Xbox One owners can now play 10 more Xbox 360 games on the console. The new list includes The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings which will be free to download for both Xbox 360 and Xbox One owners in U.S., Canada, United Kingdom, France and Germany until Feb. 5.

Here's the full list of new Xbox 360 games that can be played on the Xbox One:

  • The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings
  • Sam & Max Save the World
  • Aegis Wing
  • Counter-Strike: GO
  • Age of Booty
  • Space Giraffe
  • Soulcalibur
  • Skullgirls
  • Jeremy McGrath's Offroad
  • Small Arms

Microsoft also announced a change in how they will be adding new Xbox 360 games to the Xbox One backwards compatibility list from now on:

"Starting today, we'll release titles as they become available, rather than a set monthly launch date. What this means for you is that you won't have to wait to find out the latest titles; we'll release whatever is available, when they're available, once each title has received the engineering and publisher stamp of approval."

Update: Microsoft has now updated its blog post to reflect that The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings is now free in all regions except for Japan until February 5.

  • Awesome! Witcher 2 is great. It's great that the XB1 supports massive external storage. Love having a massive collection in one spot without having to micro manage.
  • Full of arcade games cept the witcher 2. C'mon Microsoft where the I wanna-play games at?
  • Don't call MS out on this, point question to dev/pub of games you want. MS cant make games BC without consent from dev/pub. Unless you mean ms' own games then that'd a different matter.
  • couldnt have said it better :)
  • Uhh...4 Gears of War games, both Rainbow Six Vegas games, Halo Reach, Assassin's Creed 2, Fallout 3, Just Cause 2, Borderlands, Fable 2 and 3, 2 Viva Pinata games. None of those are arcade games. Yes, there's a lot of smaller stuff few care about, but at least aim for a statement with less hyperbole.
  • To clarify, is this free for all users or just those with Gold?
  • all
  • Whoa!!!!
  • I'll be loading this on mine ASAP. Still can't help but hope we start seeing some more obscure greats like Lost Odyssey.
  • Is Skyrim one yet? Posted via the Windows Central App for Android
  • and Bioshock Infinite that was promised for December
  • Burnout Paradise...
  • Waiting for Black Ops, and hoping it spurs further COD titles!
  • Would love to get all the CoD titles from Xbox 360 onwards on a single system - Most of them would be worth playing through the campaigns again for sure.
  • Didn't they give the impression Black Ops compatability was going to be available by now? Delaying things seems to be part of Microsoft's culture now it seems, or maybe they just need to just keep quiet.
  • They never gave any date. I don't think they even mentioned it. But it was prominently displayed in a photo on one of the backwards compatibility update pages.
  • Bioshock was promised IN December, and NOT FOR December. Don't misinform people, please.
  • awesome, like that helps in any way. Last time ive checked I'm not a source from xbox or msft that my statements have to be 100% accurate, don't like my posts, well don't f*cking read them.
  • I was considering making an app that lists all the BC games, and uses camera to scan bar codes, so you can check while in GAME or GAMESTOP, or other, if the 360 game is BC. But I don't know how. Anyone else like the app idea and want to run with it?
  • If Skyrim was one, it would have already been a big deal and they would tell us in a separate article.
  • Sweet
  • > Age of Booty
  • Sounds like an adult title.
  • It's quite fun.
  • That smell,smell
  • I'm getting "Offer not vaild in your region" for The Witcher 2 in Germany. oO
  • Same for UK
  • Possibly still rolling out to the different markets.
  • Just search for it in your own regional store, it says free. Trying to get it from the link in the article does not work. But it will if you just search your own regional store after logging in.
  • I definitely think releasing as they are done is the smart decision. As is, they build up anticipation and then everyone is disappointed when the list finally comes because it's usually one decent title and 10 mediocre arcade offerings. I don't understand why publishers aren't eager to sell their old games to Xbox One owners... seems like it would be a win for them. There only reason I can think of is when they plan a special edition or redo... but it doesn't seem like many of those come out for anything but top series. I would happily buy and replay a bunch of Call of Duty games. Seems like ms needs to enable buying 360 titles from the One asap though... maybe that's holding some publishers back?
  • I think most developers are on extremely tight deadlines 24x7 and have well established roadmaps. As much as the money would be nice, they have more pressing requirements.
  • As far as I remember devs/publisher don't need to do anything except permit MS to flick the switch for that game.
  • Exactly. They basically just have to agree to offer it and ms does the rest. But many of them seem very reticent to do so.
  • I'd also like to say how cool it is the ms are giving away the cool title from the list this time! That's pretty awesome... I debate purchasing Witcher 3 every time it goes on sale... now I can try the second and see if I like the style.
  • Go to Gamestop. Get a pre-owned one. You have 7 days to return for full refund. I played witcher 3 for a few days and brought it back. It's a great game im just not into the type of game. Runescape was my enemy when ppl were playing that lol.
  • I don't have the discs now, and I probably wouldn't bother getting them used and having them clutter up the place...But I'd likely re-buy them digitally at a decent price to have all of the console CoD games in one place. It's been a while since I play a good WW2 game, and some of the older CoD games would still hold up to this day
  • Yeah it would be nice if not only they offered it on xb1 but also option to buy digital. Id gladly buy pinballfx just for the extra achievements for example
  • The comments here are much more positive than on reddit's Xbox one sub. There is a giant whiny shitstorm over there lol
  • There's still time!
  • It will be interesting to see if game by game announcements lessens that, or if it just gives them more opportunities to shitstorm more frequently.
  • For once, the WC comments section doesn't have the biggest number of whiners..? That's got to be a first!
  • *sigh* My wait for Halo Was continues. I still play it on my Xbox 360 almost every day, even as we approach seven years after its release. It'd sure be nice to play it on my Xbox One so I didn't have to boot up the 360 and change inputs on the TV. :-)
  • Buy another tv and go insane trying to play both at once. What fun is life if you don't challenge yourself
  • Given the issues Halo Reach had it's probably worth waiting until Microsoft is sure they didn't break something.
  • That is perhaps one of the two most unsettling things about the backwards compatibility program so far: it seems that whatever emulator they created to do this needs to be tweaked for each game individually. Back at E3 they made it sound like all that needed to be done was for them to get publisher approval and they could just 'flip a switch' and the game would work. Clearly, that is not the case, which means that Microsoft is apparently investing (some would say, wasting) some serious resources into bringing each title to the program, one by one. The second unsettling thing is the slow pace of games being added. At this rate they're adding, on average, ten games per month. This means that it'll take a decade to get even close to adding the majority of Xbox 360 games to Xbox One. And all for what? For a tiny number of people who may play a few games they already own and an even tinier number of people who may buy these Xbox 360 games for the first time (I'm one of them, by the way). All in all, this is looking like a huge waste of human resources. They'd be better off just releasing an Xbox Complete console that has the hardware of all three Xbox consoles in it so that it can just run all previous games out of the box. No licensing issues, and it makes the people who actually want backwards compatibility actually pay for it, rather than having all of us subsidize when those resources could be better spent improving Xbox in other ways (like adding back in Kinect gestures, which they already spent the resources developing).
  • I don't think it is anywhere as difficult as this to make the games backwards compatible.
If I were to speculate, the real bottleneck is the approval of the game IP owners. A huge portion of the porting process would be automated -- the total number of titles available so far certainly does not suggest a 'one-by-one' code tweaking approach. If the entire Gears of War franchise can be done, any other game from the 360 can be done. Certainly they pass the original through some analysis engines, but my guess is a largely automated process not significantly hogging time resources of critical development teams...
  • The fact that Halo Reach individually suffered performance issues in backwards compatibility and had to be tweaked to improve the performance, as well as the really slow pace of adding games, along with the admission they need more time to be 'tested', implies a one-by-one necessity.
  • Doesn't mean that per se. I'm sure just like with video card drivers which are released with specific game optimizations under the hood, it was probably more of a "Halo did things in a bit of a different way than we were expecting" so they tweak it based on those edge cases. I don't think individual tweaks is the norm.
  • One man's Kinect gestures are another man's Backwards Compatibility
  • Indeed, the difference here, though, is that many people bought Day One Xbox Ones because they had Kinect gestures. In contrast, no one bought a Day One Xbox One because it had backwards compatibility (because it didn't). Yet, Microsoft decided to steal away the former feature from people who made purchasing decisions based on it. That's rubbish.
  • Coip I think you're missing one of the biggest reasons MS is doing BC. Its a nice bonus for those that already have an XB1 but its even more attractive to those that have yet to move on from their 360. MS are now able to promote that the XB1 is BC compatible with 360 games, obviously followed by a little asterisk stating 'select titles only'. There's a huge number of potential XB1 owners out there that are already hooked on MS's platform and IP but held off making the upgrade due to the consoles' terrible launch and numerous articles questioning its power/performance in comparison to the PS4. BC provides a value proposition that PS4 does not have.
  • Inability to play the 360 games we love and still play is one reason why we still don't have a One. Maybe someday...
  • I'm not overlooking that. I am one of those people (Xbox One owner who never owned an Xbox 360), and so I am looking forward to finally getting a chance to play some of the gems I missed out on before. But people like me (those who didn't own a 360 and will choose to buy 360 games instead of newer One games) are likely a tiny part of Xbox One owners, and the BC rollout has been disappointing so far. It has been 6 months since they announced it and only like 130 games or so are available and there pace has been slow. Plus, the games I realm want to play (Kinect games) will never come.
  • Hi coip, not sure if you are the guy that used gestures on the One, before they made the dashboard change. I know there was somebody on here that frequently lamented their removal. Shame MS can't have an option for gestures, seems like it wouldn't take too many resources to have them work something out. Never nice to see a feature pulled. For me, I miss the ability to turn vibration off in system options. Basic feature that was removed.
  • Lol dlc is another compatibility issue
  • You can always plug your 360 into the one
  • I've tried that, but controller lag makes anything unplayable.
  • So you don't use the HDMI-IN on the xbox one why?
  • Me too!!! I love Halo Wars!!
  • Regret buying ps4
  • Nah, don't regret buying that. Plenty of good games on it. Just buy an X1 too. Then you get like 80% of ALL the good games.
  • My PS4 just sits there, being used as a hideously expensive USB charger for phones and stuff. Theres just no reason to use it much, as all good games are multiplatform or xbox only.  God knows why the thing outsells xbox by so much unless its the utter FUD that sony still perpetuate.
  • Lol yeah the ps3 era ip's are starting to get stale where's game franchises like twisted metal
  • PS4 sold heaps because it offered a simple choice to PS3 owners "Want more of what you loved on the PS3 only faster and better looking? Then buy a PS4!"
MS's approach was way more confusing. "We're going to change the way you play, purchase and engage with your games and provide you with a range of services and functionality you never knew you wanted" to which most consumers responded "Will it be as fast and as good looking as the PS4?"
  • Exactly, and the answer was "no".
  • Only problem is that I still don't want the vast majority of the services and functionality on offer.
  • Soul Calibur!
  • This^^^
Now I can lay my dreamcast to rest for good! :-)
  • Not yet, there is still no Seaman port...
  • Alan Wake Portal 2
  • Seconded
  • Glad they're changing it from monthly to rolling, but that list is AWFUL. I grabbed the free copyof The Witcher 2, though I'm 99% sure I'll never bother playing it.
  • The whole system is massed up. Just look at rewards program. From the start Xbox One digitally oriented console offers you 15000 credits which is $15 if you preorder 3 games from xbox one store but if you preorder physical copy from https://www.windowscentral.com/e?link=https2F%2Fclick.linksynergy.co... you will get 15000 credits ($15) per game. How is that make any sense? maybe somebody can explain it to me? I love direction that Phil Spencer takes Xbox team, but sh*t like that just drives me nuts.
  • I never thought I'd get there, but I'm now at the point where I buy digital even if it costs more. It's just so convenient, and I never have to worry about a scratched or lost disc. I think this is what they're selling... convenience. And I'm willing to pay for it.
  • Am I the only one who has never lost or scratched a disc? Ever since the Sega CD this has never been a thing. Digital is more convenient sure, and maybe that is worth it for some, but you do have to get up sometimes, right? I only get digital if there is a sale...
  • Look at that as if you would use old cassette player compared to an iPod (for example). That how I see disk based games compared to digital. Even though before Xbox One I was a disk hoarder lol
  • Trust me I am probably the only one who was happy about DRM because I could buy games cheap on amazon, install them and wont bother using the disk ever again and I'm all for digital games, that is the future of everything eventually, super convenient and loss/damage proof. I do buy games digitally all the time and buy disk when there's a huge difference in price either from amazon or gamefly, but what they have there is just not fair. I want to buy digital games and be rewarded at least equally as if I bought disk based games. Its just not fair man.
  • Costs more to sell a physical copy than a digital one. More risk and overhead with a disc, therefore more of a reason to incentivize it.
  • No that's more reason not to. Put those incentives on digital and more people would buy digital eventually there would be less demand for disc and more profit
  • They need to move the discs though. If they don't move, they lose the money in making them. If it moves very quickly from the get-go that's better than eventually selling it for $10, which happens a *lot* sooner than with digital which stays at the release price a lot longer. digital is virtually all gravy. the overhead cost is minimally variable (its mostly the same no matter how many people buy it), so it can almost be treated as a fixed cost that will be spread amongst every digital copy sold, which brings the overhead cost to almost zero if they sell enough. there's minimal risk because they don't have to make a bunch in advance and hope they sell. all in all, it's in MS's best interest to move the discs as soon as possible.
  • Same here Poddie. In my case it was a bit of laziness too... Didn't want to change discs every time I wanted to play something else. Digital is WAY more helpful...
  • I've never scratched or lost a disc, but with all the Games with Gold and the odd decent game going on sale for a fair price towards the end of last year, my digital Xbox One collection is growing and I'm getting more hooked on Digital downloads over physical disks (I've used Digital on PC since Steam first came about, but less so on consoles due to cost...Steam doesn't really have that same problem and has amazing sales that Xbox so far hasn't even came near) The convenience does tempt me to go digital, even if the cost is a little higher, up to a limit. If it was £10 difference I'll usually just get it on disc - The convenience is nice but there's no need to throw money away
  • "The convenience is nice but there's no need to throw money away" That's how I feel. It's cool and all, but 60 bucks a pop adds up fast and next gen you won't be able to play the games. If you had the disc, at least you'll get something for it vs the sunk cost of going digital. I've spent close to like 200 worth of games on the PS3. Now, I can't play them unless I have a PS3, which I do not. The only thing worth spending money on digitally for me is Music and Ultraviolet movies. Games seemed destined to obsolescence once a new gaming system comes out.
  • See, theres people, like myself, that wont sell games for lower price for couple of reasons as not wanting to loose money and because that game is just not worth selling for that low, thus me personally, I only buy games for full price that are worth $60 in a long term and have a high replayability ( I don't think that the actual word lol) and I wait for other games to drop in price.
  • I live in a 2 Xbox Ones household and the game sharing feature using digital copies is a huge money saver if you are looking to play online with a friend or my case gf in the same house without having to pay $120 for 2 games.
  •   couldn'tagree more, just wish there was some sort of trade in/ upgrade system that you can upgrade your disk game to digital. would make my life so much easier. Its already mostly online anyway, so once you load up a disk game, and get the digital version, the license is valid for say 2 months after which you need to re-reun the disk again te re-license it for another 2 months. That way you can get 2nd hand games ( which the developer / publisher ) dont get any money from anyway, but can tack on a DRM license to make more money even after the game has been sold. i reckon 90% of the userbase would take up this offer
  • After they cancelled DRM I honestly hoped they would leave that as an option, like "here you don't like DRM use it like it was on 360, but if you choose to use it, click here and there and never use your disk again. That would be a good decision to satisfy both parties.
  • My gut feeling is they're trying to get the people that buy physical copies to go all in digital. They already have you buying digital, so no incentive needed for you.
  • If thats the case they need to make the digi versions cheaper.  There is no justification of the digi download to start and remain significantly higher priced than the disc version.  There are no production or shipping costs, just a few cents of cost for the bandwith used, and yet they are ALWAYS hideously more expensive.
  • I think they're in a bit of a hard spot... they still want disc sales because GameStop is huge and powerful, and you don't want them to be forced out of the loop or you'll lose system sales. So I think they're still testing the waters a bit and trying to have a toe in both worlds. They don't want to force you into one or the other... yet.
  • The genius part about that particular reward is that you cannot preorder games from the Australian Microsoft Store, so the only decent reward Punch Card that I was interested in utilising I can't. That being said the rewards system isn't that great here anyway because are so cheap in store that any kind of benefit offered never seems to justify the exorbitant initial price tag. I just tend to get my little bonuses every now and then from the money I spend on discounted/new indie titles and any DLC i may pick up.
  • Its a great game, your loss
  • Do keep in mind that if your game isn't on the list to ask the developer, higher the demand is better to help MS get the "yes" approval. No need to bash Microsoft for it since we just flip a switch for back compat when there's a green light received.
  • I can understand 3rd Party Developers but why aren't all the First Party AAA Titles not a Day one Addition to the list. I mean there isn't a single Forza game on the list and Turn10 is an in House Studio. Again I am grateful for the service but thats one question that doesnt seem to add up.
  • Because all the bollocks about "simply flicking a switch" clearly isn't entirely true. Even most the Halo games aren't available, this started as a dream come true and has ended up being a joke.
  • Woot
  • Looking forward to getting Witcher 2. Never have played a Witcher game b4. However, I don't know when I will find the time. Fallout 4, Gears Ultimate, Dragon Age Inquisition, Deus X.....now Witcher 2...man my plate is full XBox!
  • Witcher 2 is challenging, but after you try Witcher 3 you will love CD Project Red forever lol
  • Nope, didn't find that at all.  I guess I just had no interest in the story and the game itself just turned into a slashy boring chore with so little to do given the large size of the gaming area.
  • So little to do? Are you just trying to be contrarian?
  • It took me, no joke, close to 350 hours to complete story mode plus close to half of side quests and I'm still not done. So yeah almost "nothing" to do.
  • See, it is complete opposite for me. All games are repetitive to the point, you cant say it is games downside or annoyance. All games you run, jump, climb, shoot, hit etc. just areas and enemies change. So I guess it was just not your type of game.
  • I'm almost afraid to play Witcher 3 becuz of the time you need to dedicate to it. I've heard on podcasts and online how amazing the game is, but also the problem with repetition. One other thing that pertains to me...... the fact I abhor crafting. I have little time as it is and i don't have time to fiddle with it. I'll play Witcher 2, if I like it I'll get 3.
  • The only thing you will be crafting a lot are bombs and potions, I've tried to craft weapons and armor but stopped that since loot drop was so much better that I had no need in that. But you shouldn't compare 2nd and 3rd since they are different in the way that 3rd is a huge open world. And it is not as repetitive as people say, there are plenty of variety to keep you entertain for a long time, especially since they've fixed so much since day 1 and you should start playing soon before 2nd DLC comes out, otherwise you would have to forget about outside world for some time in order to beat it hahahahaha
  • Me too.  I have so many games now I just don't have the time to get to them.  Well we will never not have anything to play right :)
  • Agreed. I need to wall off my man cave and take a month of leave to catch up. Quantum Break is coming out soon and Tom Clancy's new game looks pretty cool. WTH am I suppose to do?
  • The soul still burns, almost 17 years later!
  • Any ideas if Force Unleashed games might ever make it? Or unlikely because of Disney sale? They were on sale recently, so someone still cares a little at least... and they do offer a huge bundle of all old games on Steam.
  • Mass Effect 3 :(
  • Yes! Need this and the second. I still play this trilogy heavily.
  • hahahaha great :D! Polish game not free in Poland? Only by MS :)
  • Now is available also in Poland :D
  • SKATE 3 already!!!
  • THIS
  • FYI...Aegis Wing is free also.
  • Wasn't that always free?
  • What about the rest of the countries? Are they not receiving the games for free?
  • Unfortunately they're not. MS says "yes i am opening stores for you but you're still rubbish." There is no solid reason. Xbone can run any region's xbox 360 game.
  • give me Battlefield 1943, I never had more fun in a game than that one on Xbox.  It's just... perfect?  It's just a riot to play and I cannot find that same spirit in other games...
  • Need the Forza games.  I'm only 1,500 points away from the next reward tier.
  • Yes! Come on MS, give us your own exclusives to us!
  • How do I get the game??? Posted from my awesome BlackBerry Passport
  • You get it here (US link): https://www.windowscentral.com/e?link=https2F%2Fclick.linksynergy.co... I tried getting it on the UK site (where I am) but it shows as "Bundle Only" at the moment, and I get an error about the offer not being in my region using the URL above
  • Same here.  I'm so freaking sick of this geoblocking crapola!
  • Same here, too. Thinking whether changing the region would help.
  • When I try to purchase it .. Give me this "the transaction encrypted"
  • Skate 3 :/
  • I still have my Day One Dreamcast and Soul Caliber. The Legend Never Dies.
  • Cool!:D
  • Ok come on! Where the **** is skate 3? They said it was ready months ago, I paid for it on the marketplace, and still nothing? Seriously. Wtf.
  • Not available in france
  • Now that we have established that the Xbox One hypervisor can emulate an Xbox360, when will I be able to use my Xbox One as  Media Center Extender? Lol!
  • Aegis Wing and Jeremy McGrath's Offroad are also FREE
  • Oops, my bad.  Just Aegis Wing is Free.
  • Can't seem to find Aegis Wing on the UK/GB Xbox site - was it never released over here?
  • Nope, US only.
  • Have Witcher 2 for 360, digital, but not showing up in ready to install... Aren't they live yet? :O Also latest preview update on the console...
  • Anyone got that link to game priority voting site?
  • I really think there is something planned with the Bioshock games and why we have not seen them yet.  Either a remaster is being done or they will give the bioshock games free with the new one when it comes out. The game is in development but who knows how long until its released.  Curious to see what direction the new one will go in.   Same could be said for Skyrim.  Perhaps the next Elder Scrolls game will come with bc Skyrim. New Mass Effect could come with bc Mass Effect 2 and 3.  Just figuring it may go this way since Fallout 3 became bc with Fallout 4.  Time will tell.
  • C'mon Ubisoft give me my ghost recon!
  • Heck what about the whole series also Splinter Cell Hawx Endwar etc. Posted via the Windows Central App for Nexus 5x
  • FORZA FORZA FORZA FORZA FORZA!!!!! I WANT TO PLAY THE ORGINAL HORIZON!!!!! FIRST PARTY TITLES SHOULD BE A NO BRAINER DAY ONE ADDITION!!!! FEED MY NEED FOR SPEED
  • So I take it that this isn't actually coming to the UK then.....Still showing as not valid in my region ;) EDIT: okay, so it works from the following link now, which wasn't working before: https://www.windowscentral.com/e?link=https2F%2Fclick.linksynergy.co...
  • Thanks for the link. Following the blog link directly netted me with "Sorry: This offer is not valid in your region.". Not sure why as I don't live in Japan.
  • Generous..
  • Skate 3
  • I have no desire to play yesterday's games when there are so many great new games.
  • great another free game.
  • Why no Japan?
  • Screw Japan. They're XB haters and PS fanboys... Hard
  • Too bad.
  • Here's the thing, I will be affected by this Japan not getting Xbox deals since I'll be moving to Japan. Next year hopefully. Microsoft will need to get on board with that or they risk alienating me from Xbox.
  • Where, Bioshock, where?
  • How do I download it for free? I'm in Canada, btw...
  •   Waiting for GTA IV, love playing this one
  • Update: Excluding Hungary as well (just tried and it said my region is not supported)
  • Thats awesome, i wonder if they could make it work on PC or the new Lumia X that be awesome
  • https://www.windowscentral.com/e?link=https2F%2Fclick.linksynergy.co...
  • Working in UK but need the above link for our region. Just Bing it and found it.
  • Mate, you're the best. That link is the only thing working and I could get Witcher 2 at last. Thanks.
  • I don't know why but I can't get the witcher 2 : on Xbox one it says I can't buy it, and on X360 it says I have to go to Xbox one... Posted via the Windows Central App for Android
  • What "engineering"? Thought they said it was a simple switch after the developers had consented.
  • Only one that sounded good was witcher 2
  • Castlevania: SotN? When!?
  • Lol, my fiancé described the controls for The Witcher 2 as you needed to be a non human with 7 fingers on each hand and the combat is just not worth it, set 10 traps and have the enemy walk into them
  • When I try to purchase it .. Give me this "the transaction encrypted"
    Any help for this problem??
  • Why cant I redeem my 360 games on xbox.com without giving credit card info? I have almost $50 on my MS account and the game is free... this doesn't make any sense!
  • Where are the good games? Who do we have to blast on twitter?
  • How do you download witcher 2?
