "common person" they want good apps...
  • He probably just had some apps on the iPad that he liked. Don't see the big deal.
  • Or did some things one the iPad he didn't bother to see if he could do on the surface, which makes him a moron for that combined with the fact that someone is paying his job for product placement.
  • Does anyone drool over an ipad anymore? Sure when they came out they were sleek, good looking devices. However, all the tablets look about same now and most are more capable than the ipad. The ipads only real selling point is the apps number and and that they shaved a cm of teh thickness.
  • There free to send me a S Pro3. I have needs for it.
  • how will that benefit MS :-) ?, I wanna know so I can pitch the same idea of it works out
  • Hmm, they gain a happy customer? :)
  • Start a website making apologies for everything Microsoft does. You'll get a lot of free gear. It seems to work well.
  • I saw what you did there... ;)
  • Lol, great idea @Bodeanicus
  • the SP3 would actually serve its purpose rather than acting as a stand for a very much inferior device.
  • Not really surprising, CNN has always been biased against Microsoft
  • Microsoft gave them lamborghini and they still use wheelchair
  • Star comment of the day! How did you come up with that?

  • Fail. I'd be curious to hear why this guy insists on using the iPad. Also, why aren't there keyboards for those surfaces?
  • Because he has all the news and polling data apps available and set up on his iPad, uses its mail, twitter apps etc.
  • Because this is America, and he can use whatever he wants? Does Microsoft write his checks? Own CNN? No?
  • Lame
  • At home you can use whatever you want. At work, an employer will generally dictate what you use and will provide the hardware. Microsoft has a partnership with CNN and I believe they worked together on the polling data that Bing was using.
  • Look at these retarded. Their monkey hands ask over their garbage iPad screens
  • no harm done here....no one watches CNN
  • Maybe MSNBC would have been a safer bet for product placement.
  • You would think so...CNN???
I really don't know what MSFT was thinking going with CNN.
  • Omg... How brainwashed are people these days?
  • Extremely....
  • Exactly.
  • People used Windows for decades because it was familiar, and thus easy. An iPad is likely just more familiar to him. They need to get him his own device, then coach him on how to use it so it becomes familiar.
  • +930. Respect to you my friend.
  • Microsoft doesn't copy. Microsoft invents n publishes what other moron companies can't. Lets not forget what OS is used on the network PCs and since ever Windows 1 came, Mac was just looking for supporters at that time.
  • Exactly !
  • Look at him trying to type on an iPad it is clearly unprofessional. #Keyboardmasterrace
  • Exactly!
  • Well played sir.
  • Nothing could ever take my Cherry MX Blues away, especially an iPad lol. Long live keyboards.
  • The only iPad like tools are the morons on stage.
  • I laughed harder than I should.
  • Probably playing Candy Crush or something :) it's about all the iPads do better these days ;)
  • +1
  • Can't help but think...That there are Americans who make some serious kick ass technology...and then there are these who are so ignorant about them !!! God help America
  • Many would have you believe its "God bless America".
  • Because it is God bless America. Duh.
  • Lol. Just punning on his "God help America".
  • No, God Blessed America...
  • Isn't that the same thing? If god is blessing than he is also helping.
  • It's CNN, they're so bad nowadays they're almost at fox news levels of bad.
  • It's CNN - I'd be more upset if it were the Muppets show.
  • Lol
  • So it's a situation where msft gives em sp3's for free and they're still not using them? Good grief. That just does not look good. If there's a contract in place I wonder if that is designed to exclude competitors? Either way it looks shoddy.
  • I was thinking that, too, Poirots Progeny. Microsoft has to blame their own legal and marketing depts for gaffs like this. The agreement should have been written to exclude competitor devices from the set. Instead, it seems the Microsoft team thought everyone would love to test drive new devices on election night on live TV. Geeks.
  • HAHAHA! Just cant stop laughing. Reminds me of how my brother used to hide a comic book behind his text book to try and fool mom into thinking that he was studying. (It hardly ever worked there too)
  • Lol. He's smarter than these CNN guys. Guess he never got caught?
  • lol not in this case, he almost always got caught, but he would still keep trying ;)
  • What idiots, he looks so unprofessional. Look at all the stuff in front of him. I think that's ok in good office but no in front of the camera. He can have all that on the SP3. You look like an idiot typing on a touch screen.
  • Ha ha I love Microsoft products but you can't shove your bad name down anyone's throat. The surface is intimating to iPad users. Stuff actually moves on the screen.
  • Intimating or intimidating?
First? Then it's a good thing.
    Second? Give it time
  • Ok spell corrector. I'll leave it the way it is so you seem relevant. Keep your opinion
  • Oh come on, laugh at that... It was funny =P
  • actually they don't deserve surface tablets ....
  • You're right. Only the 10 people who bought one do.
  • oh boy ... At this point i think Microsoft should stop waisting money with the whole product placement thing .
  • I wouldn't worry too much, he's probably just trying to go for the high score on Swing Copters
  • And still not get far.
  • Upsss.....
  • Ha ha ha... Thought the US was supposed to be 'tech savvy'...? It's obvious they were using their own tablets which they are comfortable with... There's no question that the Pro 3 is superior in everyway...
  • Bitch. At least we have ipad and MS. What do you have? Water clocks and an abacus.
  • this is not microsoft fault, such these idiot people must use dump ipad instead of SP 3!!!!! why you microsoft, force these idiots to use your monster pack????!!!!! some people like me wishes to have one of your products and you are begging these fools!!!! try advertising it correctly in asia or middle east !!! stop force and convince american people !!!! let them use dump tools (no offence to all americans,, I love them and their country),but i dont understand some of them!!!!!
  • Uhm actually its Microsoft's fault. The Surface is more time consuming. Plus iPad makes them look cool. They wont actually need the higher end specs of the surface has and if they do they would rather get a proper laptop which is more practical and much more powerful than the surface.
  • Ouch! Really?
  • iPad has become synonymous with tablets. Most of the technically unsavvy I know will refer to any tablet they see as an iPad. Apple got it right, they may not have the biggest market share with their OS, but they sure do with their hardware. It'll be hard for MS to do battle right now without any truly overwhelming USP.
  • And old people still refer to the internet as aol. And recording something on a DVR taping it. Just because some people are too dumb to join the 21st century, doesn't make it right.
  • Any game system is a Nintendo, any plastic bandage is a Band-Aid, any tissue is a Kleenex, any cola is a Coke. People seem to only be able to learn a few things about the world and stop learning.
  • Don't forget xerox
  • How I wish I could slap his idiotic face with my Surface 2 and then have the kickstand open and standing on this throat while "Die motherfucker, die" is playing through the Surface..
  • That's murder.
  • LOL +1020
  • Doubleplusungoodful
  • Lol seriously? Surface pro is computer, technically everything you can do on iPad, you can only get better with surface pro 3
    He is being stupid lol
  • Rekt
  • The tag line of 'any press is good press' usually applies, unless you happen to be Microsoft and having Windows 8.... This will probably go viral unfortunately along with claims of how bad the Surface is. Just what MS needed... They should really stop doing this stuff and just make better commercials and make sure the people they give stuff to actuall like it.
  • This is not good and I'm sure the Apple fans are having a field day on this picture, but it does show something... MS still have a BIG task ahead of them to convert iPad users to the Surface. When you give someone a Surface and they don't use it, there must be a problem - i.e. unfamiliar interface, missing apps etc - it's not because the CNN presenter is dumb. I think they should get a team from MS in to do a post mortem in and find out what the problem is and help educate the presenters. I wonder if they were shown how to use them etc?
  • Leaked wanking stuff is available via iPad as its in iCloud, unfortunately Surface Pro is Pro stuff not Porn stuff.
  • Since CNN isn't using them, could you guys tell Microsoft that I'd be happy to take one off their hands? I'd product placement that thing till I bleed!
  • God, this looks like a big fucking conspiracy. Seriously! Every time Microsoft tries to promote the Surface, those dimwits they make a contract with always find a way to advertise the iPad, instead. They can't be that stupid; it has got to be on purpose.
  • iDiots
  • i see what you did there..
  • The SP3 is basically a full blown laptop, are these people so moronic they cant utilize a full on work tool? Bet if they were macs they wouldnt ignore them, just typical bias and ignorance. And even worse, these are the same users who get the best of Microsoft's products while we who actually buy and enjoy using their products get treated like crap. Maybe its just karma.....
  • I think MS should have offered them a short training course as well on how to use them first.
  • Agreed - see my point above too
  • Avaru enthu venelum upayogikkate... Enichu onnum illa.. I am using a windows phone and I am happy with it... Halla pinne..
  • Is that Latin? If so, I didn't understand a thing.
  • One saving grace is that nobody that has Dish Network would've seen it, lol. CNN and Cartoon Network are both fighting with them right now. That, and CNN's viewers lean lost iPad owners. Microsoft should've made a deal with Fox News instead
  • Okay, that got completely screwed up by my phone (stupid Android).  It was meant to say that most CNN viewers lean left, like most iPad owners. Side Note: Don't buy an LG G3, the camera is NOT as great as they make it sound.  The image tends to blur, there are FOUR shooting modes and FOUR options, complete crap.  If you use the flash, kiss the moment goodbye, because you're going to miss it.  Also, the 4K display doesn't look nearly as sharp as what you expect.  I don't know if it's somehow TOO sharp?  It just looks dull a lot of times.  And there are occasional software lags out of nowhere.  Not good for what is supposed to be very high end.  Mine's going back, and I'm going to either get a Lumia 1020, or the 830, I'll see how it looks Friday.
  • If Microsoft what's somebody to use it give it off cost... We are much obliged to have one
  • Bret Bair on Fox News used to use a Surface Pro. No wonder no one watches CNN...
  • Further proving how intelligent they are. Hint: Not very.
  • They are all gay. Apple products are for gay.
  • Dude think what you will. But in this age, you shouldn't say that out loud.
  • Why not. Gays come out all the time and say gay. Colored folk say nigga or full on nigge* all the time. Still ok. Double standard.
  • Try not to speak for us "colored folk", okay?
  • I'll be fair.
  • Those other examples are irrelevant. On the table here is Jason94's use of the word 'gay', which was clearly derogatory and therefore homophobic and not acceptable.
  • Wow, the stupid, it burns.
  • You mean gay in not gay, but gayish. In what they think is more important. Then I agree.
  • The Windows masses and the streets are watching bitches. Get your ish straight!
  • Well...He doesn't need to do complicated work, so using iPad is fair...
  • Windows metro shouldn't be complicated to use. Who knows maybe they were instructed not to touch the surface pro? Microsoft might want to develop a custom app so they can read their news off it.
  • Go to hell CNN
  • Interesting article, but why want to switch? What are the arguments???
  • They don't deserve it. Wait, in future they will come and ask for it that time you do like that.
  • Wow! That hurts!!!
  • There's a pretty good chance the iPad is his personal device. Many companies, esp someone like CNN, won't allow employees to load their personal mail accounts / apps on company devices. ALSO it could be that the Surface devices are meant for the desks, and therefore are often left unattended, so they don't have user information on them. If I was running IT there, that's how I would be doing it.
  • Ade your thinking is spot on. Microsoft might want to give out SP3's to the anchors for personal usage.
  • Microsoft should have used this budget to expand Bing and Microsoft services to other parts of the world, especially India instead on wasting it on these STUPID AMERICANS!!
  • That's rude. Maybe racist. In case you didn't know, Microsoft is an American company.
    (I'm not American)
  • I agree with your, but just to point out, American isn't a race. Unfortunately, American hatred has been "cool". It's like no one remembers the US saving their ass in WWII or any of the other countless good thing they do and instead focus on the bad and the mistakes.
I can't same I blame anyone too much, its the same here in the US. Patriotism is dying.
  • The biggest country station in Pittsburgh stopped playing the national anthem every morning.  I called in and asked why.  Their answer?  "We had people call in and complain that they were tired of hearing it."  Really people?  I took them off of my presets. And Zuchit, I agree, MS should focus on Bing and MS Services over in India.  If it makes them more capable in tech support, I'm all for it.
  • At least no one watches CNN anyway.
  • Well...
  • OMG !! Stupid level = Over 9000 ***Facepalm. My brain can't take this.
  • They were just distressed because they knew of the turnout of last nights elections. I even saw a tear in Andersons little eye...
  • Idiots
  • That's the problem with MS, stop begging!!! Forget the US and simply promote outside, there's Europe, south America, central America, Africa, Asia. Why keep begging for help and constantly being ignored, just look to the places that would actually help the OS. I say f@$k those American entities that do that shit to MS and concentrate on those that are truly willing to promote the MS products. What CNN did was a blatant show of disrespect to MS and they shouldn't accept that but did you expect that people who've used iPads only would suddenly change to surface pros!! More evidence of the MS execs sitting down on their brains instead of their asses.
  • You're a moron.
No one has more GLOBAL reach than US based companies. In thus case CNN.
American companies and media set the tone for the world. Ignoring that would be a huge mistake.
  • Apparently because it's "the tablet that can replace your laptop" and not "the tablet that can replace your tablet."
  • Look at that hunt and peck typing
  • How else would you do it on an iPad screen?
  • Shame on CNN. Microsoft gave them the best and the most powerful tablets they have, why use an iPad if you have something better in front of you?
  • Becauset he iPad is better. It's dead simple, fast, and they got the UI right the first time. They didn't throw a badly designed skin over the top of their desktop OS, and tell their customers to suck it up and deal with it. That picture tells anyone everything they need to know about the state of affairs in the tablet market. Microsoft lost. Because they're complacent, and stupid.
  • Lol, in there may be an infinite amount of parallel universes, but not even in one of them is the iPad better
  • Oh shut up, Bogusanicus... =/
  • Is that why the guys in the AT&T stores usually carry two iPads?  You know, because the each keep freezing up and they switch back and forth until one works?  I seriously lost an hour of my life because of Apple.  I want it back.
  • That's funny
  • Maybe Apple is paying to see this happening
  • You also need to take into account that these guys need to be updated quickly. Looks like this was during the midterms, where viewership was high, and where broadcasters are trying to call races seconds before others. They needed to use something they were familiar with in that high stress environment. If someone gave me a computer I knew nothing about to do my job on the most important day of the past two years, I wouldn't use it either.
  • Maybe they should have given them Windows Phones with Cortana instead, she would have told them right away! =P
  • Who watches CNN?
  • Well, if they don't want them, I'll take one. Seriously. Please.
  • Microsoft please stop comparing the Surface Pro 3 with anything else. Surface Pro 3 is the best there is, nothing comes close. Surface Pro 3 is something unique and different, not to be compared with iPad or Android as it does not comes close! Microsoft should stop comparing their product with others and start showing what their product can do best
  • I saw this last night watching the broadcast and wasn't surprises. If these aren't their everyday devices that they are trained to use then I wouldn't expect them to use them on set.
  • Ipad is cool. Microsoft Not. They need to understand that. Microsoft never gonna be cool. You won't score any lady with a Microsoft product :P
  • If people "score" because they use an Apple product, they should really reconsider their type.
  • iPad stopped being cool 3 years ago. Now only tools and octogenerians use them.
  • How do we know its an iPad?
  • It's CNN...where the news goes to die. To hell with them.
  • I'm not very worried about CNN. They aren't the most intelligent people and what do they have like 100 viewers?
  • How stupid do you have to be?
  • More proof that news anchors are not the sharpest tools in the shed. If MS isn't providing some kind of training on the Surface, they should. Not because the Surface is hard to use, but to break ignorant assumptions made by those who have never used one.
  • Smh.....stupid people!! Guess i won't trust CNN news from now on
  • Apple Fanboys = Idiots
  • no need to mention that everyone knows the truth. I don't hate apple but hate its fanboyism. i mean no one ever tries also to be a mercedes fan or a audi fan or exaggerate about it very much. knowing apple fanboys think they are the best.
  • They were in shock and needed their toy to calm their nerves. Just as a child needs their teddy bear.
  • Doesn't surprise me. CNN is part of Time Warner. Have you read Time magazine? It should be renamed "Apple Adverts Disguised as News Weekly"
  • Idiots! Just. Total Idiots
  • Then again...this is CNN.
  • Some people cant learn new things...
  • Simple - Microsoft should demand a refund for the paid placement and let the Network take it out of his wages. CNN producers should have made clearer to this idiot and the team that no personal tablets allowed on screen. You would think the reporter would be good with details too.
  • Using iCrap is more enjoyable (They think lol
  • It's alright Microsoft, CNN is not worthy to use your products. Try pushing for BBC, they are the boss.
  • The sad part about it is that he appears to be typing on on it as if he needs a touch cover. I'm sure it's his personal iPad and he is technically being insubordinate. Douche bags like that piss me off!
  • What makes this kind of funny to me, is I have experienced the same thing in my own company. We have issued Surface Pro 3s to all of our Sales Managers. Needless to say, they still carry their iPads around with them and I have caught them in the office using the iPad at their desk while the Surface sits in their bag... Wtf...
  • Take away the iPad for a day and see what happens. Our company did that and it forced them to use the sp3 and now they leave the iPad in the bag and at office during trips.
  •  I went down to Atlantis and hung out with Aquaman last night. True story.
  • Maybe your IT department are the only people who think the Surface is worth anything. Fanboys, gamers, and IT guys ARE the only people who like these things, you know.
  • Lol anyone who wants to do something the least bit productive will prefer the surface. You're a moron if you think otherwise. IPad is fine if you want to do basic tasks, but then again, so is anything else
  • My local new station has the same thing going on. Great sp3 setting up in front for great adverting but they are all using ipads setting just behind them. Not a great sales pitch and big fail for advertising if you ask me.
  • I wonder if that is the actor's personal device? If so, the issue should be between CNN and the actor. If it was a CNN device, then MS should have had a clause to deal with this financially.
  • They needed to take 30 minutes to do simple account set up login and then download some key apps. Do we know if they were even turned on?
  • Could you imagine if Pepsi paid to have their drinks on the table and the clowns each had a can of Coke behind them. Someone's head would roll.
  • +1000
  • He just looks like an idiot tapping with his fingers on a touchscreen when there is a full fledged keyboard just in front of him... Microsoft should adress this with CNN management and put and end to this stupidity. They dont pay good money for this kind of insult!!
  • At the end of the day, some sheep just don't want to be wolves.
  • Why does the media like CNET and CNN dislike Microsoft? What the heck is wrong with people, Apple is so cliche, every other 5people on the planet own there product
  • Because Windows 8's UI is absolute garbage. The vast majority of people hate it. With a passion. When you can't give something away, you should take the hint. I give Microsoft props for trying something new, but it was a complete and total failure. That picture is all the proof you need.
  • Yeh, but man iOS on all devices are just so old and cliche... iOS os just a general dull, boring, simple UI... I can't stand it! Plehhh... Never using that crud in my life
  • It's not the same as when it first came out, stop repeating tired old statements. The UI is based off the phones, great for touch and enhanced now for productivity. Whatever holes in the UI it had when released have since been addressed and corrected. =/
  • Its UI is terrible. Its just a bunch of icons that sit there on a screen with an occasional number display of a notification, there's no flipping around or widgets, its the exact same as day 1 my friend. The functionality is great, yes, but iOS is just nit for me, its too lame and everyone uses it, I like to bedifferent
  • People still watch CNN news?
  • As for me, not anymore!!.
  • Well, look at it this way - CNN's pundits were wrong about what was going to happen in this election. When you are wrong - way wrong - on national TV, the clench factor sets in. When the clench factor sets in, you reach for the familiar. Shame on MS for not getting that deal done in time for the fools on CNN to get familiar with the Surface.
  • Well CNN is probably the worst news agency in the world, north Koreans deliver more truth.
  • The really sad thing is whatever they have on stage, is just a prop. You know not a single one of them know how to power up and sign in with their Apple ID....I mean Microsoft ID.
  • I've never tried it but couldn't they use the Apple ID as their Microsoft ID? Supposedly, you should be able to use any email address...
  • Meh it is what it is.
  • It's all business politics done by Apple...
  • True. They made a good product that the vast majority of the population prefer, and the product sells itself. People would rather buy an iPad than take a Surface for free.
  • You would have to be a fan boy to think the surface is not better. Most People just like what the next person likes, and so it goes on. when was the last time the majority of the people in our country had their own opinion? All like a bunch of high schoolers
  • I was a novice but those are dude.
  • OMG Cnn . I really. Hate Apple . Ipads are WEAK.
  • Not even sure why they would do that. Unless they didn't have type covers with them and felt more comfortable using what they know best :S
  • MS is trying hard to tap into that zeitgeist with product placement deals all over the place. MS Bands in Agents of Shield. Surfaces and Windows-branded AIO's in lots of shows like Elementary and Arrow. Sometimes they seem pretty ham-fisted and gratuitous, honestly, and then some generate bad press like this.
Apple owes at least some of its success to a solid product placement effort but MS' efforts in this space so far leave much to be desired, in my eyes.
  • These comment sections are getting more ridiculous by the day, lol.
  • Totally agree.
  • Morons....
  • CNN sucks LOL
  • Why do people say the is like a laptop? It IS an ultrabook laptop. The Surface pro runs everything a traditional desktop or laptop runs. It's miles better than a restrictive iPad, they don't have to go to a store to get apps from but if that's too complicated you can still go to the store.
  • Exactly. Microsoft can't seem to understand that the reason tablets became popular is most people DON'T want to lug a laptop around. How is this so hard to understand? "Surface has Office!" So the F what? I'd be on my desktop or laptop if I wanted to use Office!
  • You seem stuck in the mindset of a few years ago...not ready for the future smh =[
  • After getting my surface pro 3 I have not used my iPad. Not even once.
  • Who is CNN again??
  • When it comes to product placement, there are a few things to consider.  Were they given training on using the SP3? Were they allowed to log into their accounts/social networks on the SP3 ahead of time? If they were tweeting or emailing during the show but not logged in on the SP3 that would be a good reason to pull out their personal device. It is sad and a poor showing for the $$$ MS invests in product placement.  I can only imagine that MS will be asking for some of their $$$ back on this one.
  • With product placements, they don't actually use the devices. Most of the times these devices are turned off.
  • Both CNN and MSNBC were using them.
  • He should be punished or they (CNN) should owe Microsoft some money..
  • Commentator thought: "What is this Surface Pro 3? Hmm... it doesn't have a mouse. Let me bring out my iPad, it is a touchscreen device so its much easier to use."
  • dumbasses
  • Then send me One, MSFT please I really appreciate the Surface no like the ignorant reporters from CNN
  • Some lecturers are still old-fashioned they are used to chalk. I guess that's how those dudes are.
  • Deal gone bad, not good for Microsoft
  • Also. If yuh guys watch agents of shield, you'll see the change in product placement. At first. There was only microsoft's products. Now apple products are also getting in it. -_-
  • Just hope Microsoft got their money back.
  • that shows how ignorant they are when it comes to technology.. they can't even tell which is a more powerful and versatile device...  shows how brain-washed they are.. the power of marketing, brand, and simply being a blind sheep in the herd...
  • Not surprising at all, more like budget killer.
  • Not about how powerful most times about ease of use and simplicity
  • And publicity
  • Well if they dont want them I'll take one.
  • To continue what I was saying on Twitter, CNN is biased towards Apple. And like most Apple users, they won't use other products, even if they are better. This should come as a surprise to no one.
  • The comments in this thread are starting to make Windows users quite bad.. :)
  • Agree, but some are also for good laughs
  • I keep saying this again and again: Microsoft's WORST enemies are it's own partners. Remember the last windows phone even where HTC was the "official" windows phone. The 8X turned out to be crap. Microsoft partnered with SoftCard 4 years ago. Some of us are only now getting their app. And this is after they started working with their competition Apple. The NFL and CNN are just the latest. Microsoft needs to stop paying for partnerships and use that money on advertising & R&D. That money spent on the NFL could've gone to paying developers extra money to move their apps to Microsoft's platforms and it would've been better spent than on CNN.
  • This is why product placement is utter BS.
  • Rather for newsreaders/commentors. In a movie/episodes it's OK.
  • The reality is the commentaors probably use apps not available on Surface or Windows platform. The Surface 3 is a great device, but if it's not the tool you use 99.99% of the time, you're certainly not going to use it at a critical moment like live tv and a breaking news situation.
  • Ouch
  • probably using an app that we dont have
  • Cartoon News Network!
  • Morons. I'll use my giant iPhone rather than this amazing PC.
  • Look at the guy. Cleary he needs a "dumb device" instead of the more powerful/flexible Surface.
  • Has anyone considered that this picture might have been taken during a time when he was using his own personal iPad for personal use.  Perhaps CNN didn't want them to place their personal email stuff on the Surface Pro 3 and he had to check his personal email on his own personal device.  The Surface Pro 3 might have been placed there for them to use for the actual video production (election coverage) that was taking place with actual CNN apps and programs running, but he might not have had is personal emails on the Surface Pro 3 and was merely checking his personal email on his personal iPad.  I do this at work all the time.  My office doesn't allow me to access my personal emails on the business computer, so I bring my Surface Pro to work with me and check my personal emails on it instead.  Granted, it might not have been a good idea for him to be doing that in plain sight of the set, and that isn't a good photo-op for Microsoft, but it is what it is, or might be.
  • Yep, the title is probably misleading. I even think that's the case.
  • Hahaahahaha morons. Ignorant biotches. So simple minded.
  • You guys are just butt hurt - typical reaction from fanboys. Do you know how the rollout happened? If they didn't give them these Surfaces for at least a month to get used to it, do you expect them to just go up there one morning and start using a completely new platform? For these guys, it's productivity that matters. If they're more productive using their iPad, so be it. Good product, perhaps just a fail in how the change was implemented.
  • Calling names does not help to get a point. To learn what can be done on a tablet, only needs half a day. ROFL. Anyway, here in Europe most users are smarter and use (small) laptops and hybrids for things like that.
  • This http://gizmodo.com/5980200/blackberry-spokesperson-alicia-keys-tweets-fr...
  • Candy crush on the job.
  • I'm so sorry for them.....They are so stupid.... Surface Vs any kind of gadget...will be better in any field....
  • He was just so annoyed the lady in the green shirt kept talking over everybody that he started playing games on his iSheep pad. It was a shame to see the Surface tablets ignored by everyone, not just this guy.
  • This was MSFT's fault, at least those who implemented the idea. They placed them there as props. It LOOKED stupid having every single person at the table with a Suface 3 propped up in front of them. They even had the kickstands at the exact same angle for all of them. I saw them do the same thing on the FOX NFL pregame show before the football games last Sunday. Looked equally stupid. They would have been better off finding one or two in the group who REALLY wanted to use one and let it be on the table with just them.    The idea was fine.  Implementation was terrible.  Fire the marketing team who did that
  • That comment was SPICY! ;p * and smart =D
  • Just goes to show how many bozos there are in the media...
  • Is he ignoring the SP3 or using both? Sometimes I feel we see things that aren't there. MS just needs to know, if they don't know allready, that this is no good publicity. All other attention is to much attention for the newsreader.
  • I wish Microsoft would sue them, but it would be made public and that wouldn't look good. Stupid fcuks...
  • Well, we have to agree that to move from one system to another takes some time. But also the iPad hardware is the best around. It has been a long time since someone did a responsiveness time comparison between devices. But when it was done a while ago even the iPhone 3 bit the Lumia 900 and galaxy S3. The speed that the ipads respond to the touch is so fast that it makes it a lot more organic to use. I don't know if it's due to hardware or software. But something there just makes the device nicer to the touch. Also as you slide the finger across the screen the movement doesn't jerk not even a bit. Seem like that on my windows phone as I scroll the touch panel sometimes understands in a way and it jerk a little. Microsoft really needs to work on the touch of their devices.
  • I'm not surprised. CNN has yet to run a single story about the Microsoft Band. It's pathetic what passes for a news agency these days.
  • Well... http://money.cnn.com/2014/10/30/technology/innovationnation/microsoft-ba... Not the most positive one but admittedly MS was kind of asking for it with that particular marketing line.. :)
  • Ya this just makes the newscasters look like mindless children. They literally look so stupid staring down at those iPads instead of using the full blown piece if badassery in front of them.
  • Give it a look! http://bgr.com/2013/09/20/iphone-android-touch-screen-responsiveness/
  • ipad shmypad.
  • Who watches cnn anyway? They're not exactly the brightest bulbs out there with they're left wing bias, that's why they're ratings are tanked.
  • "with they're left wing bias, that's why they're ratings are tanked" Talking about bright bulbs..  ;)
  • Just like Verizon salesman who browbeat you into buying something else. Why is Microsoft wasting money on these deals when their product isn't being used, or sold? If they want to throw money away, I'll take some.
  • We don't know what's going on in this picture, perhaps he has something in an Apple specific app (iCloud - not available anywhere else) that he needed to see to use on the Surface to continue working. If you have most of your life wrapped in plastic, you might need to break it out to move it sometimes. Calling these people OR each other names is just infantile... Except you, Boringicus. You suck lol =P I'm KIDDING...lol but you do. ;)
  • FOX is not news, doesn't even try to be.
  • A lot can be said about this. But the question remains, why? It is true that some people blame MS and it is true that it is not easy for people to switch ecosystem when it comes to OS. I do believe though that many people are missing out on what MS can offer. But the ultimate question still remains... Why? Why didn't they use the surface?
  • I don't see this as a big deal.  On the iPad, he probably had some polling data apps that simply wouldn't have been available to him on the Surface/Windows
  • It'd be funnier if it wasn't si frustrating.
  • Morons don't need better machines.
  • News commentators aren't the brightest bunch.  Apple may be all they can handle.
  • Funny the people that say in his defense it takes years of training to get used to new operating systems, but how long did it take him to get to used to his iPad? The surface is a windows PC. It's not some strange tablet that's brand new. CNN uses windows desktop PC this is just a smaller sleeker version of those same PC.
  • What I don't understand is that it's not contractually agreed that when providing these free products and probably also some additional payments, that competing products are not allowed. It's not as if those ipads are really needed for them to do their work anyway.
  • Well, they probably are needed - they are their personal devices with all their contacts, personal twitter and email accounts, news feed serives, source data, survey/poll data for lots of years  etc. set up as they want and need to be able to provide essentially live commentary... Imagine yourself being asked to do that, and then probably just given a chair in front of a Surface that is not yours and not configured for you and for your data and contacts.
  • Ah, never  thought about that :) I guess that individual preconfiguration should be a part of the product placement then! Including training....should take no more than a day.
  • Screw CNN give me the free Surface Pro 3 I'll advertise it way better.
  • If the dude was comfortable using his iPad, why should he have to change to what someone else wants him to use.  Maybe he'd have to take time to relearn the newer Windows and he doesn't want to be bothered.
  • How luck they are. I could do with one here in Ghana. Infact all I need for Christmas is a MS Surface Pro 3.
  • Unfortunately you also fall into the category of those that should be left behind. Mr. Idiot, MS is trying to increase US market share not the world per se as MS has a higher % outside of the US than in its own backyard. WTF watches CNN outside of America especially when it's an English station and they're so much more news stations in the eastern side of the planet that's more watched than CNN. So to you CNN could have put the boxes on the stage and it would have been ok. Dumbass why do you think they're more interested in showing to the American audiences through CNN?? MS wanted to increase American market share not the world yet. They believe home first and all else later.
  • CNN morons
  • Microsoft should have gone with fox news.
  • You're the MORON as you've just awoken from a backwater bubble since its proven that most America watch either FOX news, local or MSNBC for their daily dose of today's happenings. Read more posts down and you'll get more ammunition against your clownassed talk about CNN global appeal that was so '90s and this is 2014->!!!
  • No offense to him, but he looks really stupid there trying to type with his fingers. He could be a poster child for not using an ipad.
  • That's not even the good picture. Theres a better one where they're leaning their iPad up against the surface, essentially using the surface as a $1000 iPad stand. Morons....
  • The guy with the iPad looks like he is having problem typing lol just look at his face
  • Well actually the OS is what they don't like more about the Surface, who doesn't want a mobile OS that is easy, clean and solid to use and pretty much can do what you need and can work as a pc, and the big bonus is its fun, its more on the entertainment side plus you have a lot of apps to download and all we want is having fun right?, not a good move there Microsoft. The Surface is great and powerful though and it looks cool but they don't need it anyway, its more on the heavy work side, Microsoft should think of that. Plus mobile is more demanding nowadays, look around most people uses mobile because right? Because it can pretty much do what pc can do and its easy. I don't think Microsoft really understand what a basic consumer wants, I mean a BASIC CONSUMER not the office type people, and actually most of us is just a basic consumer even those tv presenters and we don't want the hassle of a windows os has. Microsoft should change their strategy and way of thinking, What most of us want is fun, easy powerful as pc, plus we use our phones and tablets more often and that's why the surface is not boosting in sales that much because its basically a pc with an inconvenient body for a pc. The Yoga pro 3 is actually more practical if you want a tablet/pc and it looks much better. I love the idea of the surface, but its just not gonna work, maybe it will if they'll make a new os which has the power of a pc and works just like a mobile
  • Those commentators should be fired as well as the person in charge of advertising. This should be more controlled so that this kind of thing NEVER happens. Completely stupid and unprofessional, regardless of the company paying for advertising. If you’re a company taking money from someone, at least show some respect and do what you’re paid to. I hope they lose the deal for this and MS takes their money elsewhere.
  • Is that really product placement gone wrong or just some bloke on his own private iPad? One person. Checking his own emails? Facebooking? How is it different than him just using an iPhone? Storm in a tea cup.

  • Is there any legal consequences to this? Was Microsoft in any sorta contracting, promotional partnership with CNN to use its Microsoft Surface product? And thus, these morons using other (probably their own personal) devices on air breaks their agreement? If I were the guy who set up this deal (if I am right) I'd be ticked and filing a lawsuit.

  • They don't know how to use new technology. Don't worry Microsoft, that's how you know who is smarter.
  • So they gave them a failed device nobody is buying loaded with the least popular Windows version, second to XP, and they wonder why they weren't using them?
  • Can't see how this is "product placement gone wrong." Bit sensationalist. It's one bloke. On an iPad. Probably his own. Checking email and Facebook that he maybe can't do on his corporate offering for a slew of reasons. How is it different to him using an iPhone?
  • A surface. A device that tries to be 2 things but doesn't excel at being either one. No wonder is a total failure. MS should stop bleeding money and stop making this device. They can't give them away.
  • They are ipads u people act like leaving stupid simple icons are so hard, and act like these people never used a PC before,
  • no keyboard provided along with free sp3.  that is textbook definition of fail.  >"<
  • I'm not a fan of CNN, but I would guess they were given little to no training on these devices.
  • Because of this I will stop watching CNN.
  • But that doesn't look like iPad.
  • Wait, people still watch CNN in US?
  • Chicken noodle network
  • I am a full supporter of the Microsoft Ecosystem but I have to admit, the "tablet apps" (i.e. Modern) are just not there or what users what. They have a long way to go for "iPad" people to use the Surface Pro 3 as a tablet.
  • Microsoft needs to put someone in charge of their product placements. Whenever you have a sponsorship like this, a team should visit and explain the product to the so called "talent". Set it up for them and work with them. The contract should also include a provision that if the "talent" uses or promotes a rival product on the air, then the contract become null and void and they have to return a portion or all of the money paid.
  • Product placement on CNN? What was the Grand Old Opera not available? What tech consumer watches CNN for their news? Hate to break it to you but Grandma doesn't care about ANY tablet other than the one she gets for free from the kids and they'll get her whatever they are comfortable using themselves. Above that, the CNN watcher isnt about to drop $1000 on a tablet EVER. You get an honest response from a Bigbox store employee, they'll tell you the iPads that sell are last years discounted model. Want to sell Surface Tabs? Take all the advertising budget and put it towards lowering the price of the unit itself. Nobody with a gaming rig, file/media server/HTPC in constant play or KIDS is going to drop the lion's share of their tech budget onto a Surface Tab with so much other kit to keep up. It's a great secondary device for mom, dad or YOU but it's not one for being community property and its too bad no one at Microsoft has realized it yet.
  • JUST LOOK AT THEIR RETARD FACES AND PROBLEM SOLVED
  • What a dick-head
  • He's getting a double chin!
  • In my opinion, the Surface 3 is a better device than the iPad, however, society has decided that Microsoft should go away.  The life cycle of Microsoft is dying, and all of the majority wants Microsoft to fail no matter how good they can produce competitive hardware/software.  I think that we have to accept the fact that Microsoft will never have the same respect as it once had.  This is hard to accept, but it is true.  Apple and Google has won the technology respect of the 21st Century, so, think:  1) there is buzz about the Microsoft Band, but it will hardly place a dent once Apple releases their version (just watch and observe), 2) it has been five years since Windows Phone was released, yet, it will continually be in third place marketshare wise, 3) there are still some big developers that will not produce their apps for Windows Phone, and it is pathetic when a useful app is pulled by some mysterious reason (i.e. American Airlines, Comixology, etc.), 4) negative reception for Windows 8, 5) big name companies like NFL and CNN, flat outright insults the Microsoft Surface, by saying and using Apple iPad, in light, of the fact that Microsoft has requested for product placement for Marketing, and 6) over 7/8 of the technology news sites parade Apple and Google to billions of viewers, and bashes Microsoft hardware/software for only the reason that they silently hate Microsoft (and they will go as far as to lie, and deny that they don't hate Microsoft, yet, their actions speak otherwise). Microsoft is doomed, and I love them, hence, I have a Lumia 1520, Yoga 2 Pro, Dell L502x, and my wife has a Lumia 925, but, I can't stand it anymore.
  • What's CNN? Never heard of it.
  • Hate him for what you will, but there's obviously a reason why he's using the iPad.. We just don't know what it is... Could be his personal one for all you know.. Either way MS still has its work cut out for itself..
  • What a MORON of a dick he is.
  • He may not know how to use a Surface, but I know how to remove CNN from favorites on my Xbox One OneGuide!
  • What does it matter? It happened on CNN. It's not like anyone saw it.
  • Omg...so, so many idiots. So many.
  • If you don`t use it, please send me 1 for free.
  • They are just getting ready to do a Windows Easy Transfer on the Air.
  • Their rich so they are probably used to apple..our maybe they where comparing the two..that's what i would do if i had both.
