“You can’t edit Office 2019 for Mac after July 13.” Microsoft blames certificates, but critics call it obsolescence

Starting from July 13, 2026, Microsoft will no longer allow you to edit documents in Microsoft Office 2019 for Mac. The company attributes the change to the expiration of the digital certificate for its suite of productivity apps (via JimmyTech).

When your Microsoft Office 2019 for Mac license expires, the apps enter reduced functionality mode. That means you’ll still be able to open, view, and print existing documents in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and OneNote. However, you’ll lose the ability to create new files, edit content, or save changes.

It's worth noting that the change isn't limited to Mac; it cuts across iPhone and iPad apps, too. However, Windows and Android versions will remain unaffected.

In October 2023, Microsoft ended support for Office 2019 for Mac and promised its customers to "rest assured that all your Office 2019 apps will continue to function." But as it now seems, the company is going back on its word. "The fact that Microsoft is using this expiration as a deadline that retires older versions of Office, rather than quietly renewing the certificate, is a choice," added JimmyTech.

The company has since revised the support document to drop the line, and it now reads that the user's data "can be accessed in a supported Microsoft 365 or Office product."

While Microsoft has renewed the productivity suite's certificate, it can only be delivered via a software update. This means that only Microsoft 365 and Office 2021 users are eligible, since Microsoft Office 2019 for Mac hit its end of support in October 2023.

Trying to update or reinstall the software on your device won't resolve the issue. Your best bet is to turn to Microsoft's free Microsoft 365 web apps, get a paid Microsoft 365 subscription, or make a one-time purchase of Office 2024.

It's also worth noting that Office 2021 will only receive updates until October 13, 2026. Once it hits the end of support, Microsoft says the productivity apps will continue to work as expected, but you'll no longer receive any security or feature updates.

This situation reminds me of when Microsoft pulled the plug on Windows 10 on October 14, 2025, leaving millions of users in the lurch. While it provided an extended lifeline for the OS through its Extended Security Updates program, many called it a last-minute snooze button, which only postpones the outcome by one year. Critics branded Microsoft's decision to end support for Windows 10 as planned obsolescence.

Elsewhere, a coalition of European enterprises and community organizations is on the verge of launching Euro-Office. It's a Europe-based, sovereign software-as-a-service (SaaS) designed to rival Microsoft Office and Google Docs, which is slated to ship to general availability on June 9. It will reportedly ship with a familiar user interface that will feel right at home for any Microsoft 365 user. The only difference is that it'll now fall under European governance instead of the US.
