Hytale modders have recreated Call of Duty inside the Minecraft-like sandbox game a month after it launched on PC — and yes, a "Zombies" mode is in the works

Hytale is a newly released early access title that shares a visual style with Minecraft and some familiar mechanics, while still feeling mechanically distinct rather than a direct copy of the long-running Xbox IP.

We have already seen the Hytale community push the game in unexpected directions, from running Doom inside Hytale to experimenting with early Minecraft and Hytale crossplay.

Hytale is continuing to evolve, and while Call of Duty is not in its strongest moment right now, that has not stopped modders from recreating its gameplay inside Hytale, including maps like Hijacked and more from Black Ops 2.

This server-side mod effectively turns Hytale into a first-person shooter, aiming to capture the familiar Call of Duty feel through fast-paced deathmatch matches. It includes features like a working kill feed and stat tracking for kills and deaths, helping it feel closer to a traditional multiplayer shooter.

While the mod is still in early development, it is not the only Call of Duty-inspired experience appearing in Hytale. A Zombies-style mod is also taking shape, giving players a wave-based survival mode within the game.

These are the kinds of experiences Minecraft has supported for years, but seeing them emerge in Hytale so quickly is great to see. With the game still in early access for less than a month, it highlights just how impressive its foundations already are. It’s part of the reason I myself purchased the game — that, and to reserve my username.

Hytale is currently only available on PC and is in early access, but the game is available across Windows, Linux, and Mac, with the developers confirming that support for Steam Deck is planned in the future, with the lack of controller support being the biggest limitation for the game right now for handhelds.
