Strategy game 'Age of Wonders: Planetfall' launches on Xbox One and PC

What you need to know

  • Age of Wonders: Planetfall is a strategy game from Paradox Interactive and Triumph Studios.
  • The developer is known for the famous Overlord franchise.
  • The game runs at 4K resolution on Xbox One X but features a better frame rate option.
  • You can purchase it for $50 on Amazon.

A few months ago, Paradox Interactive — the publisher behind games like Cities: Skylines and Surviving Mars — announced Age of Wonders: Planetfall for Xbox One and other platforms. The title is a new strategy experience from Triumph Studios, the team behind critically-acclaimed games like Overlord.

In Age of Wonders: Planetfall, you start off entirely down and out. According to Triumph, the title brings turn-based empire building and tactical combat to a new setting. You emerge from the dark age of a fallen galactic empire to craft a new future for your people. While exploring planetary ruins and encountering other factions that have each evolved in their own way, you'll unravel the history of a shattered race and hopefully, learn from the mistakes of the past.

We've been testing out the game for the past week and can confirm that it features two graphical options on Xbox One X. "Favor Resolution" allows you to run the game at a higher resolution, and it seems like the frame rate is unlocked. It reaches 60 frames per second (FPS), but there are moments where it dips. "Favor Performance" lowers the resolution, but the game appears to run at a locked 60 FPS.

Paradox Interactive is known for creating amazing strategy games and bringing them to consoles. Age of Wonders: Planetfall is quite similar to Surviving Mars, but the fact that there's XCOM-like combat involved is the differentiating factor. If you're looking for a game that is challenging and requires dozens of hours to master, then be sure to give this one a go.
