Windows 10 Mobile build 10586.164 now rolling out to non-Insider AT&T Lumia 950

Windows 10 Mobile build 10586.164 is now rolling out to the AT&T-branded Lumia 950 for those not enrolled in the Windows Insider program. To recap, build 10586.164 launched roughly a week ago for those on the Slow and Production rings, bringing a number of fixes and improvements along for the ride that include:

  • Improvements for the reliability of app notifications, including text messages and alarms not ringing as scheduled. Improvements for text message backup to reduce data and battery usage.
  • Fixes for Microsoft Edge with address bar suggestions showing late or persisting during navigation, "Close all tabs" not closing all tabs, and Word Flow on the address bar not functioning as expected.
  • Fix for a problem where the Microsoft account was not detected by the Outlook Mail, Outlook Calendar and People app. Attempting to add a new contact in this state caused the People app to crash for some users.
  • Fix for a problem that caused the Wi-Fi connection to temporarily switch off after prolonged use for some users.
  • Fix for a problem that caused first-party app updates to fail to install successfully for some users, leaving the apps in state where they cannot be launched.
  • Improvements for battery usage, Bluetooth connectivity, and OS reliability.

AT&T Lumia 950 users that aren't enrolled in the Windows Insider program should be able to start pulling the update down now. To do so, head to Settings > Update & security > Phone update > Check for updates.

Once you've snagged the update, be sure to shout out either on the forums or in the comments below and let us know how it's treating you.

Thanks for the tips!

  • Poor guys still haven't gotten their firmware update.
  • The whole ecosystem has lost its appeal to the vast majority of users, and we're mostly stuck here with devices that we cannot sell, waiting for them to die on their own, or get stolen (as if they even worth something). So we don't give a flying f*** whether w10m or even w1234qtyr gets pushed to our devices
  • Woho, a lot of negativity here;). Look at the bright side. 950 is a great phone. Aproved by me!
  • Lol... Bright side is only Lumia 950.. Then Microsoft is doomed.. Lol
  • If by great you mean awful, then I concur.
  • Have you even used a 950 / 950 XL?? They're fantastic devices
  • I have.  I've owned nearly every Windows Phone produced to date (Focus, HD7S, Titan, Titan II, 920, 1520, One M8, 830, 640, 950, and my family the Quantum and 540s for a time).  It's been interesting to see its evolution over time.  When I bought my first home, I started to feel the burn of the "app gap" with many native apps like Nest, Hue, MyQ, Sonos, missing.  Thankfully there are lots of third party apps. Thankfully each of these products has an open API.  But, when SmartThings was just unusable for a while on my 950 I decided it was time to switch to Android.  I bought a Samsung S6.  I returned it the very next day.  I just could not do without my Start screen or its tiles.  Now, I have my 950 again and I love it.   In that time, Samsung's SmartThings app has greatly stabilized and they've even committed to better supporting the product with (hopefully optimistic) monthly updates.  I also discovered HomeRemote and put together my own console for using Windows devices to control ALL of those home automation things I couldn't do so before (easily or reliably).  HomeRemote works so well, the "app gap" is no longer an issue for me.  I'm sorry I even considered leaving after being a fan for so many years.  Yey, happy ending.
  • Disagree.
  • Hey Look!! Its x I'm tc, I get it, that play on words... you are so clever... look at you go...
  • Thanks!  Glad you noticed how clever I am. Also, this is a pretty nice update!  Fixes quite a few of the things that make the L950 a real PITA.  The Edge improvements alone make it go from basically a broken browser to a passable, if still not quite pleasant, one to use.  And I haven't gotten a chance to give the WiFi a run through its paces, but W10 in general (PC and mobile) has serious WiFi problems--which I'm guessing are somehow linked to WiFi Sense--so any improvements are most welcome.
  • Nag, nag, nag.
  • I happen to love my 950........
  • I love my 950 as well on AT&T graet phone keeps getting better and better all the time.
  • On the latest insider build for Lumia 950, there a a few bits, but this device is awesome!!!
  • The firmware is really at&t's fault. I mean yours is the first phone to get non-insider windows 10 update. That's pretty neat if you ask me. Even 950xl unlocked hasn't received it. At least I had to join the release preview ring. And how many android users do you know on the latest version?
  • I probably misread something but what do you mean unlock 950xl hasn't received it?  Mine has .164 OS and the most current firmware.
  • I was on redstone and when I went to recover using Windows recovery tool, It gave me the older release. No updates were available till I joined insider preview ring and then I got .164. .164 was never officially released to production line. May be tomorrow though. Are you sure you're not insider on slow/preview rings?
  • I'm on production for my 950XL, never did insider on it. Got 164 last week if I remember well. I've done insider on 640, 920 and 930 though
  • Rediculous!  The value of same OS on all devices will only grow. Windows is still the OS for business with no reason to see that change.  Business drives what other devices use.  Windows is the present and the future.  Now that corp apps can be ported to the 950, 950xl, it's an even worse idea to mix OSs. It isn't what we geeks like, it's the best business decision to make everything the same color (an old John Deere truth).  Again, business is the driver, not us nerds.
  • "The vast majority of users"? Excuse me but you do not speak for everyone. You can only speak for yourself, maybe the people in your real-life inner circle, and the people who whine in the comments section here. It's best if you stop using "we", settle for "I", and do what any normal person who is dissatisfied with their purchase would, which is buy a phone that suits their needs.
  • Anyone who likes this piece of garbage is surely in the minority.  I am glad you are happy with your L950 (if, indeed, you are), but I think his comment is easily accurate.
  • Why do you insist on hanging out on this site... it baffles me! You must live a very lonely and pathetic life I guess... there are SO many things to smile about.. you should take the time you spend here to go find some...
  • You shouldn't use "we're because you sure aren't speaking for me
  • From your comment, you sounds as if you work at AT&T? Maybe? Why does a person who seems to have no interest commenting on a Windows forum? Unless you're just trolling?
  • Seriously doubt he/she "works" even at AT&T... just sayin'...
  • AT & T is a company porqueria of subjecting people who have lumia phone in this case and in my case 920 has not even released the update to Lumia Denim RM-820 phone because? Winning this company to keep users with updates as old lumia Cyan?
  • Don't count yourself as the vast majority, that's a bit conceited. Posted from Windows Central for Windows 10
  • Totally agree with you.
  • Well... Honestly I switched from iPhone 6S and I happen to love my 640XL. And I see many people interesting in these devices.
  • Yep, despite the huge thumbs down you seemed to have, you are right mate. Who the f** wants to buy a used Windows phone device? you must be lucky as hell to find a buyer. Know the feeling...After paying over 500EUR on that 950, hardly sold it with 400 after a month...it was a nice phone by HW and even by design, despite non metal body, but the OS...oh GODDD!!! that crap joke half baked OS ruined everything! I wish I could have flashed a WP8.1 image on it, but I could not.
  • Finally someone with a brain. I don't mind the thumbs down, as long as I am delivering an honest message. For the rest of the nerds out there: Wake up!
  • You're calling everyone who likes the OS nerds? Honestly that's a bit off. Alot of people like win10Mobile OS. That does not mean they don't have a brain (as you liked to say in your previous comment). You didn't like the ecosystem? Go away then. I can't see why you're still sticking around unless your intent is purely to annoy people. Everyone has an opinion and I respect that yours is you don't like the ecosystem anymore. But don't them go and put everyone else down because they like the OS. That's their (and my) opinion just like you have yours. We all still have a brain and we are all capable of making our own minds up. Now do us a favour, go to android or IPhone and stop reading and commenting on Windows phone/10mobile articles when you obviously dislike anything branded with the word. +640 on Win10Mobile
  • Exit door is to your left... here I will hold it open for you.... ok there ya go... watch your step that first one down can be a little tricky!! :)
  • I'm kinda with this guy. Windows 10 Mobile had such hype, hope and opptimism. Microsoft ruined that. The devices suck, the OS is so buggy and unstable - and once again we're stuck not getting updates from carriers. Waited so long and I'm over it. I love Windows Phone, but after awhile you need to just get real and accept that it's going nowhere, and Microsoft can't seem to get it together.
  • Actually, i have an 830 with the last buil for insiders (10586.164) and i love it. It works great!
  • Move over then to Android, no one is stopping you, thanks Posted from windows central for windows 10 mobile
  • Geez thanx for the permission... You know what's sad? Your blind support for a platform that crashed and burned long time ago... And your trust in people who let down over and over and over and over again... This "thing" you are defending will continue to disappoint even the most optimistic... Pathetic!
  • LOL.  Speak for yourself, Strong Sad.
  • The future is unlocked phones, no providers slowing things down.  As it should be.
  • Just rolled back to this build. Lost every text I had!!! Can't believe this is something they fixed...
  • Enable the setting "sync messages across devices" in the sms app settings
  • Finally! Posted from Windows Central for Windows 10
  • It's not firmware
  • Reading comprehension is not your thing, eh? I said hopefully the firmware is coming soon!
  • Chris said finaly
  • What you didn't comment at all
  • No one said it was firmware. That doesn't come from Microsoft, that comes from your carrier (if it's an unlocked phone, I'm not too sure how that works so I can't comment for that) +640 on Win10Mobile
  • If its unlocked, then the update will came as soon as regional tests are done.
It can be ready more quickly then the careers's fw from that region.
  • Ah that's good to know. When I find the money for it I've been thinking of unlocking my 640 so that's good to know when I do. Thanks :) +640 on Win10Mobile
  • And my 950 on EE in the UK ☺
  • And my carrier free 950 XL with SIM by TMO-DE, as well as the 950 O2O-DE of my colleague. If updates for carrier devices always started just one week late in the future, I could live with that.
  • Ha. Old news for my unlocked 950XL :P just so u guys know this build still sucks.
  • I would hard reset then. By all accounts .164 is very good, stable, and with little to no issues.
  • Hard reset without restoring from backup?
  • That's what I'm wondering myself. Can I restore from a backup, or do I have to do a hard reset without restoring and do I have it for all builds or just for a current one?
  • I did a hard reset on the previous build because I had to. Then I upgraded to this one. Idle battery life is hugely improved.
  • Daniel I'm a huge fan for hard resetting after an update. But for the past 3 builds or so after hard reset it takes up to 3 days before all messages and contacts that were backed up to restore. But everything else works wonders :(. ?? Anyone else or you have this problem. cause all the other times they came back within the first 30 minutes! Lumia 1520
  • They changed background syncing so it doesn't kill your battery while it's not plugged in. It's part of the changelogs
  • Indeed. Works great on 640xl...dont know why all the 950/xl phones are sucking with it lol 10x more spec phone...
  • My 950XL works great.
  • Fantastic on my 950. No idea why anyone would be having issues with it
  • with "little to no issues" are you sure??
  • My 640 xl disagrees. It's anything very good or stable. tiles are sometimes blank when returning to start screen or opening a folder. Edge absolutely sucks. I refuse to use it, unless I want to buy a new phone from the frustration of it not fully loading pages.Groove music still crashes often. Apps, in general, still crash way too often.   w10m feels like it an Android phone from 3 years ago.  MS is selling phones with an unfinished, and buggy OS. I love WP, but this may kill it. If people didn't like 8.1, they are going to hate 10.
  • I can't say I have the same experience on my 950. No crashing, of anything, ever. Oh except "Tentacles" (originally released for WP7) won't load past the splash screen... I'm not sure if it's been ported to W10M? Anyway, I am really impressed with Edge... I'm a web developer and test my websites in a variety of devices all the time. Edge works flawlessly, and I use it on dozens of sites per day. I'm really not sure why yours isn't working the same way (memory?)
  • Yes you are right. I did a hard reset after updating to .164 and did a fresh start without restoring any backup and this build works pretty fine. The issues i faced seems to be have fixed after doing a hard reset.  Plus i faced this annoying bug in edge which made the webpages stutter while scrolling and i think now that issue is also fixed nearly to 98%
  • Hey Daniel bro when we get window 10 update for 8.1 device
  • Hey Dan. Just to let you know, .164 does have a issue that has made our phones unusable for business. We are graphic designers on the go. So discussing ideas with clients requires us to grab images and share. With the .164 build that is no longer possible. When you tap the Bing image it goes into a circle thing. Our go around is to use a Google tile through Edge and use that service. Unfortunately, it has really dampen the WP experience for us, with some going back to their personal phones, just to get work done more effectively. Sadly our tech is feeling the heat because he's the one that convince our boss to go with the ATT 950s. Our tech fears that MS might not address it soon because it's not a big enough issue for most users in the users voice, but for us who are dependent on images this is quite the inconvenience. My old phone is a 920 so I'm good, plus I'm finding that I enjoy the 8 experience more than the 10. But this is embarrassing since everyone here knows that I'm a WP fan. LOL.
  • I confirmed this bug. Strange. Bummer. I doubt they will ignore this. Here is a workaround: Open Edge and go to Bing.com and then find image from there. Worked for me.
  • I'm going to try the Bing through Edge. I don't think we even thought to try that thinking that Bing was integrated even through Edge. But will look at it when I get to work.
  • Hard reset worked wonders for me. Battery life is MUCH better. Posted from Windows Central for Windows 10
Using the Alcatel OneTouch Fierce XL for Windows 10
  • What kind of restore, if any, do you do after hard reset? Posted from Windows Central for Windows 10
  • None, otherwise you are basically undoing the reset.
  • Hard reset is only required if you have been making backups on insider builds or any non-stable builds. If you gofrom 8.1 straight to 10, it should just preserve your settings and run well. If not hard reset should be attempted.
  • Yes still sucks. Cannot keep data connection neither WiFi nor cellular data. Have to soft reset several times per day. No random reboots anymore so there is a plus.
  • I have not had to do that one time.  I love my 950 XL
  • Take your phone back
  • Hard reset, start from scratch. If it's still a problem. I would get a replacement for the phone. The alternative is to set your router to use only the 2.4ghz band. But honestly, going from 8.1 to 10 should be much different than going from an insider build to another insider build. Too many things change between builds. Sometimes restoring a backup may mess with things because they might have changed the way apps store info, or registry was optimized, who knows. After a hard reset just go to store and hit "my library" and install the apps you need. It's actually not that bad of an experience. Short of rebuilding your start screen. But sometimes being forced to rebuild your start screen actually lets you optimize it better and make it look better. Plus apps build up in your app list that you never used and going through your library you realize you don't really want to install some things.
  • Disagree. My 950xl works great!  And it will just keep getting better and better.
  • Both my 1520 and 925 beg to disagree! Both the 10586.164 and the 10586.122 before it are/were good builds!
  • "sucks"?? Works fantastic on my 950. What issues are there?
  • Just installed on my at&t 950. Enrolled in Insider production ring. Posted from Windows Central for Windows 10
  • Yes that's what the article is about
  • But the article said it was going out to non-insiders, which I'm not. :P Posted from Windows Central for Windows 10
  • You chose prodction ring so basically you are
  • Someone not so brilliant as you may appreciate the information I provided in my post. Posted from Windows Central for Windows 10
  • Your post is moot. As this article is about the build being released to non-insider
  • Yay for updates although I still want the official OTA update for my Lumia 640 so I can get it onto the Redstone builds.
  • Need firmware. Does anybody have any idea when we may see it?
  • Soon...... :)
  • May 2017
  • Lumia 1020 AT&T US user here. Just received the update myself.
  • I thought you were kidding.  I placed my lumia 1020 on ATT to production mode and sure enough, its updating to .164!
  • Yep, now only if we can get 14283 soon. There are quite a number of UX bugs that are fixed in that release.
  • And it introduces just as many new ones.  The grass isn't always greener.
  • Is this bypassing at&T, or did they approve it?
  • Carrier locked variant OS updates are sent out about 1 week later. It's the same for the various 50-series Lumias in the UK, the network variants started getting the .164 update today, whereas it was available to unlocked CV-GB handsets last week.
  • Now if ATT would get off there A$$ and release the firmware.
  • I think you mean their A$&$...
  • Nice one. +950
  • Does anyone knows why I can't get the update on my 1520 even though I'm on the insider program on fast ring?!
  • Right now Fast is only for select devices that shipped with 10.  Switch to Slow or Release ring and you should get it.
  • Change ur ring to release preview cz fast ring is reserved for the phones which had been shipped wid windows 10 mobile.
  • Well my 1320 is on the installation process right now, and I'm at Fast Ring, took me by surprise. Posted from Windows Central for Windows 10
  • Hard reset it's normal when the phone is freezing on 10 build
  • Did hard reset several times.. But still there are random freezes... ( and I'm not speaking on behalf of flagships.. )
  • Here we go again - going in the wrong direction yet again.
At least Here maps works in my area. Some imbeciles at MS have decided that here on the Oregon coast no one wants to drive directly to a destination. The "geniuses" have taken the Here data and selected scenic routes for all drives. If anyone wants to drive to a town ten miles and fifteen minutes away, the Here Drive app takes them there directly (as do Google maps and every other map app), but the POS MS maps or the equally poor Bing maps, takes them on a leisurely 50 mile, all back roads journey that takes two hours. It seems that MS has decreased their workforce to the point that only people with no common sense, no ability to listen and devoid of concern for loyal fans remain. Every time they update any software or app they destroy essential functions and replace them with half baked "new" features. I think they have rehired the Vista and ME folks and sent anyone with competence to the groups working on Android and IOS projects. Thanks again for screwing your loyal fans. When contacted about thus or a dozen other glitches, the great support crew at MS neither fixes the problem, nor even have the courtesy of acknowledging the request. Worst tech company on the planet.
  • Try checking your MS maps settings, probably have it set to avoid highways.
  • It's easier to rant, apparently.
  • Don't mind the fanboys here.you have every right to complain about REAL things, such as MS giving ZERO attention to their own apps for WP! you are right to think that it seems 99% of the good engineers where put to ios and android apps projects, and the rest of 1% with no vision,no common sense no NOTHING, maybe from Vista and ME era, to the WP department!
  • Off topic. Alarm app was updated and time picker is always visible now, or my L950XL went crazy on latest insider build? (or is really unstable for me now) Posted from Windows Central for Windows 10
  • Wen on 1520?
  • Yeah, when on 1520 ?
  • Yeah when on my 1520??
  • One of the comments earlier said to drop to release preview and it worked...
  • Its 16/03/2016 today, are we gonna rock and roll tomorrow?
  • Why? That build is worse than the latest build it already has.
  • Agreed build .164 is good.. But not stable enough... For flagships it may work effortlessly.. But guess what, Almost 70% of WPs are mid/ low end devices... For those the current build still have stability issues..
  • Did you get a firmware update for your device yet? Your device may need it before the official update.
  • I was thinking. I may be wrong but do ATT 950's have the latest Redstone build?
  • Has anybody noticed whether on this build sending SMS from PC (through Cortana) still works for them? I tried before the weekend and it didn't work, but I didn't think anything of it - Then I tried a few times today and it's not working (Tried from multiple PCs) Trying to ascertain if it's just my phone having the issue or whether it's a problem with the build
  • It works on Redstone to Redstone 950xl
  • Cheers, I'm on RS for PC only so it's possible it's that, or could be something wrong with my MS Account perhaps, since it would use that to sync the data. I'll keep testing it every now and again to see if I can get it working again
  • Every time I get an update, I just get so happy. Microsoft has done a great job at updating these windows 10 devices. I love it.
  • Why, oh why is my poor, struggling at$t 950 off the Insider rings, not picking up this update? Poor 950...it trys so hard, yet :/

  • WHERE IS MY FIRMWARE...  AT&T you big POS... Dropped Calls and bad servce in the locations that Verizon had full bars at.  Soon as I can get a phone from another network as good as my 950... I'll Be GONE!
  • it's not the network, it's the phone with that crappy OS and half baked firmware
  • It is the carrier (AT&T in this case), anything that touches the radio stack needs carrier approval especially on a carrier branded phone. Unless you go through the "debrand" process presuming there is a compatible rom for the aforementioned phone.
  • Got update for Lumia 950 on EE in UK. Fix for OneDrive and Microsoft people didn't work. Click on OneDrive and nothing happening. Update for Microsoft people still fails.
  • Definitely good bye Microsoft. Long waste of time journey since 2012. Thanks for forgetting us. Im not going to buy a low end 950 phone. I keep my 930 until I decide a new ( non windows phone ).
  • Good bye
  • Just updated my 1520 Nokia 1520 is alive
  • You could always be an android zombie. And how does it take three days to restore a backup. Let me share from a tech perspective. NEVER EVER EVER, use backup programs t o backup your stuff. Manually backup your stuff, or copy it to a place that is safe and not a root.
  • Are people hard resetting to factory and overlaying with the latest update of .164? Is it because the cumulative updates cause an issue?
  • No I just installed it and left everything alone.
  • That's great... But hopefully the firmware is hot on its heels.
  • Hahaha, Microsoft just made all 950 users Insiders
  • Recieved it last night. Non insider Lumia 950 Orange Romania, got it on Lumia 550 as well. ✔
  • I'm not an insider and my DS950 is not operating on a carrier, just wifi. I've had .164 for about two weeks and by all accounts it's pretty stable. One nitpicky thing - I can't copy/paste addresses into or out of any browser I've tried.
  • What takes windows 10 build so long????
  • I got this build few days ago
  • Got it last night on my unlocked 950XL here in belgium. Ill do a hard reset this evening just to be sure its optimal :). I can already tell that they really did something to the battery. Its 1h after I unplugged it and im still at 97% ! Other days I was down to 90% already.
  • Vodafone NL also got it now!
  • Got the build 2 days ago, I have send you guys a tip then....
  • Hi, After 6 hour ago Mine lumia 950 xl non insidet get .164 build in Poland in Play carrier. This look like update is on in CE too
  • when is it arriving to lumia 930
  • When in India?
  • I wonder if this Build could be the one all Windows 8.1 smart phones that can be upgraded to Windows 10 mobile will get. it makes sense for Microsoft to give it'sflagship the RTM buld first to see how things work out.
  • What ab the official update?
  • I do wish Windows Central would quit mixing up Production Ring and Release Preview Ring. .164 did NOT release to Production ring last week as stated in the article. It released to Slow and Release Preview rings. Production ring is what is happening now. When it releases to those on non-insiders, that is the production ring. It is not the same.
  • Wow, reading the list of fixes foliage me wondering if anything was working properly before the update?
  • Got it in Australia too this morning. 950xl Posted from Windows Central for Windows 10
