Yes, WhatsApp now has blue checks for read messages

WhatsApp is worth billions of dollars, and there seems to be a good reason for that: many of you are using it, at least according to the flood of tips we are now getting.

Today on the backend for WhatsApp they have evidently thrown a switch to make the double checks blue for when someone reads your messages. Previously, they were white, ahem.

Usually, we would pass on this news, but since around twenty of you have tipped us in the last 30-minutes, we figured it was worth a quick mention.

You do not need to update the app, as this is something that the WhatsApp team has done server side. So just enjoy the blue checks.

• Best story I have written all day. /s
• Certainly the easiest!
• Dany, go grab a drink for this hard work.
• Yes mine is also showing
• LOL, if there was an 'Article of the year' contest, this one would definitely win it.
• Well Dan did not ask us how we feel about this. Article of year needs that for sure and first comment as seems faster.
• I have saw a post that there is someone who discovered how to disable it , here http://www.deposit-tools.com/disable-blue-ticks-whatsapp , after reading the trick i have applied it and it works great because i tested with my brothers smartphone
• Can anyone tell what archived messages means ???
• Well not sure how it works on WP, but on iPhone you can swipe to delete an old conversation but instead of selecting "delete", you click "more", then "Archive". The conversation will disappear from your conversations pane as if you'd deleted it... but when you open a new chat to that same contact, the old conversation is still there.
• Oh I was expecting some out of this world WhatsApp update at first. But look what you did.
• Still no blue for me !!! Its of light accent colour -_-
• You might be using the old version of WhatsApp; once you update it you will find the blue ticks. I would say don't go for the upgrade as this feature is really annoying. You can refer to this article for more - Disable Whatsapp Read Notification Cheers
• I have the latest version of Whatsapp but no blue check marks for me
• The requirement for blue tik is - your WhatsApp in addition with other person's WhatsApp should be latest.
• *pats back*
• Came in to state the same....
• You've done worse in the past. Remember those two lines of articles?
• +1
• This is great news. I like knowing if the one I sent the message to, has read it. Before this I only knew if they received it, but not if it was read.
• I used to rely on the last seen.
• And the award for the best snark in an article goes to... Daniel Rubino!
• The white check marks meant the message was delivered. And NOT read. Just FYI.
• The white check marks meant the message was delivered. And NOT read. Just FYI.
• That was such a good remark, say it again...
• The white check marks meant the message was delivered. And NOT read. Just FYI.
• That BS emoji proposal has shown its effects. /s
• It's funny how you have to tell everyone "you don't need an update" in a big font because so many people are extremely lazy...
• Seems best-ier :)
• Facebookification in progress...
• And the only one :)
• I think, one should not joke about those things. At first, it may appear like an unimportant detail, but when you take a deeper look, this may damage the user's privacy. Of course I do not give a s*** if someone tells me that I should answer him/her as soons as I apparently read a message. But one is now able to follow your smartphone usage in one more way. And as we all know, this can allow further conclusions.. I hope, you guys keep being critical about that (may be a european thing, I know..)
• Nice article ever, Thanks for sharing such a wonderful article.
How to Disable Blue Tick
Thanks.
• In watsapp it has one feature that many of us dont know.. We can hear our voice messages like phone call .. That is nobody can hear except us..play ur voice msg nd Take ur phone close to ur ear.. Automatically the volume gets decreased..
• Thank you WhatsApp !!
• This is useless......how about compressing my videos so I can send more than the first 7 seconds.....
• Use video compressor app
• Actually, this is quite useful. Usefulness is relative. For example, I would sooner have audio sharing (mp3) than video compression.
• Gotta love those checks!!!
• Check.
• Mate.
• Boom.
• shakalaka!
• Boom boom, I want you in my room
• This is old news
• No, no it is not.
• Nope, been active for me for about 20 mins.
• Yeah man, an hour old for me. Windows Central is so slow... /s
• Actually I do hope MS bring something like this into the default Messaging/SMS app.
• Amen to that, MS's message app sure needs something like this!
• I'm sure it would if the SMS protocol actually supported it.
• I'm not sure for 100% how the SMS protocol works, but I'm almost sure that it's fairly possible.
• SMS has delivery reports provided the network supports it (which is not common). It doesn't have seen/read reports at all.
• In the UK every network supports delivery reports other then O2. Windows Phone implementation for Delivery Reports is retarded though. Comes up in a seperate message, instead of just showing a tick or something on the message to show it's been delivered.
• Yeah, I know WP supports the "delivered" protocol if the network supports it (as evidenced by the WP SDK and emulator), but most networks don't support it, so alas. Honestly, I wish the Big Three (Apple, Google and Microsoft) would get together and worm with carriers to update the SMS protocol for the modern day smartphone user. Basically: I want to be exactly like iMessage, but open-source. Especially for sent/read/typing receipts. I know this won't happen, but I can dream. Because while third party messaging services are great, I'm personally very happy with the built in Messaging app on WP, and just wished SMS/MMS supported more modern features.
• Yes, changing the color of check symbol is soo needed. Lol.
• You cannot change the color of the check, because, surprise surprise, it's not there! That's what I'm asking for. I have to check the messages from the carrier to check if an SMS was delivered. We are living in 2015 almost ffs.
• Why do you need a confirmation?
It it's not sent then it tells me (my phone does, at least), that's when I know I have to resend it.
• And it is not there because... Surprise surprise! There is not support for that on SMS.
• So there is a support for receiving a message from the carrier that the message was delivered, however you're saying that it's impossible to change this thing into a "check". Hm, sounds bs to me.
• It's been done on Android and Nokia before that. It is possible this guy is just an idiot.
• Agree! This one's a basic feature, and all the other OS have this except wp.. I don't know why this is not included even after those updates :/
• I guess its time we stopped comparing WP to android and iOS.
Rather we should think of new and innovative features that might make the other platforms drool for. Getting the check colour change wont help bring other people to the platform.
• Everything is going to shit.
• Haha. Agreed.
• Facebook is coming ;) in the near future both messengers will be merged!
• Source?
• WhatsApp belongs to Facebook, sure they say both will be their own Messenger. But nothing is more logic than to merge both. Their are many rumors like mine and i think it is just a matter of time!
• Except merging them would mean having to use your Facebook account, and leave you unable to message those you don't know, or indeed want to know, on Facebook. It would basically become Facebook Messenger 2, the sequel nobody wanted.
• I expect WhatsApp to take over Facebook messenger, much like Skype took over Windows Live Messenger customers.
• Haha I was on the way to tip you guys about this than I saw your article
• Apparently not in the NL...
• Still white for me
• same here
• Same
• No colour change :/
• Maybe no one reads your messages?
• LOL
• Same here. Im in the Philippines.
• Yaya the biggest news of today, I can already see tomorrows headlines!
• It's a *bit* more than that, Dan. White double check - Message delivered. Blue double check - Message read. It's on WhatsApp's FAQ's, if you need confirmation.
• But White double check was already there...
• Read properly. White double check means it was delivered, but not read . Blue checks mea s it was delivered AND read.
• Is Read Confirmation relatively new? I haven't used WhatsApp in a year or two, but they never had that back then. Only message send & deliver. I could have benefitted from Read confirmation, back then. Had terrible messaging issues...
• The blue double checkmarks in group chat...does that mean ALL parties have seen it then? Thx
• These apps are too invasive. I don't want people to know I'm ignoring them intentionally.
• ^^^This^^^ It needs a toggle. My phone is for MY convenience, not someone elses. I sometimes may not reply to a text for hours after I read it and sometimes not at all.
• You are right bro we can see it in message details
• Mine has not changed yet
• What? No update? Kidding of course.
• Wow what is considered news has changed.
• As Daniel plainly pointed out, the reason this is news is the sheer volume of tipsters. Good work tipsters, keep Daniel on his toes!
• Sweet
• Wow
• Well I wish they change the chat bubbles shape ( and colours) to match that of other platforms...
• That is a bad idea
• urgh god no! they're one of the few apps following the design concepts and guidelines of windows phone quite closely. if i would want my apps to look like on android, i'd just move to android.
• Bye bye
• No bye bye. Staying because he believes in Modern Design. Can't wait until WhatsApp for Android is updated with Material Design. That will be a day.
• No Update for now
• Great work guys.. Oosm
• this is old news .. It used to happen during voice notes also
• Go read all the comments here, come back, and then you can fix your comment for being wrong ;)
• It only works when you send some audio.
• Try chatting with yourself .. You'll get the blue tick ,. :p
• I'll do it as soon as you tell me how to chat with myself.
• Add your number in your contacts .. Refresh favourites .. And then chat
• Ok got it. And what's the point of that?
• Mine is still white
• Yeah yeah, I am sure on Android and iOS they can pick the color.. or worse, have three check marks in three different colors.
• Actually my friends have android and they don't have the blue check feature yet.
• Hi, whatsapp wont open for me, it is on my start screen but it has become transparent? What is going on, any help appreciated thanks
• Restart. Repin. Reinstall.
• Means it needs to be re-installed.
• Turnoff your backup from settings
• Pls is this gonna work for my BBM app that is stuck on "setting up bbm" screen??
• Nothing changed
• Not available for me Edit: Available
• Not changed yet in Argentina
• Finally, this is way better to check if your message is read or not.

• Mine is white, but my best friend is black ahem
• Its still White..is it specific to regions???
• It only works when you send audio.
• Anyone else's whatsapp not working?
• "goddamn tips" ! Daniel! Such rudeness!!
• It is white still in my phone
• But the double check wasn't for read messages.
They were always for received messages, even if not read. Maybe now with the blue means that actually they are read by the other user? Telegram already worked well in this
• I'm.not sure what your definition of "read" is in this context, but if you're implying that the double check means it hit the recipient's server and not that they actually opened the app then you're wrong. It doesn't change to a double check until you open the app, but your phone has the message. I'm assuming you weren't implying it meant they actually read your message.
• I was assuming that and not, you are wrong. I already checked and tried in front of other friends that thought double checks meant read messages. Instead it means received in the received phone. 1 check means "sent".
2 means received. But not actually read. Try it yourself. If now, with this huge upgrade of the blue checks it means actually means as read I cannot say anything yet, but about before, for sure it was not. Also my iPhone friends thought the same and they saw they were wrong.
• Are you back to using your green 1520 as your daily driver? Thought you were gonna take the 830 for an extended spin!
• Wouldn't work, the SMS system simply doesn't work that way.
• I don't see the the update when I click "download app." (I couldn't help it guys..... I just had to). :-)
• Read the full article.... U don't have to update.
• I was hoping that you could tell that I was joking, but thanks. You can't miss the increased font sizes.
• I think he knew that. He just wanted to say it for the hell of it.
• It's all handy dandy (Whatever that means) :-)
• The word "typing..." at the top of the screen is also blue now
• Still no blue.
• Well working .well but not all The time lol :D i Want those in gold
• I don't see anything different, still white
• I JUST realized that right before see this article
• Cortana support come on
• That explains why the app crashed all of a sudden and the tile remained "transparent" for a while. I went to the store to see if it was updating, but no. Pretty neat! But all I want is the (simple!) ability to select multiple messages.
• Mine has been transparent for a while now, how long was yours like that for? It happened the other day as well but fixed quicker
• mine too for like 2 hours now, what's happening?
• Mine lasted for about 5-6 minutes. I didn't even reset my device or anything. I just figured it would take a while and did other things. When I went back to the start screen, there it was back to normal.
• The same thing happened to me! The tile was transparent and so I checked the store. When I was back at the start, it was all fixed up. But the blue ticks haven't shown up in my phone yet. Wonder why ?
• I fail to realize the significance of the color change :<
• Mine is still white! :-|
Is it supposed to happen by itself or is there a setting for it?!
• It happens by itself. Mine started tonight only with one friend. Now I get it on three of them. It seems it updates one by one
• Tnx for the help ;-)
• Seems fas... ...ah f*ck it
• I was waiting for someone to say "seems bluer".
• *cues up Eiffel65*
• Seems stupider.
• That's funny. Very funny.
• I regret updating WhatsApp. Since I updated it on my Lumia 720, it became really sluggish. Any suggestions?
• A new phone? 720 is starting to show its age.
• LOL! But I have to agree with the poor fella. It got worse on my 925 after this last update, too.
• Wtf!
• Wth
• Facebook fingers
• I think I like it.
• So I just tested, and they turn blue only when the other person OPENS the chat. If he's in the WhatsApp app and doesn't open your chat, they're white. Just like BBM. Makes life harder for us introverts.
• Lol this is news? But anyway, not seeing this on L920 in Canada yet
• Check de WhatsApp FAQ!
• Great. I thought I was going insane.
• Still white for me :P do I have to do something for have it? :(
• Is that for all platforms?? Or Windows only??
• All
• Lol I've been seeing this for a while now...
• Me too!
• Thanks windows central for this news,I'm the first one in all my WhatsApp groups to tell about this update and ive proudly put a screenshot of your article in those groups ;)
• Now it means I cant put 'cyan' accent in my phone :(
• Now I have a reason to use WhatsApp
• Interesting. I can certainly notice blue checks for read messages both on my Lumia and iPhone. I assume Whatsapp enabled this feature for all OSs today.
• Awesomeeeeeeeeee
• When you send a message in a group and tap and hold your sent message and tap info, you can see which people of the group have seen your message and at what time..
• Not seeing that on mine yet. Would have thought white was better, because if you set you accent colour to cyan...
• It will look ugly as fuck on my yellow bubbles. Or kinky..
• I don't see the good news
• "Previously, they were white, ahem." They still are white, however there's now blue too. They never had a way to tell if the message had been read or not, they only had a way to tell if the message had been delivered which was shown by the two white ticks.
• Yes!! I think that almost anyone understood right. The white check still there, but they turn in blue when your contact read the message.
• that checks appaer first white..then blue when the other person actually opens ur window so it seems.. i think thats the logic..when they get online checks turn blue
• If you long press on your text message and then on info you can see when exactly someone has read your message
• indeed..read blue,delivered white
• Cool
• +920.
• in BBM this color changing of message status is quite good as compared to whatsapp, but anyways atleast they have started.
• Seems faster on 1320 Cyan + DP.280. Got them blues too
• Based on the number of folks with only white checkboxes it doesnt sound like their "friends" are reading their messages.
• I've noticed with some people you see no blue check marks and if you check the info of the message it does show read with two blue check marks but with three dots on,the right instead of a time. Can anyone explain this?
• After the last update it's draining the battery to much XS
• it's relatively hard to tell the blue check if you are using cyan accent color :(
• Looks like an update for WhatsApp just came out
• I think WhatsApp just got updated again with bug fixes. Check for updates!
• Does this mean cyan is coming to the moon with the release of the Lumia 1530 mini on ATmo&T!!??
• Nothing change
• There's an update in the store now.
• Yep just got.. Article needs an update line.
• Damm...i couldn't notice it till nw, since my theme was cyan!
• Talking about Whatsapp, an update is live.
• Why can't we have this in our standard text messaging for windows phone?
• The update doesn't get installed to the sd card..
• Is this a windows phone only feature?
• No blue color for me
• Not showing blue tick in India..
• Not happening on mine! Cant see any blue checks!
• Yeah no Blue tick on WP in India....only my friends on Android have it....what's happening Microsoft???!
• Yesterday they were blue..for sometime..but now not...may be some Microsoft issue..
• Same for me.
• Till yesterday my ticks were blue..but now they are as usual white...what's with this..??
• Just when I realise that I'm colour-blind
• My blue thicks only works if i chat with another wp user, it didnt work with android or ios user
• Argh, now I got to update my design suggestion!!! Nonetheless, folks on this forum, it will be fantastic if you can review the work that I so wish WhatsApp should incorporate (and send me to a trip to their HQ maybe...haha) - it's about recalling a message. Here's the link to my blog which has mock-ups to explain all that: http://yousayability.wordpress.com/2014/10/29/when-right-is-not-tight/
• My blue ticks are working perfectly fine with all users. It seems the other person also needs to be with the latest whatsapp update.
• This thing works, it turns blue
• Not seeing in my Lumia 822..!!
• It just works from windows phone to windows phone only
• I think you are right...
Mine also showing only for windows phone to windows phone
• But now its working on android and for iphone too
• Its not working here in india
• Mine is not showing
• still white for me
• I don't know if it's just me but the blue checkmarks don't show in group messaging. It does work for me in 1 on 1 conversations though.
• No blue check for me ??
• Blasting what's app in WP
• If you do not see two blue check marks next to your sent message The recipient may not have opened your conversation. The recipient may be using an outdated version of WhatsApp. You or the recipient may be experiencing connection issues. Via: http://www.whatsapp.com/faq/en/android/28000015
• Not showing for me
• I am not seeing any change at Al in the colors...
Dunno why..
• Updated version is required, for both, the one who is sending message and for the one receivng fir this to work
• I'm not getting the blue checks
• Me too not getting blue checks for Nokia Lumia 920. Tries to chat with new recipients' as well. Any tips??
• Updated version is required, for both, the one who is sending message and for the one receivng fir this to workk
• Its showing blue checks...but only when I message to other windows phone..or not any other android or iOS..
• Yea same here wen i send to a WP it turns to blue but to IOS nd Android its the same white!! :/
• Check now...it started turning blue for all the platforms
• Yea bro just noticed its slowly changing!! :) but still to android one isn't changing!!
• Take a break ..it will change... In India it has started... May be some of your friends are not using updated version.
• Please don't tell me that the other person will se blue ticks even if I switch off the data connection , see the message and again turn on the data connection. (As many of us have done earlier)
• btw I am getting blue checks replying to Symbian S40
• Meh.
• Long press the tick mark.u can see who read the msg.wrks gud in grp chats
• Thanks.
• stil cant share audio :(
• Nothing change.
• No ticks for me yet.
• Mine still white check
• Still it's not turning blue, at least for me... :-(
• Started turning blue in India...for all the platforms
• But not mine
• Mine are still in white only
using 520 in India
• Ya its fine but there is a problem with Android to windows phone , its ok with windows to windows but the problem Im not getting blue color tick marks when any one send me msg from their android phone, but they are saying that they getting when after I read the msg. Wat was the problem it was irritating. Can u plzzzzz fix this bug......
• Same here but to ios its working Fyn!! Oly to android some prob!! Till now for oly one android contact has changed to blue rest the same!!
• It is exactly cyan not just blue. I know I have a cyan theme on the device and I can't see the double checks... OMG
• I dont know why but its not working fr me
• I didn't see anything after today's update
• Lol I didn't notice my theme is blue too.. But it's good
• It's not working from android to WP, WP didn't turn blue the double check of the app
• Not every chat got blue checks after read from receiver
• Not showing for me lumia925 India..
• How to check..none of my friends uses windows phone
• I want Skype to work like WhatsApp, they need to make big updates for Skype. I use mostly Skype, but I agree WhatsApp is working more smart and easy about messages.
• No blue marks comming
• And I am still waiting for this miracle to happen
• Shows blue ticks for some conversations and no blue ticks for most.
• My chekmark is white :|
• I don't know for sure but I think the blue ticks are actually a new feature. Again, this is just me speculating, but I still see the white double ticks before they turn blue, and I think that a single white tick means the message was sent to the WhatsApp server successfully, two white ticks means the message was delivered to the recipient's phone successfully (so far, this is how the app worked previously) and now the new feature is that when the message is read the two ticks turn blue.
• No blue checks for conversation it is white only...
• Android users get the blue checks no matter what type of phone the recipient is using. iPhone and BB users get the checks only if the recipient is using an iPhone or a BB, but if recipient is using an Android, they will not get the blue checks.
• Blue....So what!!
• That blue ticks come only for particular comtacts
• Its not working !!
• Does it work for messages sent to a group?
• Blue color ticks are not coming for me if any Android user is seen my msg wat is the problem with it
• Mine hasn't turned blue what's going on
• I got the newest update 2.11.596 but not the blue checks from the server.
• Same here, I do not see blue check even read my message , no one knows why that is ?
• Add the video call and u will be the king.
• how to Disable blue ticks on windows 8.1 as in android
• WhatsApp seems to be updated. Now we can see ticks in the chats section without viewing the message. The ticks are updated to Blue if the message I read in the chats section itself. Try it out.
