Watch 30 minutes of Shadow of the Tomb Raider's two Xbox One X modes

Recently, Square Enix unveiled Shadow of the Tomb Raider, the conclusion to Lara Croft's origin story. In the game, Lara must master a deadly jungle, overcome terrifying tombs, and persevere through her darkest hour. According to the company, as she races to save the world from a Mayan apocalypse, Lara will ultimately be forged into the Tomb Raider she is destined to be.

An Italian outlet by the name of MondoXbox recently captured Shadow of the Tomb Raider footage in 4K 30 FPS and 1080p 60 FPS on Xbox One X. The team uploaded the gameplay to Dailymotion so that everyone would be able to enjoy it, especially if you're planning on getting the game on Microsoft's new console!

4K 30 FPS

The extended gameplay footage showcases 4K 30 FPS gameplay. You will probably have to select the "2160p60" option from the top right of the Dailymotion video to view it at this quality. The footage is 30 FPS despite the fact that it says "2160p60", as that is just what the recording device was capable of capturing.

Aside from exploring dank caves, the Xbox One X footage focuses on populated environments and how you can interact with the locals. Tomb Raider and Rise of the Tomb Raider were very isolated adventures with not a lot of opportunities to immerse yourself in another culture. Luckily, Shadow of the Tomb Raider fixes that and gives players what they've been asking for since the reboot launched all those years ago.

1080p 60 FPS

This clip is much shorter than the 4K footage, but it gives you a taste of the "Performance Mode". Players can toggle this setting which renders the game at 1080p 60 FPS. Again, you'll have to select "2160p60" to view the video at the highest quality. Despite the fact that the recording device can capture at 2160p 60 FPS, the gameplay is still being rendered at 1080p 60 FPS. There's a noticeable drop in the resolution when the title runs at a higher frame rate.

This video focuses on exploration and how even claustrophobic city streets feel more alive. Even if you enter a small area housing tombs, you'll notice computer-controlled characters praying or going about their daily lives. This enhances the immersion because it makes the setting more believable.

While some gamers might be disappointed that Shadow of the Tomb Raider doesn't achieve 4K 60 FPS on Xbox One X, the fact that there is a 30 FPS or 60 FPS option is great. Giving gamers the choice of how they want to experience the title seems like the right approach to development.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider is currently available for preorder at various retailers. The game should launch on Xbox One and other platforms on September 14, 2018, starting at $59.99.
