AI video goes corporate — Microsoft 365 Copilot adds OpenAI’s viral Sora 2
Microsoft expanded Copilot with Sora 2, the controversial yet powerful AI video generator.
OpenAI's Sora 2 is now available within Microsoft 365 Copilot. Microsoft announced the integration during its Ignite 2025 conference, which runs throughout this week. Sora 2 brings improved video creation capabilities to Microsoft 365. The tool went viral shortly after launch due to the quality of the clips generated.
Sora 2 can make content much more realistic than the previous version of Sora. The tool has earned both praise and criticism, since AI-generated videos are a controversial topic. Sora 2 supports a "cameos" feature that creates the likeness of a person that can then be placed in content.
Sora 2 launched as an invite-only tool, but there is now another option to use the model. Commercial users who are part of Microsoft's Frontier program can now use Sora 2 within Microsoft 365 Copilot.
Sora 2 in Microsoft 365 Copilot
The addition of Sora 2 to Microsoft 365 Copilot matches a pattern set by Microsoft. Earlier this year, the tech giant added the original version of Sora to Bing Video Creator. Microsoft has largely shifted away from the Bing brand when it comes to AI and made Bing Video Creator part of Copilot recently.
Today's announcement is about Sora 2 coming to Microsoft 365 Copilot, specifically, so the model integrates with the Create experience in supported applications.
Create is available to commercial users in the Frontier program.
Copilot supports short AI-generated clips made using Sora 2. When you make a video project with Copilot, you can use tools for voiceovers, add music, and include elements from your brand kit as well.

AI video minus the "slop"
OpenAI announced Sora 2 last month. The video generator is significantly more capable than its predecessor and pushes the limits of AI video creation. The Sora team at OpenAI shared that it thinks Sora 2 may be the "GPT 3.5 moment for videos."
GPT 3.5 came out in March 2022 and marked a drastic improvement in AI capabilities. Based on early results from Sora 2, I'd say the team from OpenAI chose the correct comparison to highlight the power of the new video creation tool.

Sora 2 can follow detailed prompts and create videos that appear to follow the laws of physics more closely than previous models. Sora 2 also has several new features, such as "cameos" that let you place yourself into AI-generated videos.
The tool can generate some truly impressive videos, as shown by the fake clip of OpenAI's Sam Altman stealing art from Studio Ghibli HQ.
Sora 2 can do things that are exceptionally difficult—and in some instances outright impossible—for prior video generation models: Olympic gymnastics routines, backflips on a paddleboard that accurately model the dynamics of buoyancy and rigidity, and triple axels while a cat holds on for dear life.

The launch of Sora 2 coincided with the release of the Sora app on iOS.
Several major tech companies are pushing the limits of AI-generated videos. Meta released "Vibes" in September, and Google unveiled its Gemini-powered Nano Banana in the same month.
