The ultimate Windows gaming gift guide: The best laptops, handhelds, mini PCs, and desktops we'd actually buy
No matter your preferred way to play, there's a perfect gaming PC standing by.
Buying the perfect gift is never easy, and in the world of PC gaming where new hardware is launching all the time, it can be particularly difficult to sort the quality devices from the ones best ignored.
That's why we put together this comprehensive gaming gift guide full of gaming PCs we've actually used ourselves and love enough to recommend to friends and family.
Whether it's a portable and powerful laptop, a monster desktop rig, a sleek gaming handheld, or a space-saving mini PC, you can shop confidently right here for your favorite gamer.
The Surface Pro 12-inch is a great holiday pick for anyone who wants one device for work, streaming and everyday browsing. Powered by Snapdragon X2 Plus, this compact 2-in-1 gives you the flexibility of a tablet with the power of a Windows laptop. The 3:2 PixelSense touchscreen gives you more room to scroll, sketch and multitask, while the built-in kickstand reclines up to 165 degrees for easy viewing, typing or note-taking. Add the optional Surface Pro 12-inch Keyboard and Slim Pen to complete the setup.
Which gaming PC makes the best gift?
The collection of PC gaming hardware I've put together here has been tested and approved by the Windows Central team. That essentially means that you can pick up any of the options and be confident that it will make a great gift.
However, to really dial things in, I can offer some additional suggestions.
Which gaming laptop is best?
The best gaming laptop for anyone who values portability over extreme power should check out the ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14. It's a 14-inch thin-and-light laptop with a beautiful 3K OLED display and NVIDIA's latest RTX mobile GPUs, delivering serious gaming chops.
For those who want something a tad larger at 16 inches, there's the Razer Blade 16 that's dripping in premium features. If you'd like to spend much less on a similar size, there's always the Alienware 16X Aurora.
Which desktop gaming PC is best?
The pre-built gaming desktop PCs we chose fall into three categories. First, there's the Acer Nitro 65 in the budget range, generally starting somewhere between $1,000 and $1,500. We found it to be stylish, powerful, and built to a high standard.
Maingear's MG-1 falls firmly in the boutique build section, with each PC carefully built by hand to your specifications (right down to the screws and cabling). If you want something that feels like it was built at home by a savvy enthusiast, this is the way to go.
Lenovo's Legion Tower 7i is sort of a mix of the two, built by a big brand name but with emphasis on ultimate power. It's expensive, but it'll be relevant for years to come.
Is there a perfect gaming handheld?
PC gaming handhelds are super popular thanks to their portability, ergonomics, and impressive performance.
The ROG Xbox Ally X is a top-tier option that we all love here at Windows Central, providing a near-perfect balance between price, power, and features.
It's worth checking in on the ROG Xbox Ally X20 limited edition that recently launched. It's pricey, but its new Nebula HDR OLED display, booming speakers, TMR joysticks, and Ryzen Z2 AI chip performance with improved cooling all feel well worth it.
The ROG Xbox Ally is also a smart choice that doesn't cost nearly as much as its Ally X sibling. It's not as powerful, either, but it does deliver the fundamentals in a quality package that many gamers will love.
MSI's Claw 8 AI+ comes with Hall Effect joysticks, Thunderbolt 4, and strong performance from an Intel Core Ultra 258V chip, pushing its price beyond the first two options.
Are mini PCs suited for gaming?
In recent years, mini PCs have improved to the point that they've become a low-cost alternative to expensive gaming laptops and desktops. They can often deliver roughly the same performance as gaming handhelds thanks to their integrated graphics chips, and they hardly take up any space.
Geekom's A9 Max lands with an AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX 470 CPU and Radeon 890M graphics, capable of running even demanding games like Cyberpunk 2077 at a smooth 60 FPS.
The Mini IT13 makes the switch to an Intel Core Ultra 7 356H CPU and Intel Arc graphics, with great potential for running demanding games.
And if your favorite gamer enjoys indie titles without such demanding requirements, the Beelink SER9 Pro is reasonably priced and built to a high standard.
