HTC HD2 headed for T-Mobile U.S. (probably in March)

We're calling it folks: we now believe T-Mobile is the U.S. destination for the famous HTC HD2 (watch our hands-on here).  Sorry to the other carriers, thanks for playing. We're also hearing a tentative release window of March.

How do we know?  One of our trusty ninjas hooked us up with the still-in-testing ROM files for said device.

Having dumped the .nbh file ourselves, we can verify that indeed this sucker is a T-Mobile HD2 ROM (see below screen shot).  And no, we will not share this, so don't bother askin'.

Here are some stats:

  • Leo ROM 2.01 (big jump from v1.61 leak)
  • WM6.5 build 21869
  • Opera 9.7.0.35627
  • OzIM_US_1.0.5.1.139
  • Teeter 2.0 (ooh, a new version)
  • TMOUS_Manila_Core 2.5.1921401

Of course that's just a drop in the bucket from the External Packages folder, but you get the drift.

So T-Mobilers, a huge congrats.  And to AT&T, Verizon and Sprint, as far as we know, curses to you.

  • Hmmm, if T-Mobile can bring my phone # over I am in
  • agreed
  • I don't see that happening. Just in case any such thing happens, they will be having separate plans for it. just my 2 cents.
  • I am an At&t customer at the moment, and with my contract soon ending I'm am definitely going to go with whoever gets that phone. It really doesn't matter to me.
  • the rom is a bit odd.. loads of new stuff in there.. but the drivers and core is much older than the 161 rom.. New manila tab is intriguing.. Documents browser tab :D
  • Yeah, I'm gonna build some of this into my own ROM, lol. Awesome. MalROM: Extreme edition.
  • What happened to MalWare?
  • lol, I gotta work on some graphic presentation for that and since I have no graphic skillz...gonna be awhile
  • What has T-Mo's success been at getting phones to market on time? Will I have to wait until next September?
  • First in U.S. to launch Touch Pro 2--I'd say pretty good.
  • Maybe I'm in denial, but I just don't buy it. Just because they are testing ROMs on TMO doesn't mean its exclusive nor going to be released.
  • Well, T-Mo was *always* rumored to be the one to get it, so it isn't really a surprise. As far as testing/no guarantee to release, I mean it's always a possibility but I am not aware of an HTC device having that happen. In fact, the last I remember was Verizon and the 800w a few years back. To clarify: currently no other carriers appear to be "testing" it, only T-Mo. I'm 98% confident that T-Mo is getting this.
  • So now word on a CDMA version, huh? Not like Big Red was going to carry it anyway, but I thought Sprint would have it...oh well. Like you said Mal, T-MO was the first to carry the TP2 on US soil, so what am doing on Sprint then? Oh yeah, the prices!
  • T-Mo current prices are better than Sprint prices.
  • Not while on SERO plus a $5/month discount.
  • What? Please provide proof.
  • T-Mobile is about $10-20 cheaper a month but with Sprint has better coverage in most places (especially for data). But with Sprint Any Mobile for plans with data, a lot of people can get away with cheaper plans but actually get more minutes than on comparable T-Mobile plans.
  • Uhhhh, T-Mobile prices are NOT better than Sprint. Unlimited everything, including Navigation, text, e-mail, data, etc.. $99.00/Month.
  • I have SPRINT everything data family plan and it is 129.00 a month, I am switching to T mobile for the phones and the 119.00 a month everything plan. I realize that sprint has better coverage, but they also have HORRIBLE customer service, they outsource to India.
  • Nope. Trust me, being on Sprint, I would have rather been reporting something else today! But if I hear something,...you'll find out. Right now though, I'm hearing nothing about CDMA :-/
  • As long as I can get an unlocked version, I am sold!
    M
  • Nope. Unlocked 1700 band works no where else!
  • I would rather have the Omnia Pro on T-Mo USA.
  • Good to know.
I would never buy a phone on Verizon's or AT&T's network... so pricey. T-Mo and Sprint is the way to go.
  • HTC HD 2 will be old news come March, I am almost guaranteeing it will be delayed.
  • Ok, Thanx, don't share, it's ur right, but, surely, it will be leaked soon, by others more cooperative communities
  • I'm not sharing *not* because I don't want others to have the ROM but because *I don't want to burn my source*, ya dig? I was instructed specifically to *not* share it Releasing the *exact* ROM file and file name is a big fingerprint when test ROMs are floating around and if you want more future scoops, screwing over your source(s) is not the way to go. Think before you post, will ya? I was looking into releasing just the Manila files but sheesh...
  • Tmo is great but i wish sprint would jump on this. This is the phone ive been wanting since the TOUCH HD. Damn sprint jump on the freakin band wagon
  • The HD2 is the phone you've been waiting for since the HD? How odd.
  • This is setting the HD2 up to fail. By March, WM7 rumors will be swirling, and I'm sure the HTC 2nd half of 2010 roadmap will already have leaked. And then add T-Mobile, which people don't have particularly fond feelings for. [Note: I don't care about your good anecdotal experiences with T-Mobile. The bottom line is that T-Mobile is a GSM network in the U.S., which means its network is generally worse than CDMA, and it's hemorrhaging customers. But I'm happy you like T-Mo. Congrats.] The situation is definitely an improvement over the HD, which was never released in the US. Now it's just released in the US, but too late. Hopefully HTC won't look at the "failure" of the HD2 and think it confirms US consumers' disinterest in high end smart phones. Because if HTC launches the HD3 in the U.S. at the same time it does in Europe (and not on T-Mo), it will be a success.
  • WOW, you must really be clueless. Windows 7 has been delayed until the end of 2010 for release and CDMA for Verizon will be out the door when they switch to LTE in 2011 which is GSM. Also T-mobile will have HSPA+ buy mid 2010 and full 3g coverage at half the price AT&T and Verizon is charging and bending people over.
  • Full 3G coverage?
They are spotty at best with 2G and a few cities with 3G and you dream they will have full 3G and HSPA+ in the next 6 months?
    You are kidding, right?
  • Their spotty right now but they are working on expanding to full coverage. True they waited to long on that issue but you also can't do it overnight. We will see who's laughing in mid 2010.
  • I've had T-Mobile for years and have never had reception issues. They are making moves to improve on their 2G and 3G coverage areas AND they have the best prices and customer service from my experience. Sounds like you're just upset that T-Mobile is most likely getting such a great device. HI HATER!!!
  • I think you meant that for pinguino1 . I've been with T-Mobile for over 8 yrs and love it. I pay $74.98/month for unlimited everything. I'll never pay the BS prices Verizon and AT&T are charging. My brother is on AT&T and always gets a busy network and dropped calls and pays over $100.00/month. He left Verizon and was paying $120.00/month with them and their service plans/agreements sucks.
    T-Mobile ROCKS !
  • LOL, this almost isn't worth responding to. I'll just say that buying a phone is a 2 year commitment, and people delay buying phones when they think something better is quickly approaching. That should address everything here.
  • On T-Mobile it's not a 2 yr commitment anymore. You have a choice to subsidize the phone or not. You don't have to have a 2 yr contract to get a new phone like the other carriers screw you on then charge you way over $100/month on limited minutes/text/Data. Man people on AT&T and Verizon must love being bent over on their monthly service bills. And Verizon's new $350.00 ETF fees if you don't complete the 2yr agreement,yea-right sign me up !
  • So you're the kind of guy who would buy a phone for full price and then consider buying another phone in less than a year, again for full price? Because it's going to be less than a year before WM7 is out, along with the HD3 and all the other third generation HTC devices. When people (i.e. everyone but you, apparently) fronts significant money to buy a phone (and all signs point to the HD2 being the most expensive phone to ever grace the U.S. market), you don't just chuck it after a couple of months. I'm on Sprint, by the way, with a 20% discount on service. I pay $55/month for 450 minutes, unlimited data, texts, and navigation. I don't feel bent over in the slightest; I actually feel pretty upright.
  • No Jackass, i have more than one phone in my family. I will need a new phone soon and don't want to wait until WM7 to come out at the end of 2010. And the HD3 will be alot longer in release hear in the USA than you think. Do you really think they will release the HD2 in march than turn around and release a HD3 months later,Not.
It won't be less than a year for WM7 jackass, they already stated the earliest release for WM7 will be the end of 2010,Q4.
And your so called HD3 is'nt even talked about for the U.S.A. They can't even get the HD2 released until march.
And by the way, your still getting burnt on your plan for only getting 450 minutes a month unless all you do is text and surf. Some people on this earth still use the
    phone for what it's for,talk.
  • Jeez, keep to the topic, mind your words...we can understand without all the name calling.
  • This is awesome, I was going to upgrade my phone to Mytouch 3G, I guess I will wait. T-Mobile, you rock!
  • This is ridiculous and stupid!!!
My T-Mo friends in NEW YORK complain of spotty reception.
How many expensive HD2 they can sell to a bunch of T-Mo texting teen agers?
HTC must be nuts missing the 70 Million At&T users with the best FLAGSHIP device EVER!!!
  • Actually, these texting teenagers you speak of will probably beg their parents for it just so they can have a device that is better than their friends' iphones. Stop being jealous.
  • actually, texting teenagers want blackberries, like their parents....
  • I agree that TMO as the only carrier is crazy. But, you must realize that AT&T is the trigger puller in this equation, not HTC. HTC could have made the Touch HD work on AT&T or TMO in US. Simply changing the radio to the quad-band US friendly (which is NOT what the rest of the GSM world uses... TMO is 1700/2100, but not the 1700 used in Europe, just a little off. AT&T is 850/1900. Not Europe or APAC compatible either.) If AT&T signed up with HTC for the HD2, they would ship it in a heartbeat. AT&T does NOT want to challenge their iPhone exclusivity. When that ends (if it ends), I bet the market opens a great deal. I'm a WinMo fan, but gotta admit Apple did a great job and locking up AT&T was a good play.
  • i totally agree with you. when iphone exclusivity ends, att will have incentive to carry other cooler phones - an that will be good for android. and possibly also good for windows -- as by then win7may be available. 2011 is going to be very interesting. 2010 is going to be much like 2009.
  • THIS IS A JOKE WHY TMOBILE THEY ARE WORST SERVICE MEANING YOU CAN'T EVEN GET A SIGNAL ANYWHERE YOU GO. THEY HAVE MOST DROP CALLS. THEY SHOULD HAVE GOTTEN SPRINT HAS THEY ALWAYS CARRY MANY HTC PHONES. AGAIN WHAT A TOTAL WASTE PICKING TMOBILE. THAT'S OK I WILL GET A UNLOCK PHONE HAS I DONT REALLY WANT HAVE TMOBILE SERVICE.
  • WHAT I CAN"T HEAR YOUR RANT ! Your yelling so loud when you type your hurting my ears.
  • I have Verizon BB from work and ATT (Acer S200) for my personal use. Acer S200 is not very good phone but it has lot better coverage than Verizon. T-mobile coverage doesn't mater because where ever they don't have coverage, the phone automatically picks ATT. I bought my first cell phone in 1997, Verizon is by far the shitiest service I ever had. I had more dropped calls on Verizon in one year than I had on ATT, T-mobile, Bell south in 12 years. What planet you people live on. Verizon 3G never clocks more than 600K, ATT and T-mobile will clock more than 1.1 M. My wife's My touch clocked more than 4 M download recently on T-mobile. As far as coverage, yes Verizon has more coverage but does 48K in Edge vs 132K on Version 3g matters in rural area? Nope. In any major city ATT (2006 and up) and T-Mobile (2009- now) rocks. Verizon sucks. Go search internet for 3G bench marks.
  • You're silly. There are tons of people who have the same experience as you in reverse including myself. I live in a major city (LA) and Verizon/Sprint is significantly better in reception and data speeds than AT&T/T-mobile. When it comes down to it, the coverage you get means squat to me and vice versa.
  • Verizon would of been better...
  • Something some of you need reminded (or learn) about is that a GSM phone will NOT work on cdma networks like Sprint and Verizon. The only way a GSM phone like the TP HD2 and the iPhone will work is if the cdma carriers change their network (would take a long time and quite a bit of money) or the manufacturers (htc and apple) make a cdma version of the phone. I can see apple making a cdma of the iPhone if the exclusivity ends with ATT, that is a huge market gain with Verizon and Sprint. HTC could use that cash cow as well.
  • So Sprint and Verizon changed their networks so they could get the TP2? Because from what I can tell, the TP2 was a GSM device in Europe and but in the U.S. is on all networks, including Sprint and Verizon. I'm on Sprint, have a TP2, and am pretty sure I'm on a CDMA network. You, sir, are an idiot.
  • To clarify, you're an idiot because you think that people's desires to see the HD2 on a CDMA network mean that they think the T-Mobile U.S. HD2 would work on a CDMA network. The comments are simply wishes that HTC decided to make a CDMA HD2, just like they made a T-Mo U.S. compatible HD2. For an analogy, tons of people when hearing about the HD2 would comment "if only it came with Android." You would take that to mean that these commenters believed that the HD2 would run Android?
  • The Rom is availalble here:
    http://www.mobiletechworld.com/2009/12/19/htc-hd2-2-01-t-mobile-us-rom-l...
  • T-Mobile is horrendous and mediocre, shame for this good of a phone to be on a network that cant take advantage of it
  • Still beats everyone else at least :)
  • I am happy for you, i got mine a week ago and i love it more every day, this Leo is the best mobile i ever had, thx to Sense to make winmo look great, it is so fully customisable and so fast, and i am not speaking about speed, a real rocket and what a very good looking thing ! I had a lot of mobile, tired of waiting for the chimeric Pr
  • Mhy first reaction was I was going to switch to T-Mobile as soon as they get it. When they got the TP2 first I thought the same thing but waited for Sprint to get theirs. Luckly I did and got a better looking TP2 on a faster network. I think I'm going to do the same thing here and hopefully Sprint gets it.
  • Considering I am getting on avg 5000kbps downloads, I'm glad I got mine on T-Mobile

  • http://www.mediabistro.com/mobilecontenttoday/tmobile/tough_2009_for_tmo... This really bodes well for T-Mobile. Hey, if their network cannot handle what they already have, how is it going to handle an influx of data hungry devices? And, another reason AT&T didn't get the HD2 is due to the fact that their network is being overloaded by iPhone users. So, they couldn't possibly release another data hungry device. Verizon's service continues to be the best, and for me, that is most important.
  • I'm with T-Mobile and would love to buy this baby!! only if Tmobile don't F!@#k up the design like they did on the Touch Pro 2.
  • Will the T-Mobile HTC HD2 have different hardware for their 3G service? If I buy the HD2 now will it work on T-Mobile US 3G?
  • Mail Service: US Postal Service Priority Mail
  • I'm switching to Tmobile and getting this!!! Looks like a great phone personally, but what droid isn't?
  • thanks its a nice post..
  • What a very nice phone..I wish I can buy one for myself :)
    Nice posy! Thanks
  • Ok, I'm confused. Did T-Mobile ever release this phone? I haven't been able to find it. Someone please clarify!

  • Is any one know that Sprint in Canada will get this phone?
Or is any of the Canadian money making mobile companies will get them soon?
  • I'm am definitely going to go with whoever gets that phone. It really doesn't matter to me.
  • ATT is getting no love. Nokia's n900 and all the androids.
    I wonder why ATT..?
  • I agree with Dolores. Show Boat in its first act had all the features of integration that are claimed as original in Oklahoma.
