Windows Phone Games

Xbox is hitting Windows 10 in a big way later this year.

Announced back in January, Xbox will receive a dedicated app for Windows 10, providing Game DVR for all PC games, access to your Xbox One social features and game streaming across devices in your home network. In addition to this, independent developers will be able to include Xbox APIs into their games that appear in the Windows app store via the ID@Xbox program, currently available only on Xbox One.

I caught up with ID@Xbox head Chris Charla to discuss how the program has been faring so far, ID@Xbox for Windows 10 (phones too!), and more!

There are countless Windows Phone games in the Store that are entertaining time wasters. These are the games that are fun and challenging to play but don't require lengthy amounts of time to conquer (or fail). Pipeman 2 falls nicely into this genre of Windows Phone games with over fifty pipe laying puzzles to solve.

The game is well suited for those times you need help passing short bits of time and is available for low-memory Windows Phones. Game mechanics are easy to pick up and the puzzle levels will make you scratch your head at times as you search for a solution. Pipeman 2 makes a nice first impression and we can see why it has made its way towards the top of the New and Rising category of Windows Phone games.

Yesterday, on Reddit, someone found a link to a new Xbox game headed to Windows Phone. The game is called 'What in the World?'. Moreover, it is published by Game Troopers, a relatively new studio focusing on Windows Phone gaming.

Those who tried to download the title were met with a pop-up telling them they did not have permission. This error is because the game is currently testing in a private beta, so there is not much to see (or report). However, from the screenshots it looks like a cross between Trivia Crack and Draw Something with a hint of Wheel of Fortune.

We spoke with Game Troopers about the title to find out a little more about the upcoming trivia game. Here is what they told us.

Update 2: The Windows Phone version is now also live in the Windows Phone Store.

Update: Halo: Spartan Strike is now out for Windows 8.1 in the Windows Store, but there's still no sign of the Windows Phone version.

Original story: After several months of waiting, Microsoft has finally released the top-down sci-fi shooter sequel Halo: Spartan Strike. The bad news is that the title, from developer Vanguard Games, is available first on iOS devices, ahead of its promised release for Windows Phone, Windows 8.1 and Steam platforms.

Hey, Sugar Crush addicts, it looks like King has another tasty update for you Candy Crush Saga fans. While previous updates added levels to the main board, today's 1.50.2 update brings even more levels to Dreamworld aka those alternative levels where Odus the owl acts like a drunkard, always falling off his perch.

According to the game's changelog, Tiffi, the creepy little girl is now a giant while the whale gets smaller. Perhaps more interesting is the addition of 15 more levels to Dreamworld to bring the total up to 620.

Checkpoint Champion is a relatively new Windows Phone game that takes a somewhat unique approach to car racing. The game puts you behind the wheel for a series of grueling 10-15 second challenges.

Available for low-memory Windows Phones and Windows 8 devices, Checkpoint Champion has simple, two-touch controls, 72 challenges to master and daily events. The car selection is rather respectable and game play is surprisingly challenging for such a short race. Add a slightly addictive pull and Checkpoint Champion is a fun title to add to your Windows Phone gaming library.

Second Chance is a Windows Phone game that is a collection of mini-games that you play in five second spurts. The games will test your reaction speed, concentration and powers of deduction. The primary goal of Second Chance is to survive for as long as possible by solving the five second puzzles. Should you fail to solve a puzzle, it will cost you one of your five gaming lives.

The Windows Phone game, available for low-memory devices, has been available in the Store for some time now. We stumbled across Second Chance over the weekend while searching for another gaming title. Second Chance looked fun and we took the free version out for a test drive to see if the game was deserving of the 4.5 Star rating it was pulling down in the Store.

You also have three dining patrons to serve as taste testers.

Dead Trigger 2 hit the Windows Phone Store earlier this month and joins the ranks of quality Windows Phone games such as Dead Earth: Trigger Man and Dead Target: Zombie. As you might guess, Dead Trigger 2 is a first person shooter where you roam the world killing the walking dead.

The graphics with Dead Trigger 2 are well drawn up and game play has its fair share of challenges. The game includes over 600 game play scenarios that are staged across 10 global regions. Along with the storyline gaming mode, Dead Trigger 2 also has global tournaments to compete in. If you are looking for a quality Windows Phone game to spend a few minutes with or for longer spurts, Dead Trigger 2 will fit either need rather nicely. Unfortunately for some, Dead Trigger 2 is not available for low-memory Windows Phones.

For those who may not be familiar, the Windows Phone Store features a series of app and game collections that groups Windows Phone titles into a wide range of categories. Microsoft does a good job of rotating these collections and one collection that we haven't notice recently popped up on our radar.

The Into the Shadows Collection is an assembly of Windows Phone games that will allow you to be immersed in a world of intricate shading and shadows. The gaming titles are described as featuring "slick graphics with a shadowy atmosphere". When combined with challenging game play, these shadowy Windows Phone games can be an entertaining way to pass the time.

We've plucked a few of the gaming titles from the Into the Shadows Collection for this week's Windows Central roundup. There are a few notable omissions ( Dark Lands and Darklings come to mind) and if you have a favorite game with a shadowy atmosphere that isn't in the Collection, sound off below in the comments.

If you are looking for a simple, somewhat amusing Windows Phone game to pass the time with consider Dictator: Revolt. You play the role of a young dictator who must make wise and timely decisions that will impact the stability of your government and most importantly the balance in your treasury.

Available for low-memory Windows Phones the game has had a fair amount of success over on the iOS and Android platforms. In playing Dictator over the past few days, I can see the appeal the game has and Dictator: Revolt should do well on Windows Phones. However, the lack of a trial version my hold this Windows Phone gaming title back

Threes! is a big name game, having first been named 2014 iPhone game of the year, launching on Android then finding its home as a snappable game on the Xbox One. Now, it looks as though we may finally, one day, see it find a home on Windows Phone as well. One Windows Central reader put the question to the developer, with an interesting response.

The Bridge is a puzzle combined with beautifully hand-drawn art in the style of a black-and-white lithograph. Before we continue, let's get one thing out of the way. It costs $5.99 at the Windows Phone Store without a free trial. We've probably turned off many people by now, but on a positive note, you can buy the game once, and download it both for Windows and Windows Phone. The Bridge has also won the Unity Game developer contest, standing out from over 600 other entries. Watch our gameplay video to see it in action.

If you are a fan, nay, an addict of Candy Crush Saga, you may notice a small update coming to the store today. Version 1.50.1.0 is now live in the store, up from 1.45.2.0, which came out in early March.

Some have noted that the changelog references 15 new levels and something about Detective Dachshund. However, our more savvy readers will remember that those features came in the March 2nd, just over a month ago.
