Windows Phone Games

Lamp Head is yet another endless runner styled Windows Phone game but the game isn't your run of the mill endless runner game. The goal is to run your gaming character as far as possible, flipping up and down to avoid deadly obstacles.

Fitted with a lamp to shed a little light on these dangers and keep the darkness at bay, Lamp Head is an entertaining Windows Phone game to pass the time with. Available for low-memory devices, Lamp Head also includes missions or goals to work towards and global leaderboards.

While we will see a few complaints here and there, for the most part the Windows Phone Store is full of quality gaming titles from independent developers and the larger software companies. One of the more popular companies is Gameloft.

Gameloft's gaming portfolio contains over forty gaming titles, most of which are rated at four stars or better. Sure, you have some flops like Captain America: TWS but for the most part Gameloft's titles are worth having in your Windows Phone gaming library.

For this week's roundup, We've plucked four of the gaming titles from Gameloft's collection that include a war game, city builder, a puzzle game and a Medieval sports game. We'll also toss out a few honorable mentions for good measure and as always, we have the comments ready and waiting for your recommendations.

Field Goal Tournament is a challenging, casual sports game that is available for Windows Phone. The premise of the Windows Phone game is, as you might guess, is to kick field goals. It may not be a full game of American Football but a fun game nonetheless.

There are two gaming modes, a variety of football stadiums to kick in and plenty of crosswinds to contend with. Available for low-memory Windows Phones, the game may not be something to sit down with for hours on end but if you are in the mood for a little pigskin action, Field Goal Tournament is a nice title to have in your Windows Phone gaming library.

Game Insight, the king of city building games, has just released two new titles for Windows 8 and RT. First up, The Tribez (which already launched on Windows Phone awhile back) is now playable on tablets and PCs. The Tribez is a city builder set in a prehistoric fantasy world.

Secondly, Flower House (which we exclusively announced in December) has just launched on Windows 8 and RT as well. While Flower House plays a bit like a city builder, the focus is actually on growing, breeding, and collecting a huge variety of flowers and other flora. Both games are free to play. Read on for our impressions!

If you hate math puzzles, do not try Freaking Sign. It is a Windows Phone game where you are challenged to solve basic math problems and determine the relationship between the two solutions.

Sounds easy but you only have three seconds to decide if the relationship between the two values are greater than, equal or less than. Don't let the minimalistic layout or simple equations fool you. As the Windows Phone Store description states, "Freaking Sign can make you freaking mad!".

Freaking Sign is available for low-memory Windows Phones.

The fantastic upcoming first-person shooter Evolve is being reimagined for mobile as a match-3 Windows game called Hunters Quest, available for free today in the Windows and Windows Phone Store. As in the original, players are hunting a big, bad alien and have to work together to make sure they don't become the prey. Rail Heads is a Windows Phone game designed to test your reflexes and ability to plan ahead. The game has you positioning railroad tracks out ahead of a locomotive you are guiding down the tracks.

Controls are simple, game play challenging (almost to the point of frustration) and there are plenty of bobble heads to unlock and choose as your gaming character. Available for low-memory Windows Phones, Rail Heads may not be the most picturesque of games available in the Windows Phone Store but could be a decent time waster to have in your gaming library.

Back in July of last year, Microsoft announced plans to release Zoo Tycoon Friends for Windows 8.1 and Windows Phone. In addition to being an Xbox title, the game looked to fit into the growing trend of simulation and management games for mobile. Later in October, the game finally launched after some limited testing and things were looking good for the game.

Jump ahead to early 2015, and it does not take much to find complaints in the Store about the title. Reviews are littered with the same grievances, which includes the backend servers essentially not working, rendering the game (and any purchases) useless.

Today, Microsoft is throwing in the towel. In an email sent to those who are playing the game, Microsoft Studios have announced that Zoo Tycoon Friends is shutting down on April 28, 2015. Microsoft says that the closure is part of their "ebb and flow" of portfolio management, but there is little doubt that the game's constant problems likely forced their hand.

Although Microsoft only brought one Xbox One game of its own to PAX South (the highly anticipated State of Decay), our favorite company's presence mostly focused on indie games for Windows – be it PC, phone, or tablet. They called this showcase the Texas Indie Game Lounge. Games available for play in the lounge included Shroud of the Avatar for PC, Gravity Gunners (ID@Xbox), Raising Hell, the Gordian Knot, and Greeble 2.

Developer Fractal Fox's Greeble series tasks players with rescuing tiny creatures called Greebles from the gaping maw of a giant monster. Whereas the first Greeble only appeared on iOS, the sequel will launch on Windows Phone, Windows 8 and RT, Android, and iOS. I got some hands on time with the tablet versions during the show and quite enjoying the monster-tapping game play. Read on for full impressions and an exclusive hands-on video of the upcoming Greeble 2!

EvolutionMultiplayer is a Windows Phone game that tosses you in the middle of an online sci-fi battle. There isn't much to this first person shooter beyond searching the battle arena for other players to take out. You do have some character advancement as your number of kills increase but for the most part, think of it as a virtual game of paint ball but in a sci-fi setting.

The game is from the developer who brought us Masked Shooters, which is another online multiplayer shooter but less sci-fi and more military combat in mood. We received a few tips on the game and decided to see how this installment of this gaming series shook out.

EvolutionMultiplayer isn't a terrible game but, as we saw with Masked Shooters, the graphic quality really holds this game back. There is also occasional lagginess with gaming controls. EvolutionMultiplayer has potential but does need a little polishing before it can shine.

Zombie's Got a Pogo is an odd sort of an endless runner game available in the Windows Phone Store. As you would guess with the title of this Windows Phone game, you try to keep your Zombie in one piece as you guide him over various obstacles.

Simple controls, challenging game play and quality graphics helps give Zombie's Got a Pogo a nice level of appeal. The game is available for low-memory devices and while not the most feature rich Windows Phone game that features Zombies, it is a fun title to pass the time with.
