You can now use Storage sense to automatically get rid of junk files, and in this guide, we'll show you the steps to set up the feature on Windows 10.

On Windows 10, when your computer begins to run out of space, typically, you manually empty the recycle bin and delete temporary files to free up storage space using different tools, such as the built-in Disk Cleanup utility.

Although for many people using Disk Cleanup or another third-party tool may be a straightforward process, it's not an intuitive task for everyone. Starting with the Creators Update, Windows 10 introduces Storage sense, a new feature that automatically monitors and free up storage space on your computer.

Storage sense is disabled by default, but once enabled, it'll proactively delete certain temporary files, such as those created by apps, and files that have been moved to the recycle bin for more than 30 days.

In this Windows 10 guide, we'll walk you through the steps to enable and configure Storage Sense on your device running the Creators Update to make room to store more important files.

How to enable Storage sense on Windows 10

To enable Storage sense on Windows 10, do the following:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Click on System.
  3. Click on Storage.
  4. Turn on the Storage sense toggle switch.

Once you completed the steps, Windows 10 will automatically delete junk files from your PC, including some temporary files and items in the recycle bin older than 30 days.

While it may be obvious, if you need to free up space immediately, and it happens that one of the biggest files has been in the recycle bin less than 30 days, you'll need to delete it manually.

Additionally, Storage sense only removes certain files. Other temporary items, such as a previous version of Windows 10, installation files, and Windows Update logs are things that you'll need to delete manually using the Disk Cleanup tool.

How to configure Storage sense on Windows 10

To select which items Storage sense should remove automatically, do the following:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Click on System.
  3. Click on Storage.
  4. Click the Change how we free up space link.

  5. Select which items you want to delete from your computer:

    • Delete temporary files that my apps aren't using.
    • Delete files that have been in the recycle bin for over 30 days.

Storage sense also includes an option to junk files on-demand if you're running low on space. Just click the Clean now button, and wait for the process to complete.
