Call me a heretic, but I've enjoyed this retro-inspired shooter way more than Space Marine 2 — Here's why it's my favorite Warhammer 40,000 action game

With Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun 2 on the horizon in 2026, it's time we revisited its predecessor, Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun, to get us hyped for the sequel now that it's on offer for $10.99 at Newegg.

This was an awesome game for both old-school FPS and Warhammer 40,000 fans thanks to its retro aesthetic, rich variety of enemies to mow down, and righteously violent gunplay.

Why is Boltgun my favorite Warhammer 40,000 action game that you should as well?

Blast Daemons and traitors alike with your Bolt Shotgun. (Image credit: Focus Entertainment)

Games like Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 and Warhammer 40,000: Darktide are deservingly getting all the media and fan love for their fun gameplay and lore-accurate depictions of the Warhammer 40,000 universe.

However, they never gave me as much child-like joy as Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun did. This game was a blast from start to finish that had me grinning ear-to-ear for its unapologetically retro graphics and copious amounts of digitized violence.

The controls were tight and responsive, the gunplay was a delight as it offered a large variety of satisfying weapons of mass destruction to use, and it had replay value in the form of secret collectibles to find in every level.

Not to mention it had a tough but satisfying-to-conquer difficulty curve, as this game featured a diverse rogue's gallery of Daemons and traitorous Chaos forces to slay that will mow you down if you're not constantly aggressive and on the move.

So, if you grew up on classic first-person shooters like the original Doom, Quake, Duke Nukem, and wanted a FPS that combined their fast-paced gameplay with the grim-dark setting of the 41st millennium, then look no further than Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun.

You can get it right now for 50% of its original $21.99 MSRP at Newegg for $10.99, making this perfect to jump into this series before Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun 2 arrives in 2026.

Which, by the way, is looking even crazier than the first game as, in addition to a Space Marine, you now get to play as a Sister of Battle and burn every heretic to the ground with Bolters, Flamers, and Meltas.
