Here's what's been fixed and what's broken in the Windows 10 Mobile preview 14295 build

Microsoft has posted a list of what's been fixed and what known issues are in the just released Windows 10 Mobile preview 14295 build that's available for Insiders in the Fast ring.

According to Microsoft's Windows Insider head Gabriel Aul, here's what's been fixed in this build for Windows 10 Mobile:

  • We fixed the issue where If you reset your phone on Build 14291 and restore your phone from a backup, restore will fail to install apps from your backup's apps list leaving blank grey titles on Start. You should be able to reset your phone on this build, do a restore from a backup, and have your apps installed and restored appropriately.
  • We fixed an issue where new languages and keyboards were not downloading. However, there is an issue where the "reboot" UX doesn't appear in the Settings app after downloading a new language or keyboard. You will need to go to Update & security > Phone update and restart your phone manually from there for the new language and keyboard to go into effect.

Here's are the known issues with Mobile users in this build:

  • After updating to the most recent builds from our Development Branch, a system API failure occurs after the update that causes the Microsoft Band 1 or 2 to have sync issues. To get out of this bad state, you can reset your phone on this build, re-pair your Microsoft Band, and syncing should work again.
  • After upgrading to this build from a previous build from our Development Branch, attempting to connect to a Miracast receiver the connection will fail. There is no workaround for this issue unfortunately on Mobile.
  • The Gadgets app will not detect the Microsoft Display Dock on phones running Windows 10 Mobile Insider Preview builds, and thus cannot update the firmware version. If you have a dock which has already been updated to version 4 then this will not affect you. If you have a dock that has not been updated, then you may experience some minor issues with USB-C stability. You will still be able to use your dock and Continuum.

  • Currently on 14291. Will roll back to 10586.164.
  • 14291 is better than 586 at least in my 1520 .-.
  • Agreed. There are a few UI and UIX bugs fixed in 14291 that it is worth it IMO. Downloading 14295 to my Lumia 640 now.
  • Yeah some UI bugs are fixed, but battery performance is poorer in my L640. Plus, some apps, including Windows Central, are crashing.
  • Also on Desktop I have had two apps which did not work (Garmin Express and Banking 4W). Not upgrading for now.
  • Battery seems pretty comparable to me, if you just installed it yesterday give it a cycle for your battery to be proper. Sometimes when I update my battery just drains, but the next charge it works great. Performance seems better or worse depending on what I am doing but UI fixes trump that for me. +640/Win10
  • Question... Where is the damn Gadgets app??? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    ROJO > ARLINGTON, TX > LUMIA 1520 ≥ 950... WAITING FOR 6.2" SURFACE PHONE
  • Indeed. I hear much talk of it here, yet on my Lumia 930 it's nowhere to be found.
  • Most of my apps have been crashing at some point. Recent builds have been the least stable for me. Although I do like how Edge has improved in the last few builds.
  • i'll tell anybody who owns a 640xl Lte to abort updating!
  • That's true, my phone now gets hot plus some apps are showing twice on app list with one faint and the other visible, apps still crashes, I even had an issue where I couldn't get cellular data APN automatically Sent from windows 10 mobile
  • Scrolling is fixed for me on 14291 on my 640 as well.
  • Me too l640
  • That's funny, because it messed up scrolling on my 640.
  • is hotspot fixed? on my Lumia 620 it would disconnect as soon as screen locked.....
  • No issues on my 830 since early TH1 previews. Make sure you're on .164.
  • I've got the same issue on hotspost last week on my Lumia 625 and Lumia 925; this in not a bug but a wrong setting in Data Counter; I solve the issue selecting "unlimited" under data limit and "do not limit backgrount data" (from network and wireless setting-->Data....) Bye!! Corrado
  • do not update your 640. lags, more bugs, and heats up, i presume worse battery too. what annoyed me the most is the no automatic connection to my wifi im rolling abck as we speak
  • i cant send texts looks like a roll back for me too
  • Lol yea I battled with mine too even cellular data APN I had to do a reset Sent from windows 10 mobile
  • I've had it on my 640 since yesterday. Not nearly as responsive as the previous version.
  • I see some bugs related to keyboard too. While typing, sometime the keyboard drops down abruptly on key press.
The whole start screen sometimes flickers weirdly when scrolling.
Sometime installed apps starts downloading again automatically when a Store is opened.
Flickering problem while changing music has gone just partially, not completely.

  • Sorry, did some typing mistake while swiping n type :P
  • Does your phone reboot a lot? My Lumia 640 reboots every 15 minutes
  • "Does your phone reboot a lot?" No it doesn't. Posted from Windows Central for Windows 10
  • Sent my Lumia 640 to endless reboot loop
  • are your texts going? mine arent on a 640xl
  • mine isnt
  • I think I'm staying in the 14291 for now. There aren't much improvements on this build that make it worth updating...
  • Once I upgraded to 14295, I can't even swipe up to unlock my phone anymore. The time just disappears and I'm left with the lockscreen, no matter how many times I soft reset. I feel like preview builds are starting to become more and more unstable with each one. Just wondering, what is the supposed to be the difference between redstone and previous builds? All I notice is maybe a couple new features and a ton of new bugs.
  • I think 14291 drains battery faster than the previous build Sent from windows 10 mobile
  • I think 14291 drains battery faster than the previous build Sent from windows 10 mobile
  • In fact the battery drain so fast that it makes my phone hot and almost un-usable.
  • Performance may vary between different models and users. My 830 is fine on the latest builds, but my mom's 640 was buggy on 291.
  • How do u roll back? Just switch insider rings?
  • WDRT
  • I have several issues too. The most annoying one is having around half the battery life I was "enjoying" in TH2. I won't roll back because I rather have bad battery life and incomplete instructions on Navigation when using in car bluetooth than having to reactivate banking apps.
  • 14291 seems better than .164 on both my 830 and my mom's 640. Let's see what happens on 14295.
  • Let us know Posted via Windows Central app for Windows 10!
    Proudly rocking my Lumia 1520!
  • .164 was crap... It was not meant for public release... Oh and did anyone notice the new animation while resizing the tiles??
  • You are lucky Lumia 1520 made the cut for upgrade
  • Yes I did.
  • Updated it this afternoon. No issues so far. Feels smooth just like 291. Gonna give it a day or two to judge the battery and overall performance.
  • Please tell me how to do that?? Even I want to roll back to .164
  • Follow the link: http://www.windowscentral.com/roll-back-windows-phone-81-windows-10-preview Posted from Windows Central for Windows 10
  • Why do you want to roll back?? Just directly upgrade...
  • I am already on build 14295 but this build is not good enough and stable like 10586.164 That's why i wanna roll back to .164 again
  • What!!! Bro its more stable than all other builds...which phone you have??
  • I am on lumia 640 xl. I know this build is not that bad but because of this build some of my apps which are installed on sd card have stopped working plus i am not able to send text message. Therefore, i wanna roll back to .164 which was more stable and i didnt face these issues with .164
with this build, Check whether apps like 6tag, metro file manager are working fine or not when installed to sd card
  • Kk..
  • Did u roll back to .164?? Plz let me know how tnx.
  • Use WDRT..google it and download it..
  • Will be rolling back. 640 can't send texts or receive calls on my network
  • Me too i cant send and recieve text messages on build 14291 hope it will fix in this build.
  • Hi Anik Sau... How will you roll this back to 10586.164? I need to do that is this latest build has rendered my phone 100% useless. Zero function works, even the basic phone. I need help.. Thanks!
  • You cannot roll back to .164 directly from Redstone builds. You have to install Windows Device Recovery Tool in your pc, then you have to download the OS package and have to install that in your phone using a USB cable. If W8.1 is available, not W10, then you've to update your phone again.
  • How to roll back to .164??? Help plz
  • How do you roll back, cause on my phone i can only reinstall the same build with recovery tool
  • Hey, there's always little things snuck in so I'm hoping keyboard switching in continuum using a physical keyboard's keys works properly. I have to switch keyboards on the phone screen then type, which is frustrating. Currently updating, U.S. dual sim 950 XL.
  • Did you tried windows key + space for changing keyboard language?
  • Was hoping to see a specific remark about improved battery life...let's just hope it's better. Hard to test the previous build as my 1520 would drain to nothing in a couple hours of use...
  • My battery was horrible on all RS builds, but I did a fresh recovery with WDRT and installed 14291 before doing anything - no restores etc. Battery life was actually very good. No idle drain and no more overheating. (950 xl) So I think these RS builds are daily driver worthy if you're willing to do clean installs, but not worth looking into otherwise.
  • i hadn't had any issues with my battery in quite a few updates with my 1520, and this most recent one has made my batter, in battery saver mode, drain from 100% to 2% in 6 hours with minimal use. but i can't figure out how to roll back
  • I don't feel like updating my 730. What do you guys think? Is it better than .164 build?
  • Yes.definitely, the groove music bug is gone
  • What bug?
  • Music controls flickering
  • Not completely gone
  • Exactly, while using volume control and changing song while the phone is locked, u can still see "flashing" of your color theme vs your lock screen background.
  • Groove music is one big bug.
  • Stay with .164. RS1 builds are very much in the 'testing' stage.
  • Thanks for the reply Dan. I am holding off for now and continue with x.164 on my NL 1520 - till I see an article / comment from you that RS builds are good for daily driver. WC is the the only place I trust and come for such advise. Thank You!
  • YMMV. I updated to 14291 yesterday, and it has been so far performing pretty well on my Lumia 640. I'm not suggesting that you should only after 24 hers of use on my device. But as Daniel said, RS builds are early, but not as drastically horrible as the first few waves of Win 10 Mobile was. I wanted to test out the new Maps app, as I use that almost everyday, and it's only available on the RS builds.
  • The first two RS1 builds were bad. Many devices couldn't even charge via USB after upgrading. But 14291 is pure gold, no major issues and a drastic improvement.
  • Actually 14291 has been the least stable build for me so far. Phone shuts down multiple times per day and I have to pull the battery out to get it back on. No other method works.
  • are you able to send texts? mine arent going at all
  • I can't, the messaging app crashes my entire phone
  • Sent a text as soon as my 830 turned back on. Working nicely.
  • I have also updated on my lumia 1520, other than Band and somehow my car blutooth stopped syncing all is good.
  • Agreed. .164 has some UI bugs, but it is the best so far in terms of performance.
  • except the battery performance. it was horrible on my device.
  • But worth stating that these RS1 builds are infinitely better.  It's certainly buggy compared to 156.x, but its not a total mess.  You can easily use this on your everyday device(s).   At least, that's been my experience so far.
  • this build is not sending texts, 640XL
  • Will wait a few more RS builds before updating. Posted from Windows Central for Windows 10
Using the Alcatel OneTouch Fierce XL for Windows 10
  • Battery life is bad. Of course, there are some other bugs, but they aren't so serious.
  • It hasn't been on my Lumia 640. Ever switching from my Lumia 1020 (will miss the camera in that device) to a Lumia 640, the overall experience is day and night difference. Battery life is a non-issue on my device.
  • Only been 1 day for me and my 735, but based on 1 day I'd claim battery life to be improved if anything. I hope you would agree 1 day is too little time to make a judgement on battery life.
  • I did a rest and now battery life is superb.
  • Decision has been made. Redstone is not for me at the moment.
  • Yes, better wait, my 730 was almost perfect with 164, now I have  a lot of problems with 14291 but I will give 14295 a chance before downgrading...
  • My 830 went better on 14291. Smoothier, better animations, skipping bug in Groove is gone. But performance may vary between different devices.
  • Did u try the 14295....???
  • Just upgraded. Didn't notice anything different. Expected I guess, since it's a minor update.
  • How's the battery in general and with mobile internet Onn...???
  • I went to build .164 coming from 14291 on my 950 but imma stay on this build. Except a few apps that hang up but don't think they've been updated in a while and heat/eat up my battery. So I'll probably nix those.
  • Update to 14295 if you have a chance. My mom's 640 had some issues opening apps on 291.
  • Forgot to mention that it seems to be fixed on 295. Damn the WC UWP app needs an edit button...
  • i was updated to latest build 2 days back, battery was draining like hell, there was a firmware update shown in WDRM, i installed it but it wiped out all my previous apps, data etc,.... Restore doesn't work if ur phone came with 8.1..... half of the day just took to go back 8.1, update to .107 and .164..... Fear to update to RS now....
  • Gutted that the Band sync issues still haven't been resolved as that's what was preventing me to update to the last build. I can see there's now a more permanent workaround but it seems to come at a bigger cost. Guess I'll be waiting longer then before updating.
  • Working fine on 920. But that's on the last supported version.
  • I still have my 920 but stopped using it after getting a 950 XL. I still have game saves on it so won't be getting rid of it til I've completed them lol.
I also didn't think it was possible to get the RS1 builds on the unsupported devices? So that's probably why yours still works.
  • Lumia 920 is not supported. How did you install the update? Posted via the Windows Central App for Android
  • He/She is talking about 10586.164. One can get Redstone builds by editing two registry entries on an Interop-unlocked device. Posted from Bikini Bottom via my ShellPhone 950 XL
  • @Nicholas Ek Interesting, I may consider doing this for my 1020... I don't suppose you can point to a thread where this hack is discussed in more detail? Any major caveats or gotchas that you're aware of? Don't want to run Fast ring builds on my 950XL... Maybe I'll get a supported device, & leave my 1020 on 10586.164 or WP8.1.
  • If you go to Windows 10 Mobile Development and Hacking on xda-developers, you'll see the thread pinned on the home page. For this build I had to make two extra changes that I have mentioned in a comment below. Posted from Bikini Bottom via my ShellPhone 950 XL
  • You don't even need to Interop-unlock. I used to do the same trick on my 820 and I never managed to unlock it. Same for my 830 when I updated to 14291 on Thursday - one day before the actual release for older phones. Definitely worth the try if I may add. The current Redstone builds are way better than .164. If my 830 feels smoothier with 1429x, I wonder the miracles it could do to older devices that were left out.
  • That's what I thought. No, I heard it could be too dangerous. Posted via the Windows Central App for Android
  • 14295 just finished installing fine on my old 920. The only bug introduced by the registry change is the fact that the camera's flash is set to automatic with no way of changing it. Otherwise it runs okay. No other bugs (other than the known build issues).
I'm not saying you should do it to your phone, but if you know what you're doing and you have got nothing to lose, then it won't hurt. And the way of doing it is neither complicated nor dangerous. I'm quite satisfied with the performance and battery life of that device on Redstone builds. I know I can use WDRT to roll back whenever I want, but so far so good. Posted from Bikini Bottom via my Shell XPS 13
  • Hey Nicholas, Could you please tell me how to update to 14295 on my lumia 920? I used the registry hack to update to 14267.1004 but i'm not able to get it for the last build.
    Greets
  • I made two extra changes: the PhoneHardwareVariant to RM-1085, and the PhoneModelName to Lumia 950, to match the two changes made before.
  • Thanx, it worked.
  • You're welcome. Sent from Bikini Bottom via my Shell iVenue Pro 8"
  • What, to re-pair? You do realize that means re-pair Bluetooth 'pair', not replacing the Band, right? I'm on the 14291 RS build, and set the Language to English UK (I don't mind the 24hr or date format change), and syncing works perfectly. I'm updating to 14295 now to see if I no longer have to do the language workaround to get syncing to work properly.
  • In USA - My Band 2 does not offer English UK.
  • WillBthr he's referring to the workaround where you change your phone's language, not the Band's.
  • Thanks. Yeah, I figured that out. Change Preferences in Health App - Choose your region. UK.
  • The release notes doesn't mention the language work around anymore and instead you have to reset your phone and THEN re-pair your Band for it to work. It's not an "either or" fix where you can just re-pair the Band and it'll work until they fix the issue.
  • Do they mean factory reset? wipeout your data?
  • Yes, factory reset which will clear your data & then re-pair the Band. Not worth it to me personally so I'll just wait.
  • I'm giving it a go, as I have not reset mine for a while so will be nice to have a clean install... and my band 2 back hopefully :)
  • band #1 works for me on this build without workaround or reset
  • Damn I wish mine was, reset phone, had to reset band, losing a week of data and still not working :(
  • Same here. It stinks that the API wasn't fixed for this build but I'm hopeful for the next. I refuse to hard reset and I'm not changing my language so I'll stick with Desktop Sync until the fix is released.
  • My band 2 started working again after installing this build
  • This is nice. Build after build.
  • Just wait for the "build after //Build/" lol +640/Win10
  • I won't be updating until they fix the MS Band sync issue. I'm not up for having to reset my phone at this time.. so I'll wait patiently for a build that does not have this issue.
  • Same boat
  • Seems bugs are hit and miss kn l920 syncs fine with last supported version.
  • It's not hit or miss, it's specific to the latest Redstone builds. Ever since they updated the bluetooth stack to work better with cars, it broke a system api that the Bands use.
  • This build is supposed to fix the syncing issue. You will likely have to Bluetooth re-pair with your phone in order to get syncing back. I have even needed to disable Phone and Text notifications in the Health app, then re-enable just to get those features working again with the 10586 build. I have my Band2 syncing with my Lumia 640 with the 14291 RS build. Had to set the Language to English UK as a workaround (which was fine with me).
  • MS Band works on last redstone build. My phone was set on English US, since redstone update, i've putting language to English UK and now all works. Surprise, the notification center now is working on redstone for all apps.
  • I updated my 950xl this morning and after the update (no clean install or do) I received an update for my Band 2 and now it's syncing properly again.
  • i hope texting has been fixed, was not able to text on 14291
  • K. The issues are irrelevant to me. Btw, Edge in build 14291 suddenly crashes when typing in the address/search bar. Hope it gets fixed in this build.
  • Yes, it does. My screen flickers when I adjust the volume or touch the screen while playing a video in landscape mode.
  • The Gadgets app is completely broken and has been for several builds now. Nothing gets detected and quite often it crashes. You delete unwanted connections and they are still there next time. It's unusable now.
  • I haven't seen that on my Lumia 640. The Gadgets app launches just fine, and even launches Groove Music when my Ford Sync connects to my device for music on the road. Maybe remove and re-install the Gadgets App?
  • Yep, that's how it used to work. Launch Groove with each connection. Very cool. Not now. And it's a core app so uninstallable. Brand new flagship 950XL experience, right here. Posted on a L950XL with Fingers 10
  • Not too many fixes, I suppose battery drainage still happening

  • Have they fixed the message restore in this version.
  • I've been having the damn Band sync issues for so long and I decided to unfortunately reset my band trying to fix it. Lost a month of data and it's still not working. Bleh.
  • Updated to the previous build on my l930, found that band is working if you change language as stated, however there's some other kinks I found. Updated to try out Maps, had to reset phone anyways so why not. I will be updating (all dese updates) to this one, backup and downgrade to slow later tonight
  • do comment about battery performance and overall usability.
  • No access to Store?
  • The next update to the general windows phones( not running on insider) will be another cumulative update or one of the Redstone builds?
  • Maybe you are lucky and someone here has a working crystal ball ;)
  • Obviously a cumulative update. Redstone won't be due for the general public before summer.
  • Using a Lumia 735, and encountered a dilemma. Running build 10586.107, and did not want to install cumulative builds .122 and .164. Now i would like to download these however having been on fast ring all this time, redstone build 14291 is queued telling me to update to that, which I do not want to do. switching from fast to slow ring in order to get the cumulative builds tells me "error, phone it preparing an update"> an update which i DO NOT wanna take, how to do I switch rings and download the cumulative updates???
  • You got to perform a hard reset. There's no other way to stop the update
  • thanks, though I dont want to lose all my app data, whatsapp chats etc... :(
  • Backup ur WhatsApp chats(option in the app settings) and when you install it again, you chats will be restored.
  • Once an update is triggered AND downloaded, you can't avoid it - unless you reset your phone. I'd say to give it a try. 14291 was great on my 830 (now on 14295 which isn't different either way), way better than .164. You were left behind because these cumulative patches were released on Slow and Release Preview rings only - Fast ring is reserved for Redstone builds. If you do not want Redstone builds stay away from the Fast ring after resetting your phone.
  • I am waiting for win 10 and firmware update for Lumia 640 via recovery tool..
  • Yeah still has issues but, is it better than 14291?
  • anyone facing an issue where playing video in landscape mode and touching the screen to seek will result in continuous blinking of screen until it is rotated back to portrait mode? bulid 14291 on Lumia 730.
  • Yes. Even i am facing the same issue on my 640 xl
  • That bug happend to me first on build 14291 and now on 14295 (Lumia 735)
  • Seriously? Man i already installed build 14291 today on my 540 . Now there is another build . Whyyyyyyyyyy ?????? (of course for the glory of w10 mobile , but come on.. Cut some slack )

  • Updating to 14295 now, just hoping my apps work afterwards. I updated my firmware last night. Now I last 20 apps. They just disappeared from my phone and the store.....smh. My list of apps not available is getting ridiculously long.
  • Ugh, really? They STILL haven't fixed the Band syncing issue? 3 builds already...
  • It's a FAST ring build for a reason :)
  • If you have Interop-unlocked your phone, you can apply the Miracast fix that is suggested for PCs.
  • If they know that incorrect IP address in the registry entry is causing the problem, why wouldn't they have fixed it before releasing the build?  That should be about as simple of a change to make as you could have, geez.
  • I don't know how their developmnet cycle works, but I guess the bug is fixed in a later build. Posted from Bikini Bottom via my ShellPhone 950 XL
  • And before someo
