It's a little dated, but The Outer Worlds is still a great sci-fi RPG whose blueprints gave us an even better sequel years later
The Outer Worlds won many accolades and helped kick-start Obsidian Entertainment's renaissance from 2019 onwards for good reason.
It is a well-made RPG packed with a dense 30-hour main campaign that will have you laughing out loud at its humor, immersed in its fascinating world-building, and horrified during its darkest moments, which will make you ask philosophical questions about life.
What's more, The Outer Worlds has tons of replay value. This is thanks to the game's rich myriad of dialogue choices, which can alter the course of the plot and story arcs of NPCs you meet, not just based on your morals but your character's build as well, as investing in certain stats can unlock secret dialogue options.
Now granted, the original game had some rough patches that would later be ironed out in The Outer Worlds 2.
The combat system, while fun due to its gore and time-dilation mechanic, was relatively simple and somewhat finicky when trying to manage AI party members.
Plus, the NPCs outside of quest-important conversations felt like lifeless robots more so than the actual robots you fight in the game.
However, these are minor inconveniences in the grand scheme of things, as this game's world and stories will captivate you so much that you will forget these flaws ever existed.
So, if you're a fan of Sci-fi RPGs with a humorous yet secretly dark edge to it and packed with meaningful dialogue choices that reshape the world around you, then we highly recommend The Outer Worlds.
The Outer Worlds is now on sale for PC via Steam with a 71% discount on Newegg, taking its $29.99 MSRP down to $8.59. This is a pretty good discount as it provides PC players a cheaper introduction to The Outer Worlds franchise compared to The Outer Worlds 2, which is currently running for $69.99 on Xbox, PlayStation, and PC.
