Facebook Messenger for Windows 10 PC now live in the Windows Store
published

As promised earlier today, the Windows 10 PC version of Facebook Messenger is now live for everyone in the Windows Store, following a closed beta test.
The launch follows the official release of Facebook for Windows 10 PCs and Instagram for Windows 10 Mobile.. Here is how Facebook describes the new Messenger app:
Along with many of your favorite Messenger features – like stickers, group conversations and GIFs – Messenger for Windows has native desktop notifications that make your experience richer and more complete. You also can see when you have messages waiting for you with a Live Tile.

WP User- Hey bro Android User- Hi WP User- I'm very happy today Android User- Why? WP User- Today, Developer released messenger & facebook app for windows 10. Android User- What about Windows Phone? WP User- For wp, it's coming later this year Android User- Oh! That's means NEVER or After 2-3 years. WP User- Maybe :'( Android User- Don't cry bro
-
Lol! Windows phone
-
Android user:- when I would get to use YouTube app without ads.
Windows user:- Never. Now cry Bro. -
Hahahaha
-
Yeah, cause how dare the video creators try and get paid for their work!
-
Yea no
-
The video creators on you tube don't get paid from those ads, just google does. In most cases, they aren't passing it along to the video creators. Posted from Windows Central for Windows 10
-
lol, wrong
-
Android user: Well I can always use YouTube AdAway.
-
Yeah, just install more crap that disables other crap that disturbes another crap, that is already bloated and needs bigger and bigger updates every 2 days... and so on, and so on...
-
Odd - I'm seeing Messenger in Windows 10 Mobile store. It's not the latest version - but it's still there and works.
-
Yes I can too, and I have it installed. It's the 8.1 version Posted from Windows Central for Windows 10

"works" is a relative term. The 8.1 version was a stripped back version without major features at the time it came out, never mind now. I love the windows 10 desktop Facebook and messenger apps, so I'm looking forward to them crossing over to mobile soon. :)
-
Bad example. Facebook Messenger works quite well on WP and is available now. But we can go through thousands of good examples, including Facebook app per se.
-
Depends on what you define "quite well" as. It's worked pretty poorly on all my windows hones. It's badly optimized, and eats battery like there's no tomorrow.
-
"You missed a call from android user."
WP user: What? How to call!? -
That makes no sense. Posted from Windows Central for Windows 10
-
Hope they bring it to Mobile soon!
-
FB Messenger is needed more on Mobile than Desktop.
-
True that!
-
Still works great on desktop used the fb app and the messenger they work great!!! :)
-
And even on desktop its aweful! GIF interface is unusable, no video calling.
-
Also resizing is horrible too.
-
Video calling is mention on future update of the app
you know like it didnt exist on messenger either it needs time to do it :3 -
so preverbial "coming soon"
-
I wonder if it is delayed because of the ability to do audio/video calls via mobile.....
-
#truth
-
Roll back to WP8.1, you have it xD
-
It is on mobile. I use it on my 950 all the time. Don't get why everyone acts like it's not on Mobile. It's been there for a while now.
-
I think they're talking about the new W10 version. :)
-
The 8.1 version does work well. Even though I'm looking forward to the W10 version on Mobile the all that's already there is reliable and has been for ages
-
I'd like the full-on Win 10 version on mobile, some day soon, so I can quickly reply to messages from the action centre without having to open up the full app.
-
It works well, but it's a bit embarassing when someone says "what do you think of the new chat colour?" and you're like "what chat colour?" because you're two years behind everyone else in terms of updates. There are lots of features absent from the version we currently have.
-
I'm build 10586.218 (PC Version) and Messenger isn't working! Can't input email/phone to login.
#FAIL -
This is tottaly true Posted via the Windows Central App for Android
-
I think they are gonna make it available for Mobile too, since I can see my review for the WP8.1 app in the Windows 10 Store. Posted from Windows Central App for Windows 10 on Lumia 950
-
They already said they are. For now, there's the old app.
-
33 updates? That's a lot!
-
This is great but I'm struggling to see why Messenger is a 71mb download! Sent from my HP Spectre running Windows 10
-
Check messenger for iPhone and you will be surprised
-
Yep, don't get surprise how Facebook apps are bloated in terms of app size. Especially on small internal storage Android devices back in the days, Facebook can easily eat your app partition by 15%, and you cant even moved it onto SD card. Sent from Turing Machine
-
I'm struggling to see how that matters at all. People here can really turn every news into something negative. Never ceases to amaze me.
-
What's the deal? Is it that hard to spare 70mb on a computer?
-
The HP Spectre isn't already launched, no ? I mean, do you use the Spectre X3 phone which will be launched this summer ?
-
Spectre is a line of high-end mobile devices. Not a single product. Look up the HP Spectre x360.
-
78.1 to be precise.. Humongous! Posted from Windows Central app, Built for Windows 10.
-
And later in this year we will have Universal messenger app ....
-
No, Facebook seems intent on using their own cross-platform tools (OSMeta).
-
Which I am very glad to see in action with these 3 apps they released today.
-
They have major issues with tablet made. FB app not taking up all the screen or resting properly in orientation ration switches. Its with that plus content getting stuck in middle of screen when you close the on screen keyboard in messenger. Uninstalled after < 5 minutes. They are too beta for my use.
-
And. I was addressing his claim (with no basis/reasoning) that they'll morph into UWP later this year.
-
Could the text scaling on this be any smaller on PC, jesus h...
-
... Sánchez?
-
How is this universal if its not on mobile?? Posted from Windows Central for Windows 10
-
Its not a universal app. Its ported by tool by facebook team :/ Posted via Windows Central App for W10M on Lumia 830
-
No it's OSMeta. Facebook's own cross-platform tools.
-
Well they used this tool to port Instagram, they could just do the same with Facebook and Messenger.
-
Instagram is also OSMeta.
-
and the results are ****.
-
That's what they did here.
-
Well it's packaged as a UWP app before publishing to the store (That OSMeta converts to) but UWP doesn't mean available on all device types, don't know how many times "UWP" needs to be explained. Apps that say Designed for Windows 10 are UWP and can use the associated APIs
-
Great. But how to scroll through GIF's? :D Posted with the Windows Central app for Windows 10 on HP 250 G1 notebook. It is a scary old monster, I think :D
-
you want too much. It took them 4+ years to crappily port the app to W, wait another 4 for it to be decent...
-
So you can't scroll trough Gifs or emoticons... I'm a little bit disappointed. Why did they use their ****** porting tool instead of islandwood? :D Posted with the Windows Central app for Windows 10 on Lumia 535
-
What are you on about bloke?? I scroll through GIFS and Emoticons just fine???
-
emoticons are fine, but how do you scroll through gifs?
-
When I click the GIF button there's a scroll bar right on it and I can scroll right through...but yeah I just realized you were talking about conversation emojis which, as you stated cannot be scrolled through. Big deal? Not really. I can just go to Web and get all the features working.
-
But if you have to go to web to get any feature working, than what's the point of the app? :D Posted with the Windows Central app for Windows 10 on Lumia 535
-
How??? I'm speaking about when you want to insert a gif into the conversation with the "gif burton" or you want to change the emoticon of the conversation. Scrolling just doesn't work. I tried it with the mouse wheel, or by dragging it with a mouse but none of them works.
Yeah, stickers work, and can be scrolled. But these... Posted with the Windows Central app for Windows 10 on Lumia 535 -
use touch and it works
-
Thanks. And what if... My laptop doesn't have a touchscreen at all? :D Posted with the Windows Central app for Windows 10 on Lumia 535
-
Great day for apps! I'm hungry for more though!
-
Yeah! I can't wait to have this on my phone too ^_^
-
I am having problem with Facebook app which was updated today. It was working earlier but now crashes while starting. Anyone else having this problem?
-
Nope working fine for me
-
Nah its good for me
-
Mine never worked.... Still trying to open it. Nope, no chance! Aproved by me!
-
Me too, What is the solution ?
-
if this apps are universal, why they aren't on mobile yet?
-
I think you need to read up on UWP before making comments like this. Knowledge is power.
-
With great power comes great responsibility. Ignorance is bliss! Posted from my Lumia 950
-
so, explain me Einstein.
-
The problem with that is so many people are unaware that I would constantly be explaining to them when they can do their own research.
-
I explain too often to people that "UWP" or "UWA" and "Universal apps" don't mean 'available on all device types' I think I'll take a page out of your book and leave people to it. WC and their authors have also explained it multiple times but somehow people don't get it.
-
Do you see any new app on your phone now??? I am not... It is not universal yet. It's shame of MS and Facebook... They have to have this app done in release of win 10!!!
-
*yawn*
-
This is a universal apps no matter which platforms the developers choses to target. Posted from Windows Central for XL
-
Exactly, but some people will never get it
-
UWP still requires a small effort from the developer to make it work across form factors. Facebook focused on Desktop as that's where the majority of Windows 10 users are, now the desktop version is in the wild they can focus their efforts on polishing the mobile version. Posted from my Lumia 950
-
Well that's true of all Windows 10 apps which are Universal by Nature. This one was created with Facebook's own cross-platform conversion tool. It may not have all the shared binaries that uwp has
-
I want it for mobile so bad, current Messenger is a pain in the ...
-
No calling feature on messenger.
-
Horrible: - No responsive UI
- Rounded corner and more globaly that's an iOS design, not windows
- UI is laggish
- Mouse back button acts like a left click
- Keyboard back button not supported
- ... -
Well, you can, at least, use it. In my pc does not even open:)) Aproved by me!
-
Is it still lacking the ability to create an account without being on Facebook?
-
It's Facebook Messenger, so...
-
They'd made it possible on Ios/Android devices to log in without needing a FB account, but that never seemed to happen for Windows Mobile.
-
Wait how? I got iOS and Android device but I wasn't aware of this? Sent from Turing Machine
-
I just looked it up and there does appear to have been a way to do it. It doesn't seem ideal for a couple of reasons: 1. In the name avoiding Facebook, people are going to sign up with their mobile number AND give access to Contacts?
2. The only Contacts it looks like you will be able to Messenger with are people who have given a phone number to Facebook that matches the one you have in your Contacts. For me, no one would be able to connect with me because I don't have my phone number listed on my Facebook profile. I'm curious as to why this is preferable to just making an account, even if you don't use it. It can't really be about being more "secure" since you are giving away your mobile number and access to the Contacts in your phone. Is it just a general soapbox hatred of Facebook? If so, then why have any of their stuff? -
I was curious about whether the ability had been added; nothing to do with Facebook hate whatsoever.
-
You would think these apps would now be showing on the front page of the store.
-
They've only just come out
-
Features missing no Audio and Video calling and can't send sound clips (not the recordes one)
-
Where is promised Universal Windows app???... Or they mean universal without phone??? I am fed up with COMING SOON!!!
-
Gather the pitch forks!
-
lol the 10 of you left on Mobile are sure vocal about it :P
-
Yeah......
-
That wasn't necessary
-
Why the downvotes, that was pretty funny
-
Bahahahaha good one. Posted via the Windows Central App for Android (5x or V10)

toast notifications don't seem to be working
-
Don't like the position of emoji it's upside down
-
Scales horribly on my hp stream 8.. both new apps basically unusable. But I assume they know
-
If things aren't working properly, report it to the Devs through the Windows Store or their app. Can't rely on the dev to find every single flaw out there and reporting it numbers will make it a priority for the developer.
-
What's up with the Cursor
-
My Lumia 950 cannot give reliable notifications of any Facebook or Facebook Messenger items and I hope this will be fixed hopefully when the Mobile version manages to get released. As others have said a universal app is called this because it works on more than one version of Windows 10 and this says it's only for Windows 10 PC's. If Microsoft get some of these main social apps both working on all versions of Windows phones and also get social apps that are available on other OS's (Snapchat), than you'd be really suprised how many younger people would purchase the phones. Most kids these days have PC's or Laptops and then phones or tablets running different OS's because they need them to stay in-touch with friends, but imagine these kids also having a Windows phone. The idea of universal apps for Windows would then sell the phones faster than most OS's. Think of Messenger working on both PC & Mobile and then being allowed to work between the two eg. Start a message on one and save it, so you can finish it on the other. Microsoft need to really speed up both creating apps and working with companies to create apps & promote the Windows 10 system.
-
Well technically UWP or Universal doesn't guarantee it's available on multiple devices....just that you CAN run the same code across devices.
-
Instagram for Windows 10 please.
-
Already available!
-
Good, now release for Win 10 mobile.
-
Waiting for fb mobile/messenger...
-
If you have tablet then these apps are very useful! I have 7'' HP tablet and it makes much easy to use facebook.
-
I'll use these apps on my tablet, for sure! On my laptop, I'll probably use Messenger, too, so I don't have to have the browser and Facebook loaded up all the time.
-
Hardware requirement . Windows 10 pc ... I have that bt still says recommended hardware missing Posted via the Windows Central App for Android

Test.

So I have the Messenger BETA as well as the FB BETA which reworking fine... And clicking the like for each of these apps made me download again both apps... Does it mean the BETA will continue or I can ditch both BETA apps now and use these new apps instead?
-
*which were working; *link (sorry cant edit my post)
-
Well, Instagram Beta on mobile was updated straight into the new one, so the Beta doesn't exist any longer. If they don't need that one, then they could very well drop the other Beta's - but it's probably worth holding on to those apps until a time comes to check, cos you never know if they might.
-
Scaling is craaazy on my Surface Pro 4. You can't even write messages because the text box is out of range. What a joke. Who are they targeting? Desktop users?
-
Same problem here on an original Surface Pro. Text box appears halfway up the screen, over the received messages. How that got through QA I've no idea.
-
Guess no one else is getting this error code 0X80096004 which is why I can't download this app.
-
search wsreset.exe do it and then log out from the store and log in again... also delete the old facebook app
-
We need those apps for mobile!!! Posted via the Windows Central App for Android
-
both facebook messenger and the new facebook app crush on start to me after a few seonds ...can i do something?
-
same here, cant understand what the problem is
-
i tried everything i could think... reinstall.. delete the old apps .. reset the store... nothing worked ..
-
yeah same here, nothing worked
-
Finally seeing it after many attempts. Kept redirecting to old mobile app but now working. Yay!
-
Just as I'm reinstalling apps on my mum's computer...such a weird coincidence. I was like "this wasn't in the store yet when I was there an hour ago...now my computer illiterate mother is going to think i did "something" to her computer...but yay! Can't wait for it to go mobile!
-
I wonder if this would have happened if Skype wasn't being baked into Windows 10, Office & Outlook.
-
Tried it logging back in Posted via the Windows Central App for Android

This messenger is verycool and fast, but this kind of messenger need on mobile.... I dont believe cause facebook is making a UWP app and now finishing this..... why??????

Can't download. "Try the download again. Something happened on our end."

Still unable to download this is very disappointing! Posted via the Windows Central App for Android

Oh no! My favourite feature is missing from desktop messenger app. If you go to the website messenger.com, it almost looks the same as the app except on the right you see all the photos shared with one another for a particular user. This is SO useful and am sad they left it out of the app. :(
-
Click the person's name in the chat window and go to Shared Photos. It's just a bit hidden in there, since the app is probably imported from iOS.
-
Thank you. I would never have even looked where you said. Thank you! Posted from Windows Central for Windows 10
-
Still no calling. And I'm not even complaining about payments and bots.
-
One of the most powerful on pc
-
And it's a mess of Windows 10 and iOS iconography and some visuals UI elements don't have working actions behind them. Like an alphabet jumplist. Also, no call/video ability.
-
i click on the link to download and nothing comes up
-
Well that's an awesome start :D its not as featured as the new fb app is that is truly like the we experience(for me at least it seems so) but it still lacks many features so we look forward to many future updates to bring the pc and when they release it the mobile messenger apps on par with the other platforms!
-
Hmm seems like the days of IMs like yahoo and aol messenger are back
-
yet another "fall short" of a realeased. considering it is not feature rich, this is just another BETA in the house.
-
Why do we want his for mobile instead of the older 8.1 mobile app, ASAP? Because we want the all the modern bells & whistles other mobile apps have as well as the intreactive notifications so we don't have to fully open and load up the app to make quick message replies. The old 8.1 app is seriously outdated even though it still works. Okay???
-
is it just me? The app crashes every time i launch it.
-
Same here, FB app as well. No error displayed.
-
Messenger, just like the FB app, crash either immediately or within five seconds of opening, not even displaying a sign in. Majorly Sucks.
-
no crashes for me on surface pro 4
-
I'm not able to find options to change my Availability Status (Offline or online). is it available in app?
-
I finally got the app downloaded for some reason VPN was on. Posted via the Windows Central App for Android

Not UWP. Chm.

Can you please stop using tradedoubler? The bloody thing is unreliable or even non-working for some ISPs.
-
Please think about wp too.... U have launched an app messenger in wp store too...
-
Things are getting better on windows platform with the UWP style. Great! I hope Mark doesn't do what Twitter did to tweeten, to Rudy's 6tag.❤
-
Auh, i guess this can be called a "start". Has a loooot of problems this one at least on my pc. Login experience was already discouraging...couldn't first type my login information, the screen was unresponsive. This was solved by.....waiting a minute or so!
The app itself is unusable in any way. When opening any existing conversation the app shows the messages so that the ones on the right side of the chat tree are "out of screen". Also can't even write a new message because the message input area also vanises out of screen.
