Why I'm incredibly excited for WH40K: Rogue Trader's next expansion — and why you should be too, whether you're a Warhammer 40,000 or CRPG fan

Warhammer Skulls 2026 has come and gone, and it has brought a massive tidal wave of exciting Warhammer videogame news, including brand new games, DLC updates for existing titles, and an upcoming crossover with Helldivers 2.

One of my favorite announcements from the event is a trailer for Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader's upcoming 3rd DLC expansion, "The Infinite Museion", which revealed that it will drop on PC, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch 2 on June 11, 2026.

However, Owlcat Games thought that wasn't enough fuel to get fans hyped up. So, the developers have finally given us a proper look at the new Augmentation system (via the game's Steam page) that will be included in the DLC expansion.

I was already looking forward to returning to Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader to experience this DLC with its intriguing premise, where we raid the museum of Trazyn the Infinite (a popular character from Warhammer 40,000 lore) and recruit the new enigmatic Tech-Priest companion, Eogunn Februs.

However, this new Augmentation system has sent my anticipation levels for this DLC expansion through the roof as it's looking to transform the entire game as we know it, and I can't wait to try it out.

What is this new Augmentation system?

Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader's new augmentation system is a new gameplay mechanic that will allow the player to graft cybernetic implants into their bodies or replace entire limbs with robotic ones.

The DLC expansion will introduce over 100 cybernetic augments throughout the whole game, with one offering incredibly powerful passive and active abilities that will reshape how you dispatch enemies in turn-based battles.

These abilities can range from teleporting long distances to attacking enemies from behind or buffing a character's attack or defense stats.

Each character will have 6 six slots available for cybernetic augmentation by default (two slots for the head, one for the Torso, two for the hands, and one for the legs). However, characters with the Forge World or Adeptus Mechanicus backgrounds can have more augment slots as befitting their techno nature.

To top it off, each character will have an extra "Galvanization" slot, which can be used to overclock one of your equipped augments to boost its powers further for a turn during battle, at the cost of suffering a penalty afterward.

The price of becoming one with machines

After hearing this, you'd probably think that this system is overpowered as heck. However, there are drawbacks to the Augmentation system to preserve gameplay balance.

For example, some characters are incompatible with this system due to personal reasons, like Cassia refusing to be touched, Yrilet, and Marazhai, or because of their advanced biology, like Ulfar the Space Marine. Plus, some augments are Conviction-locked, meaning Dogmatic-aligned characters will refuse to use Heretical-aligned augments, and vice-versa.

Additionally, every augment comes with a negative passive trait to balance out its positive trait, like making your character suffer status effects or reducing certain stats. Also, the more cybernetic augmentations you receive, the more susceptible you will be to electric and EMP damage.

I can't wait to spend hundreds of hours converting my retinue into cyborg abominations

Overall, this Augmentation system sounds absolutely insane. It can potentially open tons of new character-build theory crafting options for your party and improve Rogue Trader's already gargantuan amount of replay value further.

Not to mention, this Augmentation system will give our characters new cosmetic appearances that will alter their bodies with new cybernetic limbs that have sleek or disturbing designs, depending on their alignment.

I've loved Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader's DLC expansions like Void Shadows and Lex Imperialis for introducing hundreds of hours' worth of gameplay content that changes the entire game from the ground up, and judging from this Augmentation system, The Infinite Museion expansion will certainly be no different.

I know for sure that the new content will definitely keep me busy until Owlcat Games' next Warhammer 40,000 CRPG, Warhammer 40,000: Dark Heresy, eventually releases in the future.

If you love Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader, then this DLC expansion is a must-wishlist entry. If you've never played Warhammer games before but enjoy CRPGs with a grim-dark setting and story, then this DLC expansion that will launch on June 11, 2026, will be the perfect time to jump in.

If you need further convincing, check out my former colleague, Samuel Tolbert's 4-Star review of Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader, where he proclaimed, "Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader is a fun RPG with stellar writing that truly captures the dark future of eternal war. Choices and options aplenty never detract from or feel ill-suited to the setting, and a clever layout makes this a solid entry point for any Warhammer newcomers."
