New this week for Xbox One: Gears of War 4, Battlefield 1 trial, WWE 2K17

This week looks to be a busy one for fans of the shooter genre, with a range of titles releasing over the coming days. Microsoft is debuting one of its biggest shooters of the season with Gears of War 4, and Battlefield 1 will be available during its EA Access trial period. Other notable releases include Metal Gear Solid V: The Definitive Experience, WWE 2K17, and Rise of the Tomb Raider's latest DLC.

Our top picks this week:

Gears of War 4

Headlining this week's lineup is the latest return to the Gears of War franchise, which marks the first title in the series designed specifically for the Xbox One. With a new protagonist, Gears of War 4's story takes the perspective of JD Fenix and a squad of his friends, in search of a mysterious new enemy.

Gears of War 4 ships with a full-fledged campaign, a competitive Versus mode and a returning fan favorite: Horde mode. As one of Microsoft's biggest releases this fall, the game will also support the Play Anywhere program between Xbox One and Windows 10 devices. While owners of the Ultimate Edition gained early access last week, Gears of War 4 officially releases on Tuesday, October 11.

The latest iteration in the WWE franchise also arrives this week, with new gameplay additions and an updated roster. The well-established WWE gameplay returns, with new moves, animations and brawling opportunities. The new Promo Engine also adds to this immersion, allowing players to smack talk their opponents, build personal relationships with fighters and shape future events.

WWE 2K17 will be available as a standard digital download or a higher tier Digital Deluxe edition, bundling together the base game and season pass.

Battlefield 1 (via EA Access)

For those with an EA Access subscription, the 10-hour early access trial begins for Electronic Arts' highly anticipated shooter, Battlefield 1. Going back in time to first World War, players will take on the roles of a range of soldiers who fought in the brutal conflict.

During the early access period, a significant portion of the final game's content will be available to play. On the multiplayer front, five maps and four game modes will be available before launch. Two of the game's six single-player missions will also be playable, with progress transferring over to the final game. Once the game's Early Enlister Deluxe Edition has released on October 18, EA Access members will gain access to the entire multiplayer map roster.

  • Has WWE 2K17 dropped the mini-game mechanics for submissions etc.?
  • Can't decide between gears or Battlefield 1
  • I've gone to Battlefield. Available 13th October in UK for EA members. Super stoked.
