You don’t need a $1,500 laptop — Dell’s 14 Plus proves the smarter buy is the simple one

Paying extra for a laptop in a pretty color or with fancy design elements isn't needed when you just want to get work done. Sometimes you need the beige cardigan of laptops, and I mean that as a compliment.

The Dell 14 Plus is affordable, portable, and a productivity machine. If you want a laptop that will let you get work done without being overpriced, this is the one.

"It’s not perfect... but for the price and the performance on offer the [Dell] 14 Plus is easily one of the best Windows laptops going, and should be at the top of the list for students, remote workers, and just about anyone else who needs a solid notebook PC without breaking the bank." ~ John Loeffler, TechRadar

"The Dell 14 Plus is the beige cardigan of laptops — not stylish, not exciting, but somehow always reliable." ~ Jason England, Tom's Guide

Tom's Guide Review: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Why buy the Dell 14 Plus?

The Dell 14 Plus is the follow-up to the Inspiron 14 Plus, though the newer laptop borrows some design elements from older XPS PCs. It's an unassuming PC designed for productivity, and it does that well.

Dell trimmed down the spec sheet and design of the Dell 14 Plus to deliver an affordable laptop that gets work done.

I love shiny gadgets. They're fun to try out and study. But sometimes you just want something that works. If you don't care about flash, the Dell 14 Plus is an excellent laptop.

Usually I wouldn't include phrases like "Dull as dishwater" in a piece highlighting a deal, but that quote from Tom's Guide is appropriate, especially when placed in context. Here's what Jason England had to say about the laptop in his Dell 14 Plus review (the laptop earned a 4/5 from Tom's Guide):

"It’s the most cookie-cutter clamshell with the personality of a corporate email signature. But after a month of using it, I’m thinking “hey, it gets the job done,” and with some gusto too!"

TechRadar gave the Dell 14 Plus high marks as well, though John Loeffler focused more on value than the dull design:

"When I set out to review the Dell 14 Plus, I imagined it would be a fairly standard follow-up to the now-retired Inspiron 14 Plus. But what Dell has produced is actually way better than I was expecting, and offers possibly the best value for its price range of any Windows laptop on the market right now."

Considering Loeffler highlighted the value of the Dell 14 Plus at full price, the current deal on the laptop is a head turner.

FAQ

How is the battery life of the Dell 14 Plus?

The Dell 14 Plus has solid battery life, though it won't top charts or win awards in the category. In the Surfing Battery Test, the Dell 14 Plus lasted 13.5 hours.

Is 16GB of RAM enough in a laptop?

For general productivity, 16GB of RAM is enough for a Windows laptop.

Which configuration is the better deal?

Dell has several deals on the Dell 14 Plus right now. My top recommendation is the $699.99 model due to its low price and value. If you're spending more than $850 on a laptop, it's worth looking around to see what else is on sale.
