How to open sites that won't work in Edge with IE

Microsoft Edge is Internet Explorer's (IE) successor, and there's no doubt it does a lot of stuff better than the aging browser. IE hasn't been completely forgotten, however, and you might come across some older sites — including those that use ActiveX — that will not function properly in Edge. In these cases, you can easily switch over to IE without leaving Edge.

How to open a web page in Internet Explorer using Edge

When you come across a website that won't load properly in Microsoft Edge, you can most likely get it to work in IE.

  1. Launch Edge from the Start menu, desktop or taskbar.
  2. Navigate to a webpage that won't load.

  1. Click the More button in the top-right corner of the window. (It looks like three dots.)
  2. Click Open with Internet Explorer.

A new IE window will open and display the troublesome web page.

How to pin Internet Explorer to your Start menu or taskbar

Would you rather use IE instead of Edge? It would be beneficial, in this case, to pin it to your Start menu or taskbar for easy access.

  1. Right-click the Start button.
  2. Click Search.

  1. Type Internet Explorer.
  2. Right-click Internet Explorer.
  3. Click a pin option. Choose from:
    • Pin to Start — A tile for IE will appear in your Start menu.
    • Pin to taskbar — A button for IE will show up in your taskbar.

Are you still hanging on to the good old days of IE, or have you accepted Edge? Tell us why in the comments.

  • On windows 10 mobile ??
  • No, only Edge is available on w10m.
  • You can install an alternative browser such as UC Browser or Opera.
  • I guess because of my insider build, monument browser crash, uc browser crash, edge crash sometimes. sadly windows central app upon tapping globe icon does nothing, site fail to open in mobile mode it only opens in desktop mode on edge.
  • Yeah, the Insider Fast builds have been terrible lately with Edge. Sadly, I just cracked the screen on my Elite X3, at $460 to replace, and not wanting to go back to my 950 XL, I'm finally considering leaving Windows Mobile behind :/
  • Great decision. on L950xl, never got taught to invest on another windows device because of lack of MS enthusiasm and well all their employees love iPhone or Samsung.. Going to buy one for myself S8/I8..
  • Yeah I'm possibly going to get an S8 as well. I love Windows 10, but I can't make sense of investing more in the platform until/unless MS realizes the Windows 10 on ARM/mobile vision
  • Great S8 leaks look promising. I like windows 10 that said it isn't optimized as good as android. Even my S3 rooted is way fast on android 7 at many tasks compare to L950xl. Apps(we'll that's totally different problem). Ya I guess at some point they combine windows 10 and say mobile mode like they are using tablet mode right now.
  • Thanks for your Window
  • back to the Future.... oh sorry, back to basics :D #Fail
  • Don't be so hard on yourself
  • I'm a IT technician and i rely on IE daily because Edge is really poor with ECP and Lync CSCP sites. Even certain EOP portals won't work in Edge..... Tch, tch, tch MS.
  • Same job title here, and same problems with Edge. Funny how the majority of MS produced/supported sites don't work in their own, modern, browser
  • +1, and what really annoys me is when i try to work on the move and Edge mobile won't allow me to enter text into the ECP site to manage user emails....
  • Or better off, install Chrome....
  • Here is some universal wisdom. It can be applied to any tech product. If the solution to a problem is to use a different product/program/broswer/etc, then maybe the product you are trying to use isn't the best one. I like Edge alot, but I find myself more and more often having to use Firefox to do things. Please don't make me use Chrome. I am still sad I had to switch to Android from WP.
  • With the latest Insider Preview build I can no longer load Gmail or Youtube in Edge so I have had to use Firefox. It would be better if I could tell Edge to always open a given site in IE, which would keep me in the Edge browser.
  • I have noticed that too, and I dont understand it. The only way i can get them to work it to view them in an InPrivate windows.
  • Same here it drives me absolute nuts! I hope they fix it in the newer builds! The temporary fix for that is to use the inPrivate browsing mode as that works for me.
  • I use Edge on my 950 and PC for almost everything.  Ironically, I had to switch to IE to be able to leave this comment because I couldn't get a cursor in the Reply box using Edge on my PC using Build 15025.  At least YouTube and GMail are working again.
  • I have passed over this menu option this entire time? Man, I must be blind. Thanks WP!
  • I always try out edge with each successive build. If YouTube or Facebook take forever to connect (if at all), then I just go back to using chrome. This had been a problem for about, oh a year or so now - isn't it time you fixed that? Would probably reignite my passion for edge again.
  • What sites don't work in Edge?
  • Logitech's support site for example, enters an infinite loading loop when open in Edge. Other sites like GSMArena automatically initiate save to your computer instead actually displaying in Edge. I've come across several of the above, in which case, I switch to my portable Opera browser.
  • Here's hoping that one day won't need to switch to any other browser to get a website to load. Really liking Edge with uBlock Origins, Tamper Monkey, and Mouse Gestures extensions. So much so, I won't be installing any other browser on my freshly restored Surface Pro. Just have portable Opera (part of my LiberKey) for these situations and when working on someone else's computer (public computer or technical support)...
  • Too funny, I had to open this site in I.E. 11 in order to post this comment. The only problem with opening sites in I.E. 11 is that if you need to use the OneNote Clipper it only works about half (and thats giving it plenty) the time. When I know Im going to need need to use that extension I just unfortunetly use Chrome.
  • The metro IE on W8.1 was great.
