In my opinion, the Surface Pro (1st Gen) for $499 is the best option. I bought one when BB had it for sale last week. Now my dad wants one too. Waiting for the price to drop again. The active digitizer on that thing is AWESOME! Otherwise, I hear that Dell has fixed their digitizer now for the Venue Pro 8

Active digitizers are more expensive for larger screens, it is certainly harder to do than an 8inch. If it did have one though, it'd be a great buy even at 399. (consider the Dell VP11). That said I agree with the guy above me. I got a surface pro for that price and I'm liking it. Battery life is what you'd expect, but I save enough money to get a SP3 when they come out :)

I picked up the first Gen surface pro on Monday on eBay through Microsoft store. The ms store had it advertised for higher, but still sold it at $499 through eBay.

True but its a great bargain nevertheless considering it has a 10" full hd+ display and the highest end Atom processor.  The one negative and probably the reason it hadn't sold much before (besides HP's lack of promotion) is that I don't think HP developed any accessories for this.

actually the HP site lists a charging stand and a case (that claims to provide access to all ports & buttons). that's not a lot but some essentials.

I had ordered one when they first came out, but canceled due to the lowly 32gb. Ordered a Dell Venue 8Pro with 64gb, great little tablet, I didn't foresee how convenient the size was for casual usage.

Cool, I have a Thinkpad 8 128gb ordered. I'm really looking forward to it and the size. Just waiting for it to be shipped.... I have had it ordered since January 29th.

We got one for my dad for Christmas. It's a great tablet, and I set it up for him to use as a desktop with a monitor, keyboard, and mouse. It's pretty quick, too. It just doesn't have much aftermarket support, and there are basically no professional reviews for it. It's definitely one of the best values in tablets.

There was a $50 off deal just after it was released at Office Depot, making it $350. But I could find zero reviews. And to this day, still having a hard time find a real solid review on this device. It's almost like there is a reason nobody is getting it and that even at $300, there isn't much love for it.

A real digitizer and better aftermarket support for keyboards/cases/etc might help. Personally I do not like the 16:9 ratio that most tablets have these days, so the HP at 16:10 is slightly better, Personally, the size/ratio ( moreso than software ) of my iPad 3 is a great format, IMO.

Yeah, we got it at Office Depot. There are at least a decent number of positive consumer reviews on Office Depot's site and on Amazon. I personally prefer the wider format since it's better for video, but in the end it doesn't really matter because I don't own a tablet myself.

does it charge via the micro USB, like a phone & other tablets? some pictures look more like a typical laptop charge plug, which would be a bummer.

Unfortunately it's not a micro USB plug, it is more like the power plug you'd find on something like a wireless router or computer speakers, etc.

Personally, I am waiting for the ThinkPad 8 to come out in a 10 inch option, but this does seem like a good deal for those who desire these particular features.

I hope you are wrong, but you make a decent case.  Its been over a year since they released a 10 inch tablet, and with the reviews coming in so strong on the ThinkPad 8 it would behoove them to bump that up to a 10 for those in such a market.  I would be on it immediately if it came out.

Wait I'm wrong lol, they do make a 1080p miix 2 10" but it still has the z3740, not the z3770. But I read that the graphics performance is the same for the two. And it comes with a keyboard like the t100.

Yep, they have some 10 inch models, but I want one like the ThinkPad 8 rather than the Miix.

Thanks!

This is not a very good tablet, period. Has a LOT of stability issues, and how do I know? Former employee at MS stores. Camera app crashes all the time, constant BSODs, probably due to faulty HP drivers. Build quality also feels meh. I'd personally stay away.

I've seen similar comments on other forums. Folks even using Dell drivers on the 5600?? Thanks for the advice.

I have had one since December and I'm a heavy user. I haven't had any issues with it. Build quality is fine for a $300 10" tablet.

My only complaints are that they placed the power and USB ports on the bottom which makes it' awkward when using with a stand. I also wish the USB port was standard size instead of the micro where you must use an adapter.

For 300$ this is a steal. Got this tablet a couple of days ago and it is amazing. Warning though, out of the box, display looks kind of crappy. Removeing all the constraints on brightness, looks so cool. Excellent. Only the metro ie browser is good with this tablet. buttery scrolling, keyboard auto popup. I am a firefox user, but on tablet pages lag, and keyboard dows not auto popup. amazing tablet
