There’s more than just turkey on the table this holiday season. Fans of indie games on Xbox have also been eating good this month with an absolutely packed roster of new releases to check out. With nearly 80 new titles this month vying for your free time, your new favorite game could be waiting for you. Demonschool doesn’t just dip its toes into the nostalgia pool; it full-on embraces the era that influences it and parades them out for everybody to see. This RPG with tactical battles draws on vintage horror with influences from 70s-era Italian films and classic horror manga to introduce gamers to Faye and her collective of misfit companions.

Set within a fictional game console, developers Necrosoft Games conceptualized a set of rules and hardware limitations that shaped the game’s story and action. Demonschool challenges players to engage in battles with tactical positioning against some pretty gruesome monsters who can be found in the realm between human and demon worlds.

When Faye and the crew aren’t battling monsters, they’re heading to class to level up their demon-fighting skills, and there are more than 14 characters for players to meet and build relationships. Demonschool is a chunky RPG, and the decisions made by the player influence the game’s endings, so there’s plenty to keep you busy through a cold, dark winter.

Demonschool is available now on Xbox Series X|S.

There’s just something about the cooler weather that brings us all together, but it also makes getting together a little more of a hassle. A cooperative multiplayer game is always a great way to spend time with loved ones, even when distance (or weather) makes being together physically a challenge. HypeTrain Digital’s newest release, Voidtrain, thrusts you and three other cooperative partners into the boots of the crew on an interdimensional express train.

After stumbling into an all-new world with nothing more than a little trolley and seemingly endless tracks stretching through the void, players have to learn how to explore and survive. As your crew explores floating islands, you’ll be tasked with solving puzzles and combating dangerous creatures. Doing so nets valuable resources that your team can use to build up your trolley into a venerable voidtrain with multiple wagons and advanced engines.

to collect goods. When exploring the void, the player characters are tied to the train via a rope so that they can float through space picking up wood, metal, and other scraps. The void isn’t always safe, though, so keep an eye out for those pesky space sharks. If the danger gets a little too overbearing, or you just want more space shark danger to keep you on edge, Voidtrain’s game settings can be freely adjusted so that enemies do more (or less — we don’t judge) damage to you and your growing train.

Voidtrain is available on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox PC, Xbox Cloud, and supports Play Anywhere, making it suitable for handheld play with the ROG Ally X, as well. Xbox Game Pass subscribers can check out Voidtrain as part of the subscription service at no extra cost, making it even easier to convince your friends to go on an interdimensional space train adventure with you.

Who doesn’t love a good boomer shooter? Developed by David Szymanski, the retro-style first-person shooter Dusk developed a cult following when it was originally released in 2018. Set in the backwoods of rural northeastern America, Dusk forces you to fight your way through hordes of mystical cultists and supernatural forces using sickles, swords, crossbows, rifles, and more through three distinct campaign episodes.

Despite being more than seven years old, the grandfather of boomer shooters has only just made its way to Xbox. In an interview with Jez Corden, Dave Oshrey — CEO of Dusk publisher, New Blood Interactive — accredits Xbox Play Anywhere and the support of handheld consoles as a reason for pushing the classic shooter onto the Xbox ecosystem.

To celebrate the Xbox launch, a brand-new endless survival mode was introduced to the game, and it features a map that just may be recognizable to classic Halo fans, as well. Dusk is currently available on Xbox Series X|S and Xbox PC in riveting 4K with 120fps gameplay. It’s also optimized for handhelds and features Xbox Play Anywhere support.

Winter Burrow

Ah, to be a little field mouse frolicking through the snow, collecting wood and smacking at insects with sticks to turn them into little meat pies over the fire in your childhood home. Winter Burrow was not just at the top of my wishlist for this month; it was one of my most anticipated indie games for all of 2025. This cozy woodland survival game is all about a little mouse who returns from the city to his childhood burrow only to find it in disrepair.

With the brutality of winter hanging over his squeaky little head, the mouse must restore the broken down home, all while knitting warm and cozy sweaters and going on big adventures to find the mouse’s beloved Aunt who has gone missing.
