WaterField Designs, based in San Francisco, makes some of the best tech-oriented bags, sleeves, and cases on the market, and we've generally given them high marks for premium construction and thoughtful design. WaterField isn't slowing down in 2020, with the new Mezzo Backpack now available for preorder.

The Mezzo is a 14-liter backpack that sits somewhere near the middle of WaterField's backpack collection in terms of size and function. Its padded internal sleeves fit up to a 16-inch laptop and a 13-inch tablet, and there is an additional zippered pocket inside to keep smaller items and valuables together.

A water-resistant liner helps keep out any water that gets past the ballistic nylon or tan waxed canvas exterior, and the zipper on the main compartment is waterproof as well. A leather flap flips down over the exterior pocket to keep it safe, and you can choose from a magnetic Fidlock clasp or a paragliding buckle before January 10. Any order following will have whatever was most requested during the preorder period.

Also on the outside are dual water bottle pockets, and the bottom of the bag has the same leather accent for extra protection against wear. Dual adjustable straps and mesh padding along the back of the bag add some comfort, and the back also has a panel to slip over luggage handles for easier travel.

The Mezzo Backpack isn't exactly a budget option at $299, but those who have used WaterField products generally agree they're well worth the splurge. For a bit of extra enticement, WaterField is tossing in a complimentary Tech Pocket (usually $49) for your smaller gadgets.
