The Witcher 3: Songs of the Past — a third expansion was just announced early thanks to a leak
The game will get a new expansion 12 years after release
I must admit I'd heard all the rumors and rumblings about a third expansion for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, but I had not gotten too deep in the trenches with it, as I simply couldn't believe that such a thing could be possible. A third expansion, for a 12-year-old game?
Well CD Projekt Red just gave me goosebumps because it's actually happening. The Witcher 3: Songs of the Past will launch in 2027 on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5 and PC. This announcement comes a little earlier than planned since the title of the expansion was accidentally leaked on CD Projekt Red's own launcher earlier today.
New expansion and new update for The Witcher 3
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt sold 60 million copies and was followed by the incredibly successful expansions, Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine. Songs of the Past was announced today and will launch 12 years after the original game, and be co-developed with Fool's Theory.
Fool's Theory is also based in Poland, like CD Projekt Red, and has contributed to Divinity Original Sin 2 and Silent Hill 2. They are also notably helping CD Projekt Red with The Witcher Remake, and are widely known for the indie monster-taming CRPG The Thurmaturge.
CD Projekt Red has also announced that with new content coming to the game, they will need to update their "system requirements to ensure smooth performance and compatibility going forward." The next update will reflect these updates (and will be a great excuse to jump back into The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and remind yourself of the story).
Leaks had already surfaced online earlier today. Perhaps someone at CD Projekt Red pushed the button too early? But this was confirmed over on X/Twitter.
"We originally planned to make this big reveal during our REDstreams tomorrow, but let's say we found something we didn't yet expect on RED Launcher. "
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is a game really close to my heart, and made me dive into the books and previous games, and I for one are so happy that the developers are still pouring time and energy into the game while we wait for The Witcher 4 to arrive.
What do you think, will you be playing the new expansion? Or are you perhaps someone who has never played the game, who may now grab it? (Side note, Witcher 3 and its expansions are on Xbox Game Pass). Let me know in the comments!
