Windows Capture 3D will let you easily bring objects around you into your digital workspace

On stage at its Windows 10 event today, Microsoft announced Windows Capture 3D: a way to easuily bring objects around you into your digital workspace with nothing more than a Windows Phone.

Windows Capture 3D

Windows Capture 3D was shown off on stage using an HP Elite X3, but it will work with any capable Windows Phone. The process works by using your phone's camera to cycle around any object your choose to scan it into 3D digital space. From there, Windows Capture 3D creates a 3D model of the object that you can fully manipulate and throw into, for example, something you're working on in Paint 3D.

  • Coming to iPhone first... Thanks Nutella
  • Was that stated in the live feed, or did you not read paragraphs 1 and 2?
  • Oh... You must be new here. No matter what they say, Nutella's first priority is iOS.
  • I agree with you bro
  • Oh, you must be new here. Whatever is being said/done, few idroid trolls are sure to come and hate. Usually wildly off topic
  • Ummm, im not an iPhone or android fan. Have been a huge Microsoft fan forever. I'm just sick of this lame duck CEO destroying the consumer portion of the company, everyone knows it, and if you point it out you are a racists. He flat out sucks in the long term big picture. Needs to go and I'm hammering him non stop until they do. Right now the only person in that company with passion is Panos. Screw Nutella.
  • Panos didn't exactly get behind the Lumias did he?
  • the only part he came in for the Lumia 950 and Lumia 950XL were the so called "liquid cooling technology" in phones
  • Oh, you must be new here. Whatever stupid thing MS does the fan(ataic)s on this site will downvote anything that is not a praise for Lord Satya and his new MS. Granted they didn't mention anything about iPhone or Android because it was Windows 10 event after all, the history shows that @missionsparta is probably right. Since Nadella took over they clearly do it everything on iPhone and Android first. So, don't get upset if someone points that out.
  • I guess you're also new here. Can't speak for other people and neither can you, but whenever I downvote it's because it's trollish comment. The credibility and seriousness of a comment is lost when people go into name calling like "nutella" or "Lord Satya" as you are putting it, or going into every WC article and writing irrelevant comments about iphone and android. It's fine to have a negative opinion about microsoft or not agreeing with the direction they're going, but write about it in a reasonable way. It's that simple.
  • Troll comments are people looking for a reaction. I dont want or need a reaction. I'm just posting facts and positions based on what this idiot has done so far. This company is disappearing quick. The whole corporate before consumer thing is ancient. The consumer and employee is pushing a lot of what happens in corporate. They tell people all the time they cant use iphones within a company because of security. Guess what...they still used them and now the companies have given up the fight and are trying to figure out how to incorporate them more into the business sector. Nutella is clueless.

  • I am sorry missionsparta, but you sounded like a whiner right there. You are not even speaking the facts as they are in front of you, just regurgitating anti-Nutella rhetoric. Wait for them to announce release of the app for iPhone "first" then you can repost this (for now, irrelevant) statement.
  • Awwww... But I value your opinion so much.... That's a shame.
  • Nah. They haven't done anything like that in years.
  • Did you not see in the image a Windows Phone being used for this? Or do you need an appointment at the opticians?
  • So, they're using an HP elite x3 in the demo. The app is already at least compiled and sideloaded for w10m...
  • RELEASE the app to INSIDERS NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • (crickets)
  • Most of us have one foot out the door, thanks to Nutella.
  • Bye....
  • How polite. Thanks
  • Don't leave the door open when you're out.
  • Nutella cancelled the door... No door to close.
  • why? afraid the few that are still in the camp will leave too?
  • Huh????
  • Haha, door's closed but not locked.
  • I hope I can get it on my 1520!
  • If it's an Apple product, yes.
  • It might be performant enough.
  • This could be one of those features only on phones came preinstalled with Windows 10 Mobile
  • that's the only cool new feature, the others things don't have any interests.
By the way I'm sure this new feature will not work properly, only works with sand castle lol
  • Was that a WP being used in the demo!?! Holy crap.
  • I think it was the HP Elite X3
  • Looks interesting but Satay Nutella is basically destroying the consumer part with his strategy to focus on enterprise only. Being a loyal Windows Phone / Windows 10 Mobile user, I felt betrayed on Microsoft giving up on normal consumers like us. Sad. BTW satay or sate is an Asian food.
  • Uh oh.... You are dead right, but get ready to be down voted by the blind BS crowd.
  • And Nutella is a chocolate hazelnut spread.
  • It's also a garbage CEO that is hiding behind his race (cant criticize him without being labeled a racists).
  • no one here has called you a racist (at least not that i've read yet) and i've yet to see anyone claim racism when someone criticizes him. however, i've found very little relevant criticism. you claim he can't see the big picture, but i think you're the one stuck on short term gains. Windows 10 Mobile as is *can't* compete in the consumer world. It needs to be improved. That's a simple fact. Personally, they should release a Surface Mini that's a tablet running Windows 10 Mobile without the phone part. That way, people can get into the W10M environment without having to switch away from their phones. Then the audience can grow. People are less willing to part with their phone and join a new OS, but they'll be fine with another device. No sacrifices needed. Because honestly, for a large portion of people, sacrifices are needed if you switch from Android/iOS to W10M. Honestly, what would you have done differently? Maybe if someone can pinpoint your flaws, you'll better realize why this is the best way forward.
  • Essentiall the device you are describing would be considered not a Surface Mini but a Surface RT Mini and we all saw how well that was adopted. If it is going to have a chance it needs to be a phone. The tablet side is already covered. Even other manufacturers who sold smaller tablets said demand for small Windows tablets was small while demand for larger was much higher.
  • Ummm...go back through comments to me. I've been referred to as a racists many times dealing with him and his idiocy. Do yourself a favor and dont tall about things you know nothing about.
  • "His race"? He is hiding behind humans?
  • Is good that MS still have team of employees with innovative mind there. But under Satay Nutella is just a waste, there's no vision or future for consummer windows phone anymore. Acquired Nokia technologies and patterns but wasted bunch of talents. May god be with Lumia
  • I agree with you, but how many accounts so you have?
  • Sweet
  • Cool! This feature is useful for business and consumer field.
  • Wow, they just gave us Panorama, now this?  Looks very interesting, and something I would actually use at work and home... Hopefully one of the "Creater" updates includes a few other little fixes bothering me, I may just pick up a 950 (X3 is overpriced, IMO)
  • The X3 isn't overpriced compared to similar phones (Google Pixel XL) but I agree there's cheaper options out there that do the same thing pretty much just as well for a lot cheaper - Lumia 950/XL is a real bargain right now, and the Acer Jade Primo too unlocked SIM Free for £199
  • I hope the Lumia Icon will be powerful enough to handle this app.
  • Creating 3D images from Windows Phone as in the sand castle example was phenomenal. I can't wait for Windows Create Edition comes to Windows Phone 10.
  • It's not a new Edition of Windows 10, the Creators Update is the next update. ie. it's the commercial name for the internally named Redstone 2 update.
  • 3D Pictures with your smartphone!! No with your Microsoft Lumia Phone or HP Elite X3 with Windows 10!! Why didn't they say that?! What a great selling feature for Windows Phones & Microsoft blew it!!
  • Look at it this way, the goal is NOT to sell more Windows phones....The whole thing they were getting at is allowing everybody to be super creative in new ways, and to do that they will likely bring the same app to iOS and Android which is totally fine and expected
  • It would've still cost nothing to say it. To that end I'd suggest you flip the words NOT and TO.
  • Nice if this comes from their PhotoSynth roots. And friends, this Microsoft strategy to have great iDroid apps is a sound one to get attention of consumers on these not so great mobile os-es. These iDroid consumers might very well convert to a future Microsoft device with the best user experience for those apps and have a seamless Continuum experience and great Windows Ink as well.
I don't see iDroid pulling off such ux soon.
  • Actually this can be huge to one of our companies in wedding business. Customers can use this in the fitting room and take a 3D pictures from themselves (= shop assistant will take) wearing different styles and then compare them again in their homes. If they do not have right phone, we can provide to them one of our windows phones to take the pictures. This is huge!
  • A colleague just voiced his concern that this tech might be used by perverts for improper captures. It's a valid concern, unless the app can detect if it's a human and block the user from doing a scan.
  • I'd notice someone circling me with their phone. What exactly us the nature of your friend's concern?
  • I really want to know if anybody at the event has seen this app in action? If not it may not be working as shown quite yet - Still an amazing idea but eager to know if the actual sandcastle model used in the demo was captured before hand using different hardware.
  • This is quite amazing! Must be very processor intensive. I mean, I'm guessing the processor needs to compare several images, in order to calculate the depth of parts of the object. I mean, how else would the app know from a 2d image?

While typing, I thought about this.... probably by shifting the focal point at different positions..... Still... pretty awesome!
