Microsoft officially announces Windows 10 Mobile over-the-air update has begun

Microsoft has announced that the long-awaited Windows 10 Mobile over-the-air update for some older Lumia phones with Windows Phone 8.1 has officially started its rollout.

The specific build that those users are getting is Windows 10 Mobile 10586.164, which has been previously released for members of the Insider program along with some current Windows 10 Mobile devices like the Lumia 950. In a blog post, Microsoft stated:

"Consistent with our approach to the Windows 10 PC upgrade, we are focused on delivering a high quality experience for our customers. The Windows 10 Upgrade Advisor app can be downloaded from the Windows Store to see if the upgrade is available for your device."This list includes a limited set of Windows Phone 8.1 devices and does not include some devices that are currently running Windows 10 Mobile in the Windows 10 Mobile Insider program. As Windows 10 delivers significant new innovations, many older devices are not able to successfully upgrade without an impact on the customer experience. Our goal is to only offer the Windows 10 upgrade to devices that we are confident can continue to deliver a good customer experience.

Again, your specific Windows Phone device may or may not be able to download the Windows 10 Mobile update, so download and check the Upgrade Advisor app to see if it is available:

  • Yes!!!! :)
  • Finally... :D
  • Finally! It has been so long wait.
  • Ahahahah and now all the people that didn't want to download the update via an app called windows insider, will download the update via an app called Upgrade Advisor and be happy. The irony :D
  • Lol.. They didn't listen to us when we told them to go get W10M using Insider app.. They wanted official update.. Here they are installing another App to get build 10586.164 ... Funny
  • I really hope .164 is not the build going out to phones. If it is, people are not going to be happy.
  • Well they will get the latest build tested by insiders, that's the point of the insider program. Would you like a non tested build?
  • 14283 is a tested build. And it sounds like it runs better than .164. .164 is still buggy as ****. Text flickers still when listening to music. MS apps crash too often. Tiles are blank when returning to start screen or opening folders. Cortana refuses to work sometimes. Edge is a mess. If they are releasing .164 to the public, MS is killing Windows Phone. People are going to be pissed. Going from a the best OS I've used 8.1.1 to .164, which is like using and old Android phone.
  • Don't what phone you have but my 640 runs .164 with none of the problems that you have.
  • - That's what she said... right before she had me roll her phone back to 8.1
  • Yeah, starting to think .164 has been a step backward on my L925 from the previous build. Apps crash more than before, mobile hotspot no longer stable. Sigh.
  • the point is that it makes The OS official, no more rolling back to 8.1
  • A point you invented :)
  • I haven't rolled back for a looong time
  • That app is just to check that the update is available for ur mobile are not. Not to download from it.
  • The two apps work in the same way :)
  • No they don't. So much for getting on your high horse.
  • You open the app, unlock the w10 update and then you go to settings :) Same thing.
  • Orrr you just go to Windows Update. Its not a requirement. Your point is moot.
  • "The Windows 10 Upgrade Advisor app can be downloaded from the Windows Store to see if the upgrade is available for your device." No where the article implies that we need the app to get the update.
  • The insider program is for testing releases though... It would make sense for people who wouldn't want to enroll their phones to a test-branch to wait for the official update. Sent from my Windows 10 PC.
  • Can we freshly install W10M like W10? i.e. Via any PC app or anything else. Using L520
  • Install and do a hard reset without restoring any backups.
  • I suggest you hard reset BEFORE the upgrade to Win 10 Mobile. That is the cleanest way to install a frresh OS
  • The difference here is that this is a RELEASE. Not a beta.
  • Yeeeeeppeeeeeeeee its here
    Finally ;!!!!!!!!!
    Waited soooooo looooooong
  • Yawn. I've got a AT&T 1520 and have been on the TP slow ring all along so I already have the .164 update so for once I am good and don't need to update. YaY for me....heh
  • I thing Lumia 1320,1020,920,820 which are having 1gb ram is still not eligible for windows 10 mobile
Actually I am not a windows phone fan, I'm a Nokia fan
I'm not going to buy a Microsoft phone to get windows 10
    Switching to android
  • Windows 10 : Coming Soon The Series has finally met its final episode.
  • Now that just leaves a coming soon on Cortana, Facebook, and most importantly Outlook
  • Just waiting for the Season 2
  • You think? Season 2 is coming soooooon with Restone ;)
  • Whooaaa.. Hold on guys. Read carefully, some older devices running 8.1 WON'T get official Windows 10 update at all, and W10 Insiders with unsupported devices will get updates only from 1586 branch, and will -at some point- become unsupported. It's either: stay on unsupported build or roll-back to 8.1.
  • Most of the unsupported phones are four years old... And 8.1 will not be supported either. Sent from my Windows 10 PC.
  •   My L635 is a little over a year old.
  • Yours yes, but the phone was launched in june 2014 Posted from Windows Central windows 10 App On my Lumia 930
  • So for those of us on Verizon, MS won't release a phone that works on CDMA and they won't allow existing phones like the 928 to be officially upgraded.  We're screwed.  (Changing to ATT is out of the question and I'd happily buy a Win 10 phone with decent specs if someone would release one).  And my 928 runs Win 10 insider preview just fine.
  • Hey guys, upgrade advisor says thar update is available for my phonw but when i check for updates, there is nothing. Wtf?
  • Give it a few minutes. Sent from my Windows 10 PC.
  • been about 30 mins of me pushing check for updates after update advisor telling me there is an update :/ blu win hd x150q
  • It is a staggered rollout, so it will probably arrive sooner rather than later.
  • Consider yourself lucky. The store won't let me install the advisor app on my 640.
  • What's the size of update?
And how much free memory is required? Coz my 730 phone memory only has 2GB free remaining is system memory...
  • 1.5 gb is required.
  • Wtf seriously......bur not for 512ram i think
  • Yeah
  • Wohoooo
  • So happy for Microsoft!!! :)
  • Finally but when, in Nigeria
  • Download upgrade advisor app then only your device will get the update if it is eligible.
  • App is not showing in store in Lumia 640
  • u wont find it directly in the store.. search as update advisor in google nd go to 1st seach winbeta.. in the it is shown as update advisor click on it.. it will head u to upgrade advisor app in th store..
  • Thats nice of MS to make it easy to find. Why on Earth is it not in the store when searching?
  • Because its microsoft
  • Because they hate you.  And me, and everyone else too.
  • you mean Bing, right? :P
  • Check out "Upgrade Advisor" for Windows Phone http://www.windowsphone.com/s?appid=fbe47e4f-7769-4103-910e-dca8c43e0b07
  • Is it only on 8 or 10 as well? I cant find it on either Store
  • My body is ready.
  • Umm what about your device? It's that ready Posted from Windows Central for Windows 10
  • My device is tell in me noooo but my body...my bodyyyyyy's tell in me yeeee-hes!
  • i laughed so hard at this...
  • Waaaahhh
  • Yay!!
  • Finally!
  • finally :)
  • When in India????
  • Lol. Same Question.. And Which Devices are included?
  • Not yet available for Lumia 640. Just checked.
  • Update will get through upgrade advisor app like it was in Windows 10 for pc
  • Yup got it now. Downloading. Interesting to note that Upgrade Advisor was not listed in store when searched. But can be downloaded through links.
  • Can you post the link for Upgrade Advisor app in India. I have searched for the app in store and couldn't find it on my L535.
  • Just search for upgrade advisor for mobile and you can get it. There is no separate link for India.
Even if posted here it is difficult to copy it.
  • Its available on my 640, India. Instal upgrade advisor and you will also get it
  • Phones and devices that can upgrade to Windows 10: Lumia 1520, 930, 640, 640XL, 730, 735, 830, 532, 535, 540, 635 1GB, 636 1GB, 638 1GB, 430, 435, BLU Win HD w510u, BLU Win HD LTE x150q, MCJ Madosma Q501
  • 435 is there , this is great news.
  • Download upgrade advisor app.
  • I try to download it but it says I must have Windows 10, lol
  • Same here (Lumia 830, CV IT).
  • I swear, that question has to become a new meme for Windows Central. Almost every article has someone asking that exact same question with the exact same wording.
  • That's coz Microsoft ignores the Indian audience when releasing new products or services even though there is huge potential
  • Just because a US company releases patches on their home turf first does not equate to being 'ignored'...
  • Especially with those: "?????", cause one question mark is too mainstream.
Yea, as well as sometimes they spell it "wen", and you're like: "wen zis stop?????"
  • Yeah I'm seeing so many parodies of it now. "When in Malaysia", "Wen on Mars????", etc lol. Windows Central, this needs to be a new meme t-shirt that you guys make every now and then like the "Seems faster" shirts. We need "Wen in ____ ?????" shirts lol
  • When in Malaysia? Haha!
  • Using 640XL, checked for update, no update available. Installed upgrade advisor, checked upgrade from app, and yay, it's available, downloading now. Please use that app. Posted via the Windows Central App for Android
  • What carrier are you using the 640XL on? We have two 640XL's in our household on AT&T and neither show an update ready for install.
  • My Lumia 930, India is getting it now... :D
  • build number?
  • 164
  • For which phones /carriers/countries hmmm
  • Yes all want to know
  • .164? Or something new?
  • I hope something newer.
  • That would put it ahead of the existing Windows 10 Mobile devices though...unless they release an update for existing W10M devices at the same time.
  • .164. Newer builds will first be tested by the insiders.
  • That is not good. .164 is nowhere near where it needs to be for people to be happy if they upgrade from 8.1. I'd call it a downgrade from 8.1.   From what I've read Build 14283 sounds better than .164. .164 still has a lot of bugs.
  • Yip. From "Coming soon" to "Too Soon" Its stable, but still buggy.
  • 14283 has more bugs than 164... It is the second redstone build available and will introduce new functionality that might or might not work in a few builds. Sent from my Windows 10 PC.
  • .164 is a very good candidate for the supported phones.
  • Not even close
  • .164 works great on my 640 xl. No random restarts, no bugs, nothing except that background one.
  • So bugs then lol
  • Every os has some bugs.
  • Yea.. Some. This takes the cake however
  • Dude. come on. No bugs? I have blank tiles when opening folders or returning to start screen, text flickering when changing songs while listening to music (something that 14283 fixed). MS apps crashing, And a camera app that crashes during rich capture.   This sucks man. I guarentee people are going to **** all over this .164 build. I don't want to leave Windows Phone. Been using them since WP7. Releasing an OS this buggy is going to hurt Windows Phone. They can't afford that with 2% of smartphone users using WP.
  • Yeah, the text flickering, I forgot about that. That's all for me.
  • Text flickering has already been fixed in a build, why is it still a problem with the build they are releasing? There are are over 10,000 upvotes for them to fix this bug just on the first page of feedback. I listen to music all the time. And not being able to read what is about to play is frutrating.   It's a big deal for alot of people.
Post sarcatic comments in a month when w10m users switch to iphone or Android when they are fed up with buggy w10m. Both iphone and Android have beeter MS apps than w10m devices. Outlook being one of them.
  • Because Redstone right now has more bugs.
  • Regardless of which build has more bugs. w10m is not ready for a public release. This is like when they released the 950's and they got terrible reviews. This build is buggy, too buggy to release to the public. It's another nail in the coffin. I give up man.
  • It's not even close to 'acceptable' on my 730. Too many glitches.
  • Now all I need to know is when it'll come to the BLU Win HD. It was confirmed it would be able to update to Windows 10 Mobile sometime last year. Posted from Windows Central for Windows 10
  • Wow... But what about guys on insider previews?? I am on release preview channel?? Posted via Windows Central App for Windows 10
  • Do we get out of windows insider or just download the offical?
  • You are already on W10m... Aren't you? Sent from my Windows 10 PC.
  • You already have the last version.
  • What about firmware update??
  • Firmware updates will be available to few phones, not all of them. Some phone won't need that. If your phone needs one, you will get when the update it's available Over the Air. (without using this Upgrade App).
  • U really don't need to get out of insider preview and get the latest cuz you already are on one! Posted from Lumia 730 running Windows 10
  • It's finally here! Let's get installing!
  • Lumia icon?
  • Reportedly the 930 has it and that's just the international version. With the way Verizon is you might be better just using Windows Insider and trying production and if that doesn't work use slow ring. If I remember correctly slow ring is on the same version right now as release. I wouldn't hold my breath for Verizon to rush to release officially.
  • Mazel tov This comment was posted on Windows Central for Windows 10 UWP.
  • No 540
  • Yes, 540 is on the list. It will be able to get the upgrade in most cases
  • 1020??? Posted via the Windows Central App for Android
  • I'm honestly hoping that they don't push it to the 920's.  good phone on 8.1, slow as a snail on 10.  the 1020 would probably be the same since it's the same processor, only difference is RAM.
  • It's not coming to the 920 or the 1020 according to the upgrade FAQ - I agree it's probably a good thing. The 1020 was bloody slow, I know from experience - If it had 930 internals w/ 1020 sensor it would have been a beast.
  • Too bad, I have been running .164 since it came out on my 1020 and it has been great. Smooth and responsive, no phone freezes, no hard or soft reset. Lucky I guess, or just BS from MS.
  • I got non-insider .29 in January on T-Mobile Germany. It already rolled out on some carriers weeks ago. Posted from Windows Central for Windows 10
  • Thank you Microsoft
  • Only for Lumia 435, Lumia 535, Lumia 635 1 GB, Lumia 640, Lumia 640 XL, Lumia 735, Lumia 730, Lumia 830, Lumia 930,Lumia 1520
  • Yeah!!!!!! Sooooo coooll!!!!!!
  • If I am on Release Preview Ring, should I go back to production? Do I need to reinstall everything? I am sure WC will come up with an article on this soon :P
  • That's what I'm wondering lol. Do we get out of windows Insider?
  • You are already on w10m, aren't you? Sent from my Windows 10 PC.
  • If you are on release preview, you are on the same build. Remove yourself if you don't want future builds of this branch (not Redstone)
  • That's what I think too. I assume a rollback is not needed. BTW, W10M .164 is pretty stable on my 930, been using for around 2 weeks now.
  • Funny enough, it seems better on all of my devices except my 950. Hope the AT&T firmware comes fairly soon. My and my wife's 1520 is running great. Dare I say 8 great? Maybe....
  • Do not rollback!!! Posted from Lumia 730 running Windows 10
  • yeah stable but there's fast battery draining and heat too. .107 was cool and long lasting for me
  • Wen on Mars?
  • Lol
  • When on Venus and Moon ?
  • When in Uranus?
  • It originated from there
  • Do I opt out of windows insider and download the official or stay?
  • Not sure, I was wandering the same. I opted out of it. There is a Leave Program choice in the elipses menu in the Windows Insider app.
  • You guys are already on w10m. Sent from my Windows 10 PC.
  • And its buggy
  • I've opted out to see if it would hit my phone and it told me that I was up to date. Running .164 on a 1520... Posted from Windows Central for Windows 10
    Using My Beastly 1520
  • Same here. .164 on 640xl. Hopefully it's the latest redstone build (14283) and not .164. .164 is still buggy and the Edge browser is almost unusable. In my opinion.
  • If .164 is buggy for you then Redstone will be far worse...
  • hehehehhe.... i cant believe its just happening... thanku microsoft...
  • Is it available for lumia 535?
  • Yes.
  • I have checked it through update advisor n from the phone update too it is showing ur phone is upto date & no upgrade is required m using 535 (india)
  • Update the upgrade advisor app first then check
  • Upgrade advisor app is not available in the app store.
  • Check em again.
  • Download Update Advisor apps if u wanna get the w10m(public release) update. *For selected device only*
  • Which type of selected devices? cuz i can't in 1520 Posted from Windows Central for Windows 10
  • Lumia with 1gb of ram or higher accept 1020/1320/920/925/820(idk why). U should get the update if you're using wp 8.1
  • I can't even find the app in the store and I'm not able to download it from the internet side.  I'm using a 1520 as well.
  • Here's the link for Update Advisor : https://www.windowscentral.com/e?link=https2F%2Fclick.linksynergy.co...
  • Likely processor related but also because MS hasn't spent much time validating much older devices.
  • I think they will allow the update sometime later. May be to avoid server traffic
  • This app is not available by directly searching into store. Search in internet explorer and then open the official Microsoft site and it will take you to the store then download it
  • Finally!!!!!!!!!
  • Not for india right???? Posted from Windows Central for Windows 10
  • No buddy... The update has rolled in india also...provided your device is listed in the 1st round of update
  • Which are the devices?????
    It's 640 DS enlisted
  • Its available through upgrade advisor app

  • Yes -- I don't understand why. As far as I know, my 928 is a 1 GB device.
