Microsoft's Xbox PC app is getting a nifty new feature — it's in preview testing now for Xbox Insiders

Gamers that use the Xbox PC app to play games on Windows have a new feature to look forward to. Announced by Microsoft today, it's coming to the app soon, and is currently available for Xbox Insiders to test in preview ahead of its full release.

That feature is postgame recaps, which pulls up an overview of notable moments from a gaming session after you close the game you were playing. Some of the highlights the recaps show include recorded Xbox Game Bar screenshots and clips, achievement completions, and "relevant in‑game events" you engaged with.

Notably, these recaps "are designed to show up only when they’re useful," so don't expect to see one every time you play a game. Microsoft says you'll mainly see them any time you capture a screenshot or video or complete an achievement, though you're also likely to get a recap after your first time playing a game.

Recaps may also show some recommendations for games similar to the one you're playing, and will direct you to the full Xbox PC app if you'd like to share your recap with your friends. In the app, you can also turn off parts of postgame recaps you don't want to see in the Settings > App > Postgame recaps menu.

With postgame recaps enabled, the Xbox app will run in the background on the system tray, as that's required in order for the program to display a recap when you end a gaming session. Note that Microsoft has "optimized this to minimize memory and performance impact," and if you fully disable postgame recaps, this won't occur.

To test the postgame recaps feature ahead of its full launch, you'll need to join the Xbox Insider Program. Doing so is free, and is done by signing up within the Xbox Insider Hub app you can find on the Microsoft Store. Overall, these new postgame recaps are hardly a huge addition to the Xbox experience on PC, but I do like them; there have been times where I record something to show friends during a particularly long gaming session but forget about it by the time I'm done, so these will remind me of my captures in those scenarios.

I also appreciate that Microsoft has done what it can to make the Xbox app as lightweight as it can while it runs in the background, and like that you can customize what the recaps show specifically, too. All in all, they're pretty nifty, and I expect I'll get good use out of them myself since I'm an avid PC gamer and use Game Bar and the Xbox app frequently.

Notably, this preview is one of the Xbox Insider Program's first major tests in 2026. Last month, Microsoft also began testing a revamped Xbox Cloud Gaming user interface with Xbox Insiders, with the new design closely emulating the Xbox Dashboard experience you'd get with a console.
