If you're dealing with an app you installed using the Store, you can reinstall the app using the following steps:

After installing the Fall Creators Update, a small number of users have been reporting problems with the Microsoft Store app. In the Feedback Hub app, users are saying that the Store will no longer start correctly showing a "Something bad happened - Unknown layout specified in manifest" error message.

A Microsoft engineer from the Store team said that they're investigating the problem, but the company hasn't acknowledged this as an issue with Windows 10.

Solution

Solution 1: It appears that users affected by this problem are those running Windows 10 outside the United States, and it's been suggested that simply changing the region will temporarily address the problem until there is a permanent solution.

You can change the Microsoft Store region using these steps:

  1. Open Start.
  2. Click on Time & language.
  3. Click on Region & language.
  4. Under "Country or region," select the country you want to use from the drop-down menu.

Once you've completed the steps, try opening the Store again, and now it should start working again.

Solution 2: If you're experiencing problems with the Microsoft Store, you can also reset the app using the Settings app or using the WSReset command to clear the cache (try both).

In order to reset the Microsoft Store app do the following:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Click on Apps.
  3. Click on Apps & features.
  4. Select the Microsoft Store app.
  5. Click the Advanced options link.
  6. Click the Reset button.

After completing the steps, open the Store app again, and you should no longer get the "Something bad happened - Unknown layout specified in manifest" error message.

If you're still having an issue with the Store, using the Windows key + R keyboard shortcut to open the Run command, type wsreset.exe, and click OK. As you run the command, the Store data will reset, and app you launch again.

How to fix Mail not syncing problem with the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update

About this problem

If you're a participant in the Windows Insider Program who upgraded to the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update using the latest preview, you may experience syncing problems with the Mail app or adding a new email account.

Solution

Solution 1: According to Microsoft, "this issue occurs due to a bug in our servicing stack where the Feature-on-Demand (FOD) packages are incorrectly dead-ended," and the components need to be re-installed.

If you're having this problem, you can try the following recommended workaround:

  1. Open Start.
  2. Search for Command Prompt, right-click the result, and click Run as administrator.
  3. Type the following command and press Enter:dism /online /Add-Capability /CapabilityName:OneCoreUAP.OneSync~~~~0.0.1.0
  4. Restart your computer.

After restarting, open the app to confirm your account is syncing. If the account doesn't appear to be syncing correctly open the Mail Settings > Manage Accounts, select the account, and if the Account settings dialog is available, the component was successfully reinstalled.

In the case the account is still not syncing, you should delete and add the account again opening the Mail Settings > Manage Accounts, select the account, click the Delete account from this device option and click Delete. After removing the account, click the Add Account button to re-add it.

Solution 2: Alternatively, if you're experiencing syncing problems, you can also try resetting the Mail and Calendar apps using the Settings app.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Click on Apps.
  3. Click on Apps & features.
  4. Select the Mail and Calendar apps.
  5. Click the Advanced options link.
  6. Click the Reset button.

After completing the steps, you may need to re-add all your accounts again.

How to fix error 0xc00000bb installing with the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update

About this problem

It's been reported (opens in new tab) by a number of users that the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update fails to install when using a particular storage drive and motherboard.

Basically, during the upgrade process, the computer reboots to continue the installation, and suddenly, users are greeted with the 0xc00000bb error message.

The biggest problem is that after the error message pops up, users can't rollback or reset their device. In one case, a user at the Microsoft forums (opens in new tab) notes being unable to access the recovery settings, the SSD got locked, and after unlocking it using Command Prompt, Windows 10 will no longer find the drive.

It appears that this issue is affecting a small number of users using the Asus X299 motherboard in combination with a Samsung NVMe Solid-State Drive (SSD).

Solution

After installing Windows 10 version 1709, if you try to repair the installation using the SFC command tool a message that the corrupted files have been repaired will appear again and again running the tool multiple times.

A small number of users have been reporting this problem, and it appears to happen when using third-party antivirus, such as AVG, Kaspersky, Avast, BitDefender, and others.

Microsoft hasn't reported this as an issue with the new version of Windows 10, but affected users have suggested that uninstalling the third-party antivirus returns everything to normal.

If you have a third-party antivirus, you can try uninstalling it, and temporarily let the Windows Defender Antivirus protect your device.

In the case that removing the security software doesn't fix the problem, you can use the Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) command to fix problems in the installation.

How to fix apps reopening after restarting with the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update

About this problem

After shutting down or restarting a device certain apps will reopen automatically during login with the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update.

Solution

While many users are claiming this behavior as a bug on Windows 10, but it's not. It's actually a feature included with the Fall Creators Update.

Windows 10 already includes an option that allows to use your sign-in information to finish setting up updates, and in this new version, the feature expands to regular restarts and shutdowns. Furthermore, supported apps (e.g., Chrome, Task Manager, and Registry) will restart automatically during sign-in.

If you want to prevent Windows 10 from restoring apps you have previously opened, you can use these steps:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Click on Accounts.
  3. Click on Sign-in options.
  4. Under "Privacy," turn off the Use my sign-in info to automatically finish setting up my device after an update or restart toggle switch.

How to properly install the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update

Although the transition to a new version of Windows 10 should be a simple process, because creating an OS that runs on millions of devices is complex, problems are always expected (at least) in the early days.

However, there are a number of things you can do to minimize the chances of errors as you install the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update.

Create backup

Windows 10 by design has a mechanism to automatically roll back any changes during the installation in case something goes wrong. However, you can't expect the feature to work every time, which is why you should always have a recovery plan that involves creating a backup of your system before trying to install Windows 10 version 1709.

While we're mentioning to remove your antivirus, it's assumed that you understand that it's not recommended to have your device unprotected.

If you're using the Windows Defender Antivirus, you can use these steps to disable it:

  1. Open Windows Defender Security Center.
  2. Click on Virus & threat protection.
  3. Click the Virus & threat protection link.

  1. Turn off the Real-time protection toggle switch.

After the upgrade, Windows Defender Antivirus will activate again automatically, or you can always install your preferred antivirus again.

Windows Firewall may also cause problems during a feature update installation, but you can always temporarily disable it using these steps:

  1. Open Windows Defender Security Center.
  2. Click on Firewall & network protection.

  1. Click the Private (discoverable) network link.
  2. Turn off the Windows Firewall toggle switch.

  1. Click the Public (non-discoverable) network link.
  2. Turn off the Windows Firewall toggle switch.

Stop blocking updates

If you're trying to download the new version using Windows Update, and you're running Windows 10 Pro, you also want to check that you're not blocking the Fall Creators Update from downloading on your computer.

You can check that your device is not blocking the update using the following steps:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Click on Update & security.
  3. Click the Advanced options link.

  1. Under "Choose when updates are installed," make sure that settings are configured to Current Branch and 0 days for both of the deferred options.

Also, make sure that the Pause Updates toggle switch is turned off.

On Windows 10, a device that uses a metered connection will be excluded from getting the new release. If you have a limited internet connection, make sure you have enough data in your plan or connect to an unlimited network connection and disable metered connection for your Wi-Fi or Ethernet network adapter.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Click on Network & Security.
  3. Click on Wi-Fi or Ethernet.

  1. Click the network connection you're using.
  2. Turn off the Set as metered connection toggle switch.

Remove non-essential drives

Sometimes your computer won't be able to upgrade to a new version, because of hardware or driver compatibility problems with connected peripherals.

Before installing the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update (version 1709), it's a good idea to disconnect peripherals that are not essential during the process. This means that you should disconnect removable storage devices like USB flash and hard drives, SD cards, printers, scanners, and Bluetooth devices.

You only need an internet connection, display, keyboard, and mouse to upgrade your system. After the installation, you can reconnect your peripherals.

Record special settings

Users have complained in the past about losing settings after installing a new version of Windows 10. If you're using a special configuration on your device, you should record it in case you need to re-apply the same configuration.

    This update has mind of its own! It goes thru Downloading and Prep to Install 2 times, yes 2 times, and then quits with no Restart Now button shown on the screen! After you close the Windows Update and load it again, the Downloading and Prep to Install goes on for the 3rd time and then finally the Restart Now button appears!
  • MS changed the way updates are staged. It does the majority of the work while the machine is still online, then restarts to complete. The download, initialisation and install can take some time, especially on a laptop. Once it's done this part, the final phase (blue screen with spinning circle dots) is quick

  • I cannot open settings either, the application window launches but remains a colourful window. This also means that I cannot launch Windows Update, except for launching the Windows Update troubleshooter and hoping that any updates would get installed this way. Many applications pinned to the taskbar cannot be launched either, including Microsoft Edge and the Windows Store. I found a little trick to get it back in the newest build...No matter how much better the NEW settings is, it's still not as customizable as the old one is.. Find a Win32 app (or install one) on the start menu, right click on it, select Uninstall. As it's not a "STORE" app, it will bring you to the OLD Programs and features, then from there click the top to see "All Control Panel Items", create a shortcut... DOne !
  • Hahaha. I pinned the Control Panel to the taskbar a long time ago. I originally did it in order to have a fast way to access the list of installed programs, where they can also be uninstalled. This seems to have saved my bottom in this current crisis. At least partially.

  • Still does the same thing. Never had problems with updates before. Keeps doing the first reboot then shows the instal blue screen..makes it to 14% then reboots again and sais reverting to previous windows version. Then I'm back to square one. Even tried sfc scan. Then stopped the update service..cleared the "download and datastore" folders in the "softwaredistrubution" folder, still no luck.

  • Ive tried reinstalling windows from ISO (complete reinstall) The fall creators update finally installs, but then cannot install cumulative update.  Spend hours with Microsoft remoting my pc and left with them finally running the media creation tool which in the end acted the same as it did before.  Reboot then reverting back to previous version when all it had to do is install the cumulative update.  So I just reinstalled windows (iso made before the fall update) and back to square one, everything running fine again aside from not being updated to the current version.

    I fixed the issue like this :
    0) be sure your PC has run Win update first
    1) disconnect internet and "forget" all wifi connection settings in memory
    2) launch the setup.exe (usb media or iso)
    3) unflag "download updates (recommended)" by flagging "not now"
    4) proceed with the installation. As soon as the upgrade goes over 15%, you are on the safe side.
    5) after upgrade, connect to the internet and launch Windows update
    6) restart

  • As I understand it, this error could be a problem with your current installation or an security application may causing a conflict try using the steps in this guide to repair your current installation, temporarily disable or uninstall your antivirus and try again.

  • Same here. Fixed by "simply" restarting in safe mode. To do so you must have the power button on the login screen. If you don't have it, you have to interrupt windows during the boot at least three times by pressing the power button. This will kick start the restore procedure, from which you can access the safe mode start up option. Once you've logged in in safe mode, you can restart.

  • I’m a Windows fan, but I must admit Windows Update is a nightmare. Consider yourself very lucky if you have no problems getting an update, especially a major one, on your device. Think about it, this long ass article on the numerous possible issues that one might encounter during the update process is a clear indication how unstable the process is. And up to this point, based on the comments here, it’s also clear that a lot of people are having issues getting the update. I agree with the article. MS makes the software, but can’t control the hardware built by other manufacturers which can cause problems with the update.

  • This update has been a real bear here. Not Happy. I have rolled back twice and reinstalled. It takes over 12 hours to do this update on a very beefy laptop. The Start Menu is hosed and all my Edge extensions are corrupt and fail to reinstall. Yikes. As soon as this gets patched I'm setting Win 10 Pro to halt all upgrades. This is totally unproductive...

  • My desktop computer update fine without any problems, however my laptop (Asus TransformerBook T100HA) was not so lucky. I finally managed to get enough space on it to do the update, the installation gets to around 21%, then the install fails. I then tried updating using USB disk; the installation did not budge from 0% for four hours until I finally shut down the computer and restored my computer back to normal

  • Anyone got solutions for the loss of activation when installing this update? Mine was one of those digital licenses activated from an old retail Windows 7 box. Even putting in the generic cd key, Windows says it cannot connect to the activation server.
  • Use the license troubleshooter with the instructions mentioned in this guide.
  • No bueno man. MS locked out the old use a Windows 7 retail key on a new PC without going through installing Windows 7 first. Apparently if it was already activated with Win 7 at the 1st place, then its fine. Solved my own problem by buying a new Win 10 cd key anyhow since the whole digital activation thing would be a PITA if my motherboard fails, which had happen to me one too many times.
  • Microsoft was sending continue updates of Windows 10 which through my operating system drive became full, So after installing this update, I experienced Windows 10 activation error which was upgraded from Windows 7, So I searched and found ODosta Store, Which is a Good site to buy Windows 10 Pro license. They're selling OEM legit keys. After buying it, I activated my OS without any issue and now my Windows can get updates directly from Microsoft server.
  • After the installation several of the store apps no longer showed up in the start screen and the taskbar. The task bar apps did allow me to click on the blank area where the app icon used to be and launch the app, but the area in the start screen where the apps were pinned did not allow this. The apps are still on the computer but can only be launched by going into the store, where it shows the app as being installed, and clicking play. I posted this on the MS help forums and other users had the exact same problem. There appears to be no fix at the moment other than rolling back to the previous build
  • Are "tabs set aside" in Edge synced to the cloud? (If not I'll have to empty that stash before doing a clean install.)
  • Installed the fall update this morning. MS pushed it to my laptop via updates. Ran into two issues. The first was that the OneDrive file placeholders feature was not available. I followed the Windows Central instructions and reinstalled OneDrive. That fixed the issue. Thanks. The second issue was more serious. The Internet Connection Sharing service (ICS) was consuming high percentage of cpu. I set the service to manual start and rebooted. The problem continued. Services.msc showed ICS continued to attempt to restart ("restarting") but never started. I killed the process and changed the service to zero retry attempts if starting failed. So far so good, but I have not restarted since. CPU usage is back to the low single digits.
  • The ICS in my PC also was consuming high cpu percentage. I set the service to disabled, and restart PC. Then this problem was cleared.
  • This is not a solution as ICS will be needed for Hyper-V, used by Docker, for example. See this thread for additional discussion of this problem.
  • Perhaps by the time I get around to installing this in January, all of these issues will be fixed.  
  • Touch keyboard does not appear on Surface Pro 3. Only if I enter in tablet mode.
  • Very upset my home WiFi was slow so I used my phone's mobile hotspot and used all my data to download the update and it failed saying restoring previous version of Windows. What a POS.

  • My Win10 suddenly started an update in the night, Oct 22, 2017. Since the update (which took many hours) there are a number of things not working, including the windows start button, bottom left. Right clicking on it works, but only a few of the selections work. Notifications doesn't work. In the control bar at the bottom, a clock icon and an envelope icon have appeared, but they are non responsive. Cortina doesn't work. There are probably other things. Any thoughts?

  • I went with performing clean installation of FCU instead, because it gives the opportunity to turn my USB stick into a bootable USB stick aka win 10 fcu, then I  inserted it into my PC and booted it up and deleted the partition that had my dirty version of windows 10 cu and replaced it with a brand new install of FCU, at the same I had to reinstall some software and new ones to.
  • Of all the decades that I've been dealing with Windows, this update has given me more fits than any other.  I'm getting hit with the 0xC1900101 - 0x30018 error, which according to some of Microsoft's articles, is a generic catch-all for a driver load failure and doesn't necessarily mean there's a incompatible driver.  Some of the workarounds even include unplugging uncessary equipment and even your network cable after the download. And I stil lhaven't been able to get it installed on my main machine.... :(
  • I have been using Windows ever since it first came out. This update, however, was the worst to install in all the time. I had to roll back twice, then installed it from the ISO, just to discover that my user profile got corrupted. It took me 3 full days to deal with Microsoft "getting better" on delivering updates. On the upside - now it is running almost without bugs. You learn to be humble when you use Microsoft products.
  • Since updating the onscreen keyboard pops up at start up. Does anyone have a solution? Apart from that minor issue everything is rock solid. Edge on the desktop has improved greatly for me which is a bonus.
  • On touch devices, I have this Action Center bug which scrolling doesn't work with touch at all.
  • I'm getting the 0x80070008 error but have tons of free disk space on my C: drive. Tried running the troubleshooter wth no success. Not sure what to try next. Any ideas?
  • After updating to 1709, HDMI resolution can't be controlled. Rolled back to previous version and problem solved. Anyone having the same problem?  
  • Yup. My Samsung TV that I use with my PC will no longer work with HDMI, so I'm now stuck with a terrible VGA image. Still looking for a fix.
  • i've ran into an issue on one of my pcs where the drive letters of my dvd drive and second hdd were changed. So when i would go into "this pc" it would prompt me to insert disk into the dvd drive. This occured because i have changed the location of my desktop, music, documents etc to that other hdd. was a simple fix using disk management, but kinda weird why that would have happened. in addition to that, it's not mentioned the bug regarding the spacing on the left side of the drive icons in "This PC". There are reports about this and wondering if there is any fix yet. Weird this is, i have installed this update on my pc at work (enterprise edition), and didnt get any of the issues i mentionned above. I'm wondering if the windows editions have some role in the occuring bugs.   -Sam M.
  • With every update they need a second update for Windows 10 on my PC.
    Before my PC doesn't go to sleep and with the next update they fixed it.
    After that they came with another update and again my pc doesn't go to sleep, had to disable network sharing to get it to sleep again in a proper way.
    Now with this update 1709 it goes to sleep properly, but if you touch the mouse or keyboard the pc gives a noice for 1 second and then it tottaly shuts down and you have to press the power button to switch it on again. I hope they can fix that one!
  • Bad news. High frequency of the "Blue Screen of Death" compared to before this update, from once-in-a-while to about 10 crashes, so far.
  • Windows10 updates have been terrible: twice a major update has made my PC unbootable because the hard drive files are totally scambled. All files are moved to a newly define "X" drive.  The only way to get out of this is a fresh/clean rebuild of the hard drive.  These are automatic updates that I can not avoid.  I've used Microsoft systems since 1982 and the update aspect of Windows 10 is by far the worst problem I've ever faced. I returned to an old PC running Windows 7 and am relieved that I finally have a stable system.  But what is the future? No good choices.

  • creators update the worst since windows vista -- destroys computer and network all of our networks are broken from the upgrade
    all of our software licenses destroyed having to reinstall all software and hire tech to fix all networks  in office  also my home computers same problems, spent 2 weeks reinstalling all software because all licenses were gone, even microsofts and we cannot stop windows update, they force this, they should be held liable for this, if all users joined a class action, maybe they would let you disable updates
